- Abstract/Description

In this thesis, I assess the debate over whether inmates should have privileges as a means of rehabilitation within United States prison populations. I focus on the example of Carl Bowles, a convicted murderer residing in Leavenworth Prison, who was given a garden to tend, only to have it taken away by a new regime. My argument is twofold: I will first discuss the normative question of whether an inmate like Carl Bowles ought to be given his garden in the first place. I will then address the...

I will then address the empirical question of whether giving him the garden is beneficial to him and society. I unfold my argument by first discussing some central theories of punishment and then applying these theories to the distinct questions concerning treatment of inmates.

I found antlions fed S. invicta had significantly lower growth and survival than antlions fed D. bureni. Thus, S. invicta does not appear to be suitable prey for M. crudelis, and may have a negative impact on M. crudelis in areas where it invades.

These behaviors are influenced by multiple systems- visual landmarks, olfaction, and magnetic sense of direction but the extent of the influence has never been established. This experiment was an attempt to gauge the extent that each had in influencing the homing ability of the tortoises by temporarily blocking these senses before moving the tortoise approximately 46 m away from the burrow it was found in or closest to and timing how long it took for the tortoise to locate a burrow. The results of the experiment support the idea that visual landmarks have the greatest influence closely followed by olfaction since the vision deprivation trials were the longest, irritated the tortoises most, and the tortoises starting blatantly using olfaction to get their bearings.

Formal schooling has not met the needs of many Liberian former child soldiers, and consequently alternative education programs and strategies are an essential approach towards reintegration. I analyze educational theory, policy, and case studies in post-conflict countries to recommend the most effective alternative education strategies for reintegrating Liberian former child soldiers and ensuring their further intellectual, social, and economic development. I argue that programs combining community and peer support with professional guidance and apprenticeships have been the most effective in reaching this population. This research will serve as a basis for implementing adult education programs at The Pa’s Hat Academy, a school intended to serve former child soldiers and subsequent generations of males in the West Point area in Monrovia, Liberia.

Thus, IP6K1 is a novel target in obesity/T2D. However, how IP6K1 expression, stability, and activity are modulated in vivo remains unknown. Recent experiments establish that IP6K1 interacts with a novel ubiquitin ligase, Ube4A. Studies are ongoing to determine the cellular role of Ube4A as well as the physiological consequences of IP6K1-Ube4A interaction.

Although some iconic characters such as Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire, and Janie in Their Eyes Were Watching God, challenge the traditional understanding of what it means to be a Southern belle, they serve the same purpose in each respective novel as the more classic Southern belles that I examine such as Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind, and Skeeter Phelan in The Help. This thesis will explore how the presence of the Southern belle within a novel acts as a thoroughfare by which an author can explore the topics of equality, racism, naturalism, exploitation of women, and the impossibility of social growth.

Gopherus polyphemus relies on thermoregulatory behavior to reach an optimum threshold for active behavior outside of their burrows. This study used internal and external temperature readings of tortoises found in the Abacoa Jupiter Greenway range VIA and compares them to behavior exhibited by the tortoise and environmental temperatures recorded. The results were compared to previous research conducted on gopher tortoises on sites of similar latitude and the results remained relatively consistent between study populations. A mean external carapace temperature of 31.8° C was determined for active behavior as well as a mean internal (cloacal) temperature of 32.3° C for active behavior. This internal temperature is slightly below previously recorded research, which states that active gopher tortoises have internal body temperatures ranging from 34-35° C.

These two novels feature female detective protagonists pursuing elusive secrets and conspiracies while struggling with technological advancement that is altering the world they think they know. These detectives are Oedipa Maas in The Crying ofLot49 (1966) and Maxine Tarnow in Bleeding Edge (201 3). The Crying of Lot 49 is set in the Cold War mid-1960's, while Bleeding Edge begins in April of2001, and ventures through the events of September 11th, 2001. Pynchon places his detectives in these volatile eras so that they might serve to immerse the reader, enabling her then to understand the techno-social developments of the present. As the characters assimilate their new experiences into an intelligible design, so too does the reader need to augment his epistemological framework.

