These aquifers have the capacity to safely store significant amounts of CO2 and are available worldwide. As such, reaction dynamics and multiphase transport accompanying CO2 injection in deep aquifers are important to understanding CO2 sequestration processes and therefore they have been extensively studied. Despite the comprehensive findings, there are still urgent needs for understanding of interactions between injected CO2 and resident fluids since these interactions could determine the total CO2 storage rate and capacity. The objective of this study is to investigate fundamental physics of water evaporation at different salinities under the CO2-rich environment. Microfluidic techniques visualize and quantify evaporation behavior of water in real-time in a simple 1D microchannel geometry. The detailed CO2-water interactions and underlying physics will be discussed.

The results to date seem to indicate that there is some variation in GUS expression between plant lines. The mechanisms of GUS gene integration in the plant genome as well as the possible effects it can have on a plant’s genomic structure are assessed.

Show moreAn important area of research is emerging for adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders ASD with respect to the challenges they face in their social relationships. Social relationships include those that are romantic in nature such as dating, cohabitation and marriage. Researchers suggest that engaging in a healthy and happy romantic relationship has many physical and mental health benefits that contribute to improved quality of life. This study used a quasi-experimental group design to explore the effects of psychoeducation for adults with ASD. Study participants were assigned to one of two group conditions. One group received the Relationship Enhancement®RE program and the other received RE with supplements targeting specific social skills. Social skills, empathy and social support were measured pre and post intervention for participants both within and between groups.
Significant differences were found in the assessment of participants in both groups, as measured by t-tests and effect sizes in the variables of social skills t37-2.28-2.72, p.028-.029, η2.122 and empathy t37-2.31, p.027, η2.123. These differences indicate that all participants, in both groups improved in social skills and empathy from pre to post treatment. No significant differences were found among all group participants for the variable of social support. There were no significant differences between groups for the three variables measured p0.05. Overall, these results provide support for the use of RE and the targeted supplements to increase social skills and empathy among adults with ASD who are interested in engaging in romantic relationships.

The main components of the rig was be a motorized variable speed pulley system, concrete barrier, and a simple quick release mechanism to detach the cart, and crash dummies with sensors to record the experienced acceleration/ deceleration and gyration. The main parameters that were studied in relation to crashworthiness are structural performance, injury measures and dummy movement. It was the goal of the experimenters to show just how important it is to design LSVs with higher safety standards.

Research shows that stories can be used to transport readers but there is a failure to identify vignettes as a viable medium. The ability of vignettes, a brief narrative without a conclusion, to transport readers is unknown. The purpose of this study is to determine if vignettes can be used to transport readers into a narrative and also to explore the link between transportation and negative affect. Each participant was presented 11 bullying vignettes sequentially and were asked to respond to the Transportation Scale and the Negative Affect Scale. Descriptive and inferential analysis were performed. The results showed that readers were transported into the bullying vignettes and that there is a slight positive correlation between transportation and negative emotions (r=.339).

Overall, our findings showed that people believe in climate change. However, there is a statistically significant difference on the views of climate change based on people’s party affiliation. Republicans were the highest group of all the political parties surveyed to say that the government should not have a concern for climate change. This survey depicts the conventional view that Republicans hold on the issue of climate change.

The effects of living in disadvantaged circumstances increases the individual’s likelihood of experiencing persistent anxiety, which can lead to chronic health conditions. Studies have associated persistent anxiety with cardiovascular compromise as a result of decreased levels of heart rate variability (HRV). The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between anxiety and heart rate variability in parents or guardians of children in Head Start, a federally funded program for families with low-incomes. A descriptive correlational design comparing the scores on the PROMIS anxiety tool with HRV as measured by the emWave biometric instrument will be used. The sample consists of 32 participants. Data will be analyzed using bivariate correlations. Increased levels of anxiety and decreased heart rate variability are anticipated outcomes of this study. Findings will assist in identifying health risks in this vulnerable population.

A quarter century after the dissolution of the USSR and her satellite states, only eight of twenty-eight transitioning states have been able to fully democratize. Several of these anocratic states are today characterized by routine human rights violations, state repressions of civil society, and incarcerations of political opposition. There is limited cohesive research on how the Post-Communist formation of oligarchs across Eurasia and increases in democratic transitioning period have influenced democratization. In this study, I research, test, and explain the effects of Post-Communist oligarchies and the periods of democratic transitions on current levels of democratic consolidation in twenty-eight former socialist states through publicly available statistics and primary sources. I find that while oligarchical influence on democratization is limited, shorter democratic transitions produce significantly higher levels of democratic consolidation than their prolonged counterparts.

For example, if we present the subject with a male candidate who appears aggressive and confrontational, will he be viewed the same way as a female candidate with the same characteristics? Will gender stereotypes cause the female candidate to be perceived more negatively than the male? Previous research has supported the idea that gender stereotypes will effect perception of candidates based on their gender, and this study will help to see if specific stereotypes are primed for application by the subject based on emotional displays.

The nutrient and sediment loading has caused excessive vegetative growth along the Caño Martín Peña and Guachinanga Channel due to encroachment of infrastructure along the banks of the eastern portion of the river combined with increased nutrient and sediment loading from untreated sewage and stormwater runoff. This has resulted in decreased tidal exchange between San Juan Bay and San José Lagoon, and around Guachinanga Islet. The restoration plan seeks to 1) restore the habitat on Guachinanga Islet by removing a vegetated land bridge used by non-native species that access the Islet and potentially impact native populations, and 2) improve water quality by removing sediment, debris and vegetation to allow flushing in the Guachinanga Channel, around the Islet and adjacent Caño Martín Peña 3) dispose of the comprised dredged resources in a beneficial use manner. An innovative dredge process seeks to address the logistical challenges of the project area. The resulting beneficial use skate and recreational park seeks partnering opportunities of the various social, ecological and health initiatives of the adjacent Caño Martín Peña restoration plan.

Show moreThe gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) is a threatened keystone species of the Southeastern United States. Increasing urban encroachment and tortoise translocation increases the risk of disease transmission. Prior work at Florida Atlantic University suggested resident gopher tortoises had high tick burdens. To investigate ticks as potential disease vectors, two sites were examined. The Florida Atlantic University Preserve (FAUP); managed by mowing and herbicides and Jonathan Dickinson State Park (JDSP); managed by fire. We hypothesized that gopher tortoises in the FAUP will be infected by heavier hemoparasite loads, potentially causing anemia, when compared to JDSP. To detect hemoparasites, blood was collected from tortoises at FAUP and JDSP. Blood smears revealed intracellular parasites and inclusions at both sites. Packed cell volumes were done to assess whether tortoises were anemic; results found tortoises were not anemic during that sampling period. This study will provide baseline data for blood-borne infections in two south Florida gopher tortoise populations.
