Show moreIn A Wizard of Earthsea and The Farthest Shore, Ursula K. Le Guin presents the theme of selfhood, of maturity, and of identity through the character heroes of Ged and Arren. Of these two, Ged experiences the quest for selfhood on two levels: first, from boy to manhood, and then from manhood to the awareness of death. Both novels deal with the struggle to create, which is primarily a struggle with self, with one's own powers, and with the need to control these powers and their consequences. I have examined WOE through the perspective of Ged's coming of age, his initiation and apprenticeship, and his relationship with the "shadow." I have discussed the shadow as a metaphor for darkness in relation to modern man's age of despair and loss of hope. In this area I have referenced ideas by Carl G. Jung. In TFS I have explored Ged's second cycle of selfhood through his encounter with death and how this encounter is seen as an abyss providing the ultimate confrontation which can guide the spirit toward creation, regeneration, and redemption. From this perspective I have explored the abyss through some discussion by Martin Heidegger. Arren's quest for selfhood is also examined, on a secondary level, through his relationship with Ged and his destiny for kingship.

The attempt, as the sonnet moves through the volume, interrupted four times by poems of other types, is to experience what seems, like stone or path, a most syllogistic of forms, as mandala. Throughout, the relationship between sight and sound is explored, using homophones, syntax working with and against parts of speech and lineation, hearkening to words that keep as unresolved as possible the vowel sounds, as brogues do, and tonal languages.

In comparing the British protests at the London School of Economics and Essex University to those of the Free University of Berlin, the University of Nanterre and the Sorbonne in France, and Columbia University and the University of California in the United States, it becomes clear that this is simply not the case. While there were some similarities to the protests, the differences were significant enough to refute the imitative claim. Also, in many cases, Britain's students were more successful in attaining their goals than were students in other nations.

Show moreIP address autoconfiguration poses a challenge for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) because it has to be done to ensure correct routing. An IP autoconfiguration protocol that is based on quorum voting is proposed. Nodes are distributed configured when a write quorum can be collected. Making the compromise between message overhead and data consistency, quorum voting enforces data consistency by ensuring fresh read on every access so that each node is configured with a unique IP address. The protocol is scalable since the configuration information is maintained locally and no central server is involved. Extensive experiments are carried out comparing the configuration latency, message overhead and address reclamation cost between our protocol and existing stateful protocols. The simulation results show that nodes are configured in lower latency and the message overhead for maintaining the network is fairly low. Moreover, the proposed protocol greatly enhances the address availability by keeping proper redundancy.

Show moreThis thesis considers the neutrino-driven wind that arises from a proto-neutron star following a supernova explosion as a possible site for the synthesis of the heavy elements by the r-process. We first review the conditions necessary to obtain an r-process, the constraints on the r-process yields for each event, and show the neutrino-driven winds from proto-neutron stars are suitable for an r-process. We next discuss some of the modifications of the supernova code that were necessary in order to numerically simulate the neutrino-driven winds and steps necessary to initiate these conditions. Three important parameters of the wind characterizing the nucleosynthesis are the net electron fraction, the entropy per baryon, and the expansion time-scale. We derive approximate analytic expressions for the neutrino luminosities and mean energies, and the final entropy and net electron fraction of the wind, and compare those against a numerical simulation. We finally present the results of a numerical simulation of the first several seconds of the wind phase, and conclude with an assessment of whether or not an r-process will occur at this time.

Results of the present study show Negroes to fare significantly less favorably in the area of educational segregation than the other minorities under study. Furthermore, whereas the percent Negro showed a significant relationship with the level of Negro school segregation, no such relationship was found for the other minorities in this study. Controlling for regional and ethnic variations did not significantly alter these findings.

Show moreThe visualization of recent episodes regarding apparently unjustifiable deaths of minorities, caused by police and federal law enforcement agencies, has been amplified through today's social media and television networks. Such events may seem to imply that issues concerning racial inequalities in America are getting worse. However, we do not know whether such indications are factual; whether this is a recent phenomenon, whether racial inequality is escalating relative to earlier decades, or whether it is better in certain regions of the nation compared to others. We have built a semantic engine for the purpose of querying statistics on various metropolitan areas, based on a database of individual deaths. Separately, we have built a database of demographic data on poverty, income, education attainment, and crime statistics for the top 25 most populous metropolitan areas. These data will ultimately be combined with government data to evaluate this hyp othesis, and provide a tool for predictive analytics. In this thesis, we will provide preliminary results in that direction. The methodology in our research consisted of multiple steps. We initially described our requirements and drew data from numerous datasets, which contained information on the 23 highest populated Metropolitan Statistical Areas in the United States. After all of the required data was obtained we decomposed the Metropolitan Statistical Area records into domain components and created an Ontology/Taxonomy via Protege to determine an hierarchy level of nouns towards identifying significant keywords throughout the datasets to use as search queries. Next, we used a Semantic Web implementation accompanied with Python programming language, and FuXi to build and instantiate a vocabulary. The Ontology was then parsed for the entered search query and returned corresponding results providing a semantically organized a nd relevant output in RDF/XML format.

