As we all know, web server logs contain potentially useful empirical data to improve web server performance. In this thesis, we discuss some topics related to the analysis of a website's server logs for enhancing server performance, which will benefit some applications in business. Markov chain models are used and allow us to dynamically model page sequences extracted from server logs. My experimental studies contain three major parts. First, I present a workload characterization study of the website used for my research. Second, Markov chain models are constructed for both page request and page-visiting sequence prediction. Finally, I carefully evaluate the constructed models using an independent test data set, which is from server logs on a different day. The research results demonstrate the effectiveness of Markov chain models for characterizing page-visiting sequences.

Show morePole-mounted street lighting on coastal roadways is often visible in adjacent areas. At roadways near sea turtle nesting beaches, these lights can disrupt the nocturnal orientation of hatchlings as they crawl from the nest to the sea. Our objective was to determine if an alternative lighting system (light-emitting diodes, embedded in the roadway pavement) prevented orientation disruption of loggerhead hatchlings. Hatchlings at the beach oriented normally when the embedded lights were on, or when all lighting was switched off. However, turtles showed poor orientation when exposed to pole-mounted street lighting. Light measurements revealed that street lighting was present at the beach, whereas embedded lighting was absent. I conclude that embedded lighting systems restrict light scatter, leaving adjacent habitats dark, and therefore protect the turtles from artificial lighting allowing for normal seafinding.

This study looks how aging of the scrub has affected scrub-jays at the Savannas Preserve State Park in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The population of scrub-jays at Savannas has been in decline over the past eight years. This study revealed that they are occupying territories that are much smaller than the normal optimal size and are having minimal reproductive success. In addition, the birds are subjected to predation pressures from natural predators present at higher than normal densities and by other predators brought into their habitat by encroaching urban development. The implementation of an aggressive prescribed fire program to restore their habitat is crucial to the long-term survival of this population of Florida Scrub-jays.

The metaphorical comparisons are interlaced within the colonial usurpation which fuels the novel into becoming an ecocritical statement, because without the health of the environment, both human and non-human species alike decay and die because of colonial encroachment. Shani Mootoo illustrates the ecological clash between the wetlands and the tropics through an intricate narrative involving people who are dominated by their environments and cultures, or lack thereof, which create great chasms to overcome. Through critical nature symbols such as the town of Paradise versus the wetlands, the cereus plant, the bugs, the birds, and the cat, important ecocritical connections can be made as to the survival of the characters and the island.

These are created in such a fashion that certain sets of shares when superimposed, will reveal the image; while other subsets yield no information. A standard model is the (k, n) scheme, where any k shares will reveal the image, but any k - 1 or fewer shares reveal no information. In this thesis, we explain the basic mechanism for creating shares. We survey the literature and show how to create (k, k) schemes which exist for all k > 2. Then we introduce perfect hash functions, which can be used to construct (k, n) schemes from (k, k) schemes for all 2 < k < n. We introduce generalizations of (k, n) schemes that we call covert cryptographic schemes, and extend this notion to multilevel visual cryptographic schemes. We give conditions for the existence of such schemes, and we conclude with a survey of generalizations.

In the choice condition, they produced the answer and gave a self report of how they solved it. In the no-choice condition, they were asked to use only retrieval. Naming latencies of numerals in both formats were assessed. Verbal problems were solved more slowly than digit problems in all conditions but format did not interact with problem size effect for reaction times. This latter result does not support an effect of presentation format on calculation processes. Participants also named faster digits than verbal numerals. Smaller reaction times and three times as many errors were associated with the no-choice compared to the choice condition. Mathematical aptitude also had an effect. High arithmetic skill was related to smaller reaction times, more retrieval use and fewer errors.

Taxa were selected to check for compatibility of results between different fossil genera from the same environment. Comparison between isotopic signatures in recent and fossil congeneric species allowed substantial insight into growth rates. Recent specimens were collected from the Gulf of Aniva, Gulf of California, Bahamas, Florida Keys, and Gulf of Mexico. Fossil specimens were collected from the Middle Miocene of Kamchatka and the Pleistocene of Florida. Oxygen isotope ratios were also used to infer ambient seawater temperatures during the deposition of each shell. The calculated temperatures offer significant insight into the Pleistocene southern Florida embayment and Middle Miocene climatic optimum in the North Pacific.

