CCRCs are challenged to provide therapies that enhance ability to carry out activities of daily living for these residents. The purpose of this project is to identify effective therapies. The Stinger Action research model is being used to guide the project. Students have met with a community representative who has focused attention on falls, behavioral problems and pharmacological management of dementia and Parkinson’s disease. An exhaustive literature search has been undertaken to provide evidence. There are pharmacological approaches to manage symptoms. However, there is less evidence supporting non-pharmacological approaches addressing behavioral problems and falls. Models of CCRC care are evolving and integration of person- centered non-pharmacological, evidence-based approaches will be critical and best developed with resident input.

The dispersion patterns of the creamer were observed after being both added directly to the rotating water and when having to first traverse a layer of vegetable oil. A rotating platform supporting a beaker was controlled through a power supply. The power supply was adjusted and the dispersion patterns of the creamer were observed at 2, 4, and 6 volts. When added directly, at 2 and 6 volts, the coffee creamer displayed a pattern of swirling around the vertical axis with some dispersion radially towards the bottom of the beaker. At 4 volts bands were formed, which was likely the result of experimenter error. After the vegetable oil was added, the coffee creamer again displayed as swirls after crossing the oil but was not as distinct as when applied directly.

This computer technology is an expanding field and has a plethora of applications ranging from teaching to the design of new drugs. Molecular modeling allows studying through calculation and visualization of molecular systems varying in size from minute chemical systems to hefty biological ones. The system analyzed in this study is that of gp120, the envelope glycoprotein on HIV-1 essential for viral entry into cells. HIV-1’s invasive success can be attributed to its ability to conformationally mask itself from the immune system. It achieves this because of the highly glycosylated surface of gp120. Using HyperChem Release 7, Visual Molecular Dynamics (VMD) 1.9.1, and NAMD 2.9, the glycosylated surface of gp120 and its molecular dynamics were examined to confirm its effectiveness.

Young people are becoming “adults” much later than previous generations, and their ideas of what it means to be an adult are shifting. Some have claimed that a new period of life called “emerging adulthood” is forming, in which young people feel as if they are not yet full adults (Arnett 1997, 2000, 2004). However, while this period may exist for middle-class youth, it may not reflect the experience of working-class youth (Silva 2013). Based on my data I argue that, while middle- class young adults are more likely to experience a period of emerging adulthood and pursue a fulfilling adult life, working-class youth are more focused on financial stability and are not as likely to experience a period of “emerging adulthood.”

Show moreIn the world of business, advertising is essential to success. With all of the technological clutter that consumers face every day, creating impact can only be achieved through deep understanding of what the target audience’s motivation for purchasing is. Our research team has been watching a monumental rise in demand for craft beer, and to reach that market successfully, we have set out to find what the emotional motivation behind this surge is. We have come to the educated belief that it is driven by a generational desire for new experiences. Using a systematic research method, we set out to answer our question. We began with secondary research in the form of descriptive statistics, and using these we ran a focus group to develop qualitative research. In complying with ethical research standards, consent, privacy, and right-to-record forms were used. Lastly, results are pending for our inferential statistics questionnaire.

Show moreThe Durability of Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures in the Marine environment is causing increasingly serious concern in the structural infrastructures. RC structures, exposed to aggressive environments, are expected to last with little or no maintenance for long periods of time. However, one of the most serious environmental exposures that cause degradation is Chloride Diffusion, with tide-simulated wet and dry conditions at the air-water interface. This investigation, jointly project with Cemex (a cement mixing company), will address the change of chloride diffusion current resistivity due to macro and micro cracking, which is inevitable in all concrete structures. The correlation of Chloride Diffusivity with Electrical Current Resistivity of Sound and Cracked Concrete is studied experimentally, and the results compared with Analytically Determined values. The principal benefit of the research is the formulation of models to predict time-dependent Chloride Penetration into Sound and Cracked Concrete in the Marine environment.

Johnson & Johnson settled to pay this amount to resolve the civil and criminal allegations of promotions not approved as safe and effective, kickbacks to physicians, and violations based on the False claim act. This type of offense has been common with pharmaceutical companies for the past ten years, but the federal government still gives pharmaceutical companies tax breaks which represent billions of dollars in lost revenue for the federal government. With this type of exemption, pharmaceutical companies are given an incentive to commit fraud for corporate greed while neglecting to put funds towards research and development.

The danger of these vehicles lies in the fact that they aren’t mandated to have safety features outside of seatbelts. A test rig that sufficiently tested how these vehicles react under extreme conditions as well as the risk to the occupants was designed and operated through several iterations. The main components of the rig was be a motorized variable speed pulley system, concrete barrier, and a simple quick release mechanism to detach the cart, and crash dummies with sensors to record the experienced acceleration/ deceleration and gyration. The main parameters that were studied in relation to crashworthiness are structural performance, injury measures and dummy movement. It was the goal of the experimenters to show just how important it is to design LSVs with higher safety standards.

Show moreEbola Viral Disease (EVD) is a devastating illness with high infectivity and mortality rates. The 2014 West African EVD outbreak was unprecedented in case numbers and fatalities, and has highlighted the need to develop rapid Point of Care detection devices. Progress in the diagnosis and treatment of highly virulent pathogens like the Ebola virus is often limited by the small number of labs adequately equipped to handle them. This study is one of the first to aim at developing a non-pathogenic bacterium surrogate, containing a stable EBV gene for subsequent detection studies. Our approach entailed the use of synthetic biology, to design a recombinant vector containing the Ebola virus glycoprotein (GP) gene. The synthetic gene was spliced into a E.coli pUC19 plasmid vector by ligation and subsequently transformed into competent E. coli by cloning techniques. This Ebola virus surrogate will assist in further Ebola diagnostic platform design and testing.

Show moreVisible spectrometers record the absorption of electromagnetic radiation as a function of wavelength, and the spectral data contains both qualitative and quantitative information. While these instruments are an essential tool for chemists, students often have limited access to quality instruments due to their high cost. The components used to construct visible spectrometers are moderately inexpensive due to recent technological advances, yet instruments remain expensive. The long term goal of this study is to develop a visible spectrometer accessible to students using readily available and inexpensive components. To accomplish this goal, a prototype instrument was calibrated. Resolution was determined by recording data for samples that absorb visible light at specific wavelengths. To assess the utility of the spectrometer for quantitative analysis, signal intensities were obtained as a function of sample concentration.

Show moreGalectin-1 is a beta-galactoside-binding protein implicated in regulating apoptosis, cell proliferation and cell differentiation. The objective of our research was to develop and optimize an assay format for the discovery of new inhibitors of galectin-1 using AlphaScreen technology in a competitive binding configuration. Our efforts were hampered by the weak binding affinities of galectin-1 for its binding ligands (μM range). Consequently, the AlphaScreen assay could not have been developed at the level that would satisfy the guidelines from the National Chemical Genomics Center. Nevertheless, we have optimized the AlphaScreen assay for galectin-3, another member of galectin family, and screened an FDA approved oncology drug library (n = 101) from the NIH. We identified three possible inhibitors of galectin-3. These compounds showed a positive activity in dose response experiments: bleomycin (IC50 = 25.7 nM), cisplatin (IC50 = 127 nM), and mitoxantrone HCl (IC50 = 662 nM).
