The experiences she undergoes with the telegrams' ambiguous messages and her customers' strange actions compel her to weave an intricate drama that not only clears up the ambiguities but also allows her to play an important role. She creates a subjective reality through which she can embark on an exciting, dangerous adventure. This reality, however, is not immutable. When faced with new sets of circumstances, new flashes from the outside world, she struggles to re-work her interpretations and re-create her fiction; like Odysseus, she is forced to submit to an overwhelming external power and find a new path on which to travel.

Vulnerable populations are at an increased risk for high blood pressure (HBP) and sequelae due to a low socioeconomic status and low level of education. The purpose of this evidence-based quality improvement (QI) telehealth project was to improve hypertension self-management (HSM) at a free health clinic in south Florida. This telehealth modality employed synchronous, real-time interactions that promoted active patient involvement and provided evidence of an improvement in systolic blood pressure (SBP) through effective HSM.

Television news was remarkable for its saturation in the public, its power to calm the people in time of crisis, its conciseness, and the ambivalence with which people reacted to it.

Show moreIn the American creative nonfiction genre, the line between fact and fiction is ever-blurring. Two novels which strive for realness and are thematically related in their focus on a cause célèbre and the death penalty, Truman Capote's In cold blood and Norman Mailer's The executioner's song, offer clues that might help approach the question of what makes a specific work fall under the category of creative nonfiction. I analyze the creative techniques that the authors use in their novels, and I consider details from the texts about the activeness and reliability of the narrators in the two books, as well as consequent political implications. Additionally, I ground my examination of these novels in a discussion of the progress from the early novel's drive for realism to twentieth-century literary journalism.

Show moreTemperament and its development have been associated with the alpha band of EEG coherence in previous research that focused on adolescent and adult populations, results suggest that this measure stands as a reliable indicator of emotional states. In the current study, five data sets from previously conducted studies were analyzed to determine if resting state alpha coherence measures differ in various brain regions and are associated with variation in levels of temperament. Additionally, we aimed to determine if, as age increases, a synchronous result in coherence may be seen (specifically, from posterior to anterior), in accordance with neurophysiological development. Regression analyses suggested that the negative affectivity temperamental qualities did not significantly associate with coherence. Repeated-measures analyses yielded significant results in favor of the electrocortical development hypothesis and, through exploratory analysis, more reactive temperament scores depicting positive affectivity, emotional/self-regulation, and activity level displayed in infants who had higher coherence in posterior regions. The study was suggestive of high coherence values associating with highly reactive temperamental attributes in posterior regions in the 3- to 12-month-old participants and higher coherence values displaying in posterior regions compared to anterior regions consistently across age groups.

While much is already reported for the response of Crassostrea virginica to temperature and salinity, distinct differences exist along its distribution range warranting site specific assessments for previously unstudied populations. A modified Central Composite Inscribed response surface analysis was designed to describe the response of the local C. virginica population to a range of endemic salinity and temperature combinations. Controlled temperature and salinity studies were carried out at the Gumbo Limbo Marine Science Center in a mesocosm facility specifically designed and constructed for this project. Condition index and RNA:DNA ratio served as response measures. Minimum values for condition index were observed at combinations of high temperatures(> 25 °C) and low salinities (< 5 psu). The analysis of oyster RNA: DNA ratios showed a similar pattern of response, although, in this case, its relationship with temperature and salinity was not as strong. The final models for mean condition index and the RNA:DNA ratios explained 77.3% and 35.8% of the respective variances.

The change in frequency with temperature of all three modes is due to their interaction with the mode near 108 cm^-1. The lifetime of the libration near 306 cm^-1 depends on its rate of combination with the two translations (108 cm^-1 and 140 cm^-1) and a libration near 440 cm^-1.

Abstract/Description
In this thesis, a group-theoretical analysis of the characteristic modes of lattice vibrations for ZnWO4 single crystals is given. The assignments of the vibrational modes have been made. The temperature dependence of the Raman spectra, which is reported here for the first time, has been obtained experimentally in various polarization geometries. Anharmonic contributions and interactions between phonons are discussed.

Four hypotheses were tested to determine cultural homogeneity between the sites. Results indicated that the sites were occupied seasonally for a special purpose i.e., salt collection activities.