Experiment 1 replicated previous results obtained using 2-flash stimuli; motion was optimal for a non-zero inter-frame interval (Kolers, 1972; Wertheimer, 1912). In Experiment 2, stimuli were pared down to a single luminance change toward the background at one location, and a single luminance change away from the background at one location at another. Results were consistent with apparent motion being specified by the counter-changing luminance; motion was optimal for a non-zero inter-frame interval. A subtractive model based on counter-change stimulating opposing motion directions did not account for the results of the 2-flash experiment. An alternative model based on the combined transient responses of biphasic detectors is discussed.

It was hypothesized that males will be more distressed by sexual infidelity and females will be more distressed by emotional infidelity and that relationship experience will trigger males and females to respond in predictable ways. This study replicated Buss et al. (1992/1999) original findings, found no support for the double shot hypothesis, and found that relationship experience plays a partial role in the impact it has on predicting upset over infidelity, with males reliably becoming more distressed over sexual infidelity and females being more variable in there responses to jealousy.

Show moreIn shallow water or fluid half-space, the acoustic scattering from a target is significantly different from that of an unbounded medium, due to the multiple reflections occurring between the target and the boundaries. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the influence of the boundaries on the acoustic scattering of a rigid sphere by means of a superposition method. A minimum number of point sources necessary to accurately model the scattered field is determined in the case of a free medium, a fluid half-space and a waveguide. The free field symmetry vanishes due to the presence of boundaries and, at particular frequencies or scatterer depths, a significant change in the magnitude and spatial distribution of the scattered field occur. In an unbounded medium or fluid half space, the superposition method is shown to give similar results to analytical formulations found in the literature, provided enough point sources are used.

Show moreThis research investigates the validity of an acoustic propagation model by comparing theoretical reflection coefficients, function of frequency, to FAU chirp sonar measurements (chirp sub-bottom profiler). An acoustic model has been implemented to estimate the spectrum of energy reflected from sandy sediments in the presence of surface scattering. The surface roughness being the dominant reverberation part, the volume scattering has been neglected in this model. A laser scanning system involving an image-processing algorithm has been designed to measure the seafloor bottom roughness using 1D Fourier transforms. In the case of anisotropic roughness, an estimation of the sand ripples dominant direction is provided involving 2D Fourier transforms. Measurements of acoustic data using a chirp sonar and estimation of bottom roughness from video data of the scanner over an artificial bottom are provided to compare the reflection coefficients obtained from the data actually measured with those from the acoustical model.

While the Indian National Congress and the Irish Parliamentary Party pursued constitutional means to achieve Home Rule, their elitist composition ensured that neither enjoyed broad appeal. Thus, the emergence of a viable native press played a critical role in the forging of a national identity. In the vanguard of the movement were editors Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Arthur Griffith, whose newspapers provided a valuable forum for the masses, framing the national debate with urgency and lucidity. Individually, these journalists and statesmen articulated, in print and in public, the essential tenets of Irish and Indian nationalist policy. Together, their combined assault on their English rulers may have hastened the decline of the British Empire.

They have different biogeographical distribution: C. dalli is restricted to the Panamic area; whereas C. textile is a widespread species found from the Red Sea to Hawaii. The venom of C. textile is an extremely complex mixture of conopeptides characterized for their very high content of modified amino acids; particularly, for their high content of gamma-carboxy glutamate (Gla). Therefore, it is expected that the venom of C. dalli is equally complex and it might provide us with a library of novel conopeptides. We have collected 6 specimens of C. dalli from the Pacific coast of Panama. Their venom ducts were dissected and 40 mg of crude venom were extracted. Venom was separated using SE-HPLC and RP-HPLC and several single-component fractions with unique molecular weights have been found. 1D and 2D NMR methods in conjunction with mass spectrometry techniques have been applied to the main components of the venom. Three novel conopeptides have been isolated and characterized; dal_C1011h, dal_C0910, and dal_C0805g. dal_C1011h is a 27-residue hydrophobic conotoxin that belongs to O-superfamily, dal_C0910 is a 16-residue conotoxin that belongs to M-superfamily, and dal_C0805g is a 12-residue linear conopeptide the belong to the Conorfamide family. The details on the characterization of these conopeptides along with a comparison with previous data obtained from C. textile are presented.