The dominant religious culture of both the Paleolithic and Neolithic eras was emphatically matriarchal and contemporaneous societies mirrored this religious attitude with matrilineal customs. Over the course of many millennia, the goddess' identity and roles developed in different ways across the Mediterranean region. When Augustus came to power in Rome in the first century B.C.E., he adopted the tradition of his family and professed descent from Venus to lend divine credence to his claim to power. With the help of the poet Vergil, Augustus manipulated the character of Venus to embody and reinforce female roles desired in his burgeoning empire.

An archive of thirty sermons from one United Pentecostal Church congregation is the primary data source for this analysis. Two groups of sermons from different time periods (1976-86, 2000-10) were compared to examine how one minister’s approach to social issues changed over time. The minister’s discourse about education, marriage and divorce, and homosexuality held to a Pentecostal worldview of “good” and “evil” across time periods. However, key shifts in the Pastor’s dualistic discourse suggest how Pentecostals can adapt to societal change over time. This study suggests that Pentecostalism may be significantly more adaptable to external changes than some analysts had predicted, and that longitudinal discourse analyses provides a window into how the Pentecostal dualistic worldview adapts to such changes.

Show moreI argue that when an individual enters into a relationship, they should be able to share private or embarrassing facts with their partner without fear of waiving their right to privacy: members of an intimate relationship have a moral obligation not to publish, whether orally or in writing, intimate information about one another to third parties. This moral obligation further extends to photographs or videos, and I focus on the case of revenge porn. I also argue that a legal obligation is necessary to protect an individual’s privacy interests. Currently, an individual’s privacy rights are protected by four privacy torts, including the publication of private facts tort. However, in many cases one’s First Amendment right to free speech outweighs one’s right to privacy and so I propose that individuals who enter into an intimate relationship should have an additional legal form of protection.

With this history in mind, I will determine whether or not the goals of desegregation expressed by the court and these academic scholars have been met at Eastside. I will conclude that while the goal of desegregation (simply the removal codified segregation) has been met, the goal of integration (an active state intervention to remedy the effects of segregation) has not.

Past research on the use of fluorous solvents in Diels-Alder reactions suggest that the characteristics of fluorous solvents (including their tendency to be both liphophobic and hydrophobic) may provide optimal conditions for Diels-Alder reactions. This study investigates these characteristics by comparing the effects of these solvents and other solvents (or the lack thereof) on the Diels-Alder reaction. The use of the fluorous solvent FC-70 was also studied for the purpose of cracking dicyclopentadiene. Literature on molecular interactions and on Diels Alder reactions is utilized to explain how the structural and chemical features of fluorous solvents influence reaction efficiency and selectivity, and how reaction conditions (heat and duration of reaction) alter the efficiency and selectivity. We use structural and thermodynamic arguments to explain these alterations. By better understanding how fluorous solvents function in Diels-Alder reactions, reaction conditions may be improved and their use expanded.

The objective of this study is to test for the presence of the IFD in groups of antlion (Myrmeleon sp.) larvae and examine the reaction of antlions to pit destruction with the hopes of analyzing the incentives associated with pit relocation. It was found that although antlions possessed characteristics that showed they were cognizant of their incentive structures (such as moving pits in response to pit destruction), they did not appear to employ the IFD under the constraints chosen.

In this thesis, I argue that Bronte uses the fluidity of class to dismantle the layers of patriarchy within the novel and larger social structures. Nelly Dean is both the narrator and a lowly housemaid within Wuthering Heights, however despite her status, she is given many privileges within the house and has a distinct sense of agency. This is a subtle queering of class structures, however Heathcliff is able to gain a massive quantity of wealth and move from a lowly stable boy to a stately land owner; this is also despite the racial stigma of Heathcliff being introduced as an orphaned gypsy. Many characters move both up and down within class structures through gaining and losing capital; both social and monetary. Despite this attempt by Bronte however, while she is successful in disrupting the patriarchy, she is ultimately unsuccessful in dismantling it because it is primarily the male characters who are able to move up within the social scale.