Show moreThis thesis is concerned with adapting a sequential code that calculates the Radar Cross Section (RCS) of an open-ended rectangular waveguide cavity to a massively parallel computational platform. The primary motivation for doing this is to obtain wideband data over a large range of incident angles in order to generate a two-dimensional radar cross section image. Images generated from measured and computed data will be compared to evaluate program performance. The computer used in this implementation is a MasPar MP-1 single instruction, multiple data massively parallel computer consisting of 4,096 processors arranged in a two-dimensional mesh. The algorithm uses the mode matching method of analysis to match fields over the cavity aperture to obtain an expression for the scattered far field.

The first problem refers to the elucidation of the most appropriate statistics that would describe the relevant envelope distribution of the clutter caused by the dual region of sea and land of a typical coastline environment. In the second analysis, performance of the radar in terms of false-alarm and detection probabilities is predicted. The third effort addressed provides a fractal description of the ocean surface as viewed by a satellite based radar altimeter. By characterizing the ocean bed as a fractal surface, the extent to which the sea surface data contributes errors to the mispointing/autoboresight information is ascertained.

Show moreThis research addresses a specific class of electromagnetic problems concerning the radiation and scattering of high frequency electromagnetic waves at the surfaces of composite materials. With the advent of need-based developments in electromagnetic material technology, a research niche has stemmed to analyze the interaction of electromagnetic energy with different versions of composite materials used mostly as surface materials such as in radar-stealth applications. Mixture-dielectrics, mixture magnetic materials, textured electromagnetic composites with matrix layers of lossy dielectric/magnetic materials, chiralic media, active surface materials etc. are a few emerging candidates of viable composites being considered in the state-of-the-art engineering electromagnetics. Specific to these materials, the analyses pertaining to electromagnetic radiation and scattering problems require a unique, approach vis-a-vis the heterogeneous properties of the composite material surfaces involved. Presently, the proximity of such surfaces is characterized and duly accounted for, by a mutual immittance formulation based on the Monteath's field compensation theorem. Using the relevant theoretical considerations, electromagnetic plane wave and/or focused beam radiation due to an aperture, conducting patch on flat and curved surfaces and scattering by an object coated with a composite material are elucidated. Also, an experimental method of evaluating the surface immittance is indicated. Theoretical computations are validated by comparing the results with those obtained via other methods. Some experimental results are furnished in support of the theoretical approaches presented.

Show moreHepatocellular carcinoma is currently one of the most fatal cancers in the world. The routine treatment for this type of cancer consists of surgery, chemotherapy, and finally radiation therapy. Recent advancements in technology have enabled us to deliver highly conformed dose to planning target volume. Two of these methods are Intensity modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT). The difference between these two methods is that in the SBRT high radiation dose per fraction is delivered, but smaller number of fractions which renders better tumor control probability. However, better tumor control comes at the price of complications and radiation induced liver damage. In this work, we compare the outcome of radiation with regards to the probability of radiation damage to the liver after IMRT and SBRT. For this purpose, we analyzed 10 anonymized patients’ data with liver cancer, and we made two similar treatment plans for them. The difference in two plans is dose per fraction and total dose. After optimizing the treatments and calculating the dose volume histogram, we found the effective volume of the liver being irradiated. Finally, this effective volume and the corresponding dose were used to show that SBRT has the advantage of better tumor control probability at the cost of higher probability of complications.

Show moreThroughout the 21st century, some artists, athletes, and politicians began to use their platforms to speak out against the issues of systemic racism and police brutality that continue to affect black Americans to this day. While this outpouring of support for the black community has helped move the needle in terms of equity and inclusion initiatives, critics have often labeled these figures and movements too public or loud, conflating the concepts of talking and loudness with resistance to the status quo. Yet, in an era when “silence is not an option” and “quietness is complicity,” African American authors and artists have taken a subtle and quiet approach to depicting the lives of enslaved men and women. More specifically, novels, films, and art from the past two decades portray resistance as not only a public and physical phenomenon, but a mental and ideological one. This dissertation project comes at the intersection of African American literary, religious, and historical studies to argue that quiet and internal acts, such as surrender, memory, and visions, throughout contemporary representations of slavery provide an effective form of resistance to white hegemonic authority, ideology, and values. It asks readers to look beyond the public and the loud, to think about resistance that is not merely physical, to consider the possibilities present in reticence.