This research determined the distribution of multiple species of bacteria on 16 different surfaces in two hospitals over a period of time to identify potential reservoirs of infection. The relative efficacy of current hospital disinfectants on endospores were also evaluated to inform policy. Using simulations of endospore-laden surfaces under laboratory conditions, the effects of exposure time, disinfectant concentration and possible synergies with endospore germination stimulant were evaluated. Keyboards, phones, door handles and bed rails were identified as risky hospital surfaces. The location and use of the surfaces were significant determinants of bacterial load. None of the disinfectants tested was sporicidal (<50% reduction). The results of this unique study provide healthcare personnel with a practical guide to control the spread of infection during peace and bio-warfare times.

The participants included 8 mothers and 1 father and their children (4 males, 5 females) between the ages of 28 and 32 months who were videotaped as they worked with puzzles in a laboratory playroom. Child temperament was assessed using the Toddler Behavioral Assessment Questionnaire (TBAQ), a parental report instrument. The parent behaviors measured were the use of directives, praise and encouragement, and negative corrections. The child behavior measured was compliance to parental directives. Parent and child behaviors were coded from videotapes of observational sessions. Children's scores on two dimensions of the TBAQ were associated with parenting behavior: Children's scores on the pleasure dimension of temperament were positively associated with parental use of directives, and children's scores on the interest dimension of temperament were negatively associated with parental use of negative corrections. These findings suggest that parents' perceptions of their children's temperaments are associated with their parenting behavior toward their children.

Julie Rivkin and Joyce Carol Oates are critics I cite as valuable support to my interpretation of "The Middle Years," a short story that gives us insight into Henry James's critical theory. The story deals with the final days of the author---Dencombe and his creation of a work of art also entitled "The Middle Years." This doubling of the title causes authority over the story to become diffused: the real author writes the actual story, while the fictional author owns both the fictional and actual story. Authority is further complicated by the processes of reading and revision. Through these processes, the author and the reader become both creators and spectators. This duality in combination with Dencombe's identification as the ideal author and Dr. Hugh's identification as the ideal reader grants insight into James's stance on the author's role in a work of fiction.

The main sources of input to RH were from the anterior cingulate, agranular insular, orbital, and somatosensory cortices; the claustrum; the reticular nucleus of the thalamus; the posterior hypothalamus; and various brainstem structures. Based on patterns of the afferent projections, the role of RH in arousal, attention, and mnemonic functions is discussed.

We report the development of a novel hetero-Diels-Alder reaction involving the use of allenyl carbonyls as heterodienes. We have described the synthesis of a variety of allenyl carbonyls via a base promoted and manganese mediated isomerization of alkynyl carbonyls for use in methodology studies. In our model studies, a variety of enamines were utilized effectively as dienophiles to form "hydrolyzed" Diels-Alder adducts while investigating optimal reaction conditions. Show moreWe report the development of a novel hetero-Diels-Alder reaction involving the use of allenyl carbonyls as heterodienes. Initial studies towards the synthesis of an allenyl ester tethered to an aldehyde for an eventual application in an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction were performed. Possible mechanisms were proposed while computational studies were performed in attempt to rationalize product selectivity.

This thesis expands upon an existing noise cleansing technique, polishing, enabling it to be used in the Software Quality Prediction domain, as well as any other domain where the data contains continuous values, as opposed to categorical data for which the technique was originally designed. The procedure is applied to a real world dataset with real (as opposed to injected) noise as determined by an expert in the domain. This, in combination with expert assessment of the changes made to the...
Show moreThis thesis expands upon an existing noise cleansing technique, polishing, enabling it to be used in the Software Quality Prediction domain, as well as any other domain where the data contains continuous values, as opposed to categorical data for which the technique was originally designed. The procedure is applied to a real world dataset with real (as opposed to injected) noise as determined by an expert in the domain. This, in combination with expert assessment of the changes made to the data, provides not only a more realistic dataset than one in which the noise (or even the entire dataset) is artificial, but also a better understanding of whether the procedure is successful in cleansing the data. Lastly, this thesis provides a more in-depth view of the process than previously available, in that it gives results for different parameters and classifier building techniques. This allows the reader to gain a better understanding of the significance of both model generation and parameter selection.