These novels highlight piracy as a means of rejecting systems of power and social order. Through speculative fiction, each author finds the means to resist the hegemonic power of genre, race, empire, and knowledge that pervade each author's social and historical milieu. This work examines the historical and literary context of piracy as a metaphor for radicalism, the project of legitimization and resistance to generic categorization of both texts. Emmanuel Appadocca resists racial stereotypes, and both texts exhibit clear resistance to colonial expansion. This resistance is made possible by each author's use of the sea as the site of insurgency and challenging boundaries of knowledge. Thus both novels lend themselves to interpretation as works of postcolonial fiction.

A good agreement was found for the radius upper cut-off but the shape and the peak radius of the distribution are different from experimental observations. The most probable reasons for these differences were given. Moreover, the validity of recent theoretical bubble noise models was checked. Eventually, the main limitations of the study were pointed out and directions for future works were given.

Show moreThis research is aimed at investigating and analyzing the rain-windinduced cable vibration phenomena experienced in cables of cable-stayed bridges and also the countermeasures employed by engineers to mitigate the large-amplitude vibration problem reported by various researchers around the world. In order to investigate the problem of the water rivulet creation at the top of the cable surface, a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) analytical model was developed and analyzed. This thesis studies the aerodynamic instability of cables in cable-stayed bridges by doing literature review of a typical in-situ test, developing a single degree-of-freedom (SDOF) analytical model, and an ANSYS finite element model. Furthermore, a linear viscous damper that acts as a countermeasure to the large amplitudes of vibration is reported and analyzed. The suppression characteristics and damper effectiveness of such countermeasure are summarized.

However. at some points it is necessary to set aside the practice of brevity and lengthen the works in order go beyond restrictive bounda ries and enter a realm of continuation, control, and repetition. Many of the poems begin without beginnings and end without resolutions both allowing the reader to draw from it personal points of reference as well as conclusions. An anatomical theme can be found throughout this collection, allowing these poems to become living things while lending a sense of mysticism. Collectively, these poems try to achieve a relationship of familiarity with the reader while still having come from a personal space.

This study aims to establish an understanding of historical disparities that pervade the provision of advanced education and experiences, which consequently impact access to postsecondary education for Hispanic/Latin* students. Given the heightened likelihood of encountering such disparities within this demographic, the pursuit of college degree attainment goals may necessitate particular emphasis. Utilizing Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a foundation, the satisfaction of the three basic psychological needs—competence, autonomy, and relatedness—can be examined to elucidate how students’ intrinsic motivations are influenced by their interests and needs. As the nation grapples with equity challenges, identifying opportunities to expedite progress toward academic goals is crucial. This phenomenological study delves into the lived experiences of Hispanic/Latin* high school students who have opted for accelerated university curricula. The research investigates the impetus behind participation in dual-enrollment/early-college programs and the subsequent impact on undergraduate degree attainment. Employing an SDT framework, the motivational constructs affecting persistence are analyzed to address the question, "How does participation in a dual-enrollment/early-college curriculum influence undergraduate degree attainment?" Answering this query provides an essential foundation for educational researchers, policymakers, and school personnel to address the factors contributing to the low undergraduate degree attainment rates among Hispanic/Latin* students. A comprehensive understanding of SDT’s core tenets can reveal the significance of self-efficacy and motivation, as well as the adjustment experiences of Hispanic/Latin* high school students attending university full-time. By eliminating barriers to accelerated programs such as dual enrollment, positive implications for employment and socioeconomic equity are likely to ensue, propelling the United States toward becoming a global leader in college degree attainment.

Through their writings, both Emerson and Borges provided a voice to the voiceless by addressing the most egregious violations of human rights during their respective days: For Emerson, the most virulent social ill was slavery; for Borges, it was fascism. While Emerson and Borges differ in several ways, they are remarkably similar in their emphasis of natural laws and natural rights, notably egalitarianism and liberty, which underpin humanity and comprise an integral aspect of civilization. By counteracting the antithesis of civilization, barbarism, the works of Emerson and Borges ultimately embody the tenets that would ultimately constitute The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Thus, Emerson and Borges are indelibly linked through serving as harbingers of human rights.
