Analysis through histochemical staining and genetic assays rendered putative transgenic lines that were cultivated for further assessment of progeny. First generation histochemical analysis of 14-day tissue formation resulted in no levels of expression for the GUS gene, which demonstrated that the flower-specific PUN promoter was not active in the leaf tissue. Further testing of gene activity throughout all stages of tissue formation for the first generation lines is required in order to assess regulatory pattern of the PUN promoter.

Show moreThe purpose of this research project is to investigate the impact adult day care centers have on cognitively impaired older adults and their caregivers. I extracted data from records of the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center participants who have given consent and attended the center for a minimum of six months. I have discovered that participants benefit from this day center because they experience an improved quality of life, maintain a higher level of functioning, have more opportunities for socialization, and establish friendships and connections. Caregivers of participants enrolled in the day center also benefit because they receive access to caregiver support groups, are temporarily freed from the responsibility to care, and are pleased that participants attend the center and enjoy attending the center. These findings contribute to the current body of research literature that supports the contributions of adult day care centers.

To this end, a reservoir supplying constant head and near-hydrostatic conditions was equipped with an exit fitting in its lower section. A section of PVC tubing extended vertically downward from this exit point and was straddled by a pair of dynamic loudspeakers placed opposite each other and connected to a receiver's inputs so as to play a signal of specified frequency. The resulting turbulent jet flow was then allowed to drop to a horizontal plate of circular shape. The outer lip of the plate triggered a circular hydraulic jump whose location was found to be directly dependent on the frequency of the forces exciting the flow.

Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties represent a unique demographic and cultural milieu that composes south Florida. As part of Florida Atlantic University’s Peace, Justice and Human Rights Initiative, we are working towards creating a report card that reveals various health, social, economic and other disparities experienced by local populations. This project promotes a greater awareness centered on the issues of inequality by looking specifically at datasets that highlight demographic information within south Florida. Constructing a human rights report card requires an assiduous effort in locating and analyzing relevant and available data. Healthcare, education, crime and poverty were among the indicators for which data was collected. All data was gathered from various government agencies including the U.S. Census Bureau, Florida Department of Education, National Vital Statistics, among others. Statistics were then compared between the four counties, the state of Florida, and the United States to demonstrate south Florida’s current status as it relates to state and national levels of inequality. This report card highlights the various areas of socioeconomic disparities present between south Florida’s communities by analyzing county-level demographic data. The analysis of various health, social and economic data contributes towards a more comprehensive understanding of the adversities that local populations experience.

A scientific census in 1995 provided confirmation of this population. Endemic to West Africa, research suggests this primate has adapted to the ecology of the mangrove environment in Southeast Florida. The 1995 census showed the population consisted of two groups with a total of 36 individuals. We resurveyed the population from January-February 2014 by visiting sites where monkeys have been reported either in the media or by local residents. We found the vervets inhabit two geographically isolated areas, separated by a man-made waterway. The population is divided into three groups with a total of 18 individuals. Group A, which occupies the northern most part of the mangroves consists of 3 adult males, 1 juvenile male, 5 adult females, and 1 infant. Group B, which occupies the central part of the mangroves consists of 1 adult male, 2 adult females, 1 sub-adult female, and 2 juveniles. Group C, which occupies the southern part of the mangroves consists of 2 adult females. In the 1995 study, this southern group ranged in size from 19-23 individuals. Our results indicate the total population decreased significantly in size over the past 19 years. To confirm this population decrease, research will expand surveys into unexplored areas of the mangrove preserve to document the presence or absence of additional groups. Ongoing research will investigate day ranges, behavior, and feeding ecology of this feral primate population.

In this project, erythrolides A and B will be isolated from E. caribaeorum collected off the coast of Boca Raton, Florida. These compounds will be exposed to ultraviolet light and analyzed to identify any chemical changes. New compounds will then be subjected to biological screening for cytotoxicity against human cancer cell lines. This project will not only identify new bioactive compounds but also provide a novel route for the large-scale production of medically relevant marine natural products.

Additionally, noting from her teaching experience at various universities, the study and approach to teaching religion differed at the type of institution it was and the mission of that university. Therefore, this study aimed at discovering just how religion is taught in institutions of higher education at selected universities in the United States of America.
The rationale behind this study was twofold: first, to determine if religion is currently being taught at selected institutions of higher education in the U.S. and second, how the instruction and teaching of religion is approached within these institutions. And so, the purpose of this study was to determine if universities are still teaching religion and religious studies courses; if so, what are the structures and approaches that are used when teaching religion at both top-tiered and southeastern universities; and what are the similarities and differences between the two aforementioned types of institutions’ programs. Thus, we may infer from the data whether or not there is a future for these programs within higher education in the U.S.

Show moreAccurate predictions of population growth, including reproduction, are vital for the effective management of fisheries. However, factors effecting reproductive potential in boney fishes are not entirely understood. In several species of fish, parasite infection has been associated with decreased fecundity including fewer and smaller eggs, shortened spawning season, and decreased larval survival. We examined the effect of parasite infection and life history parameters on egg quality of 40 spawning capable female common snook, Centropomus undecimalis, collected from 3 inlets on the Atlantic coast of Florida in the summer of 2013. Egg quality was measured as fatty acid DHA, PI, and EPA composition of eggs. Six major taxons of parasites were identified: Cestoda 1 adult, 68 trypanorhyncha larvae, Copepoda 1 Lernae sp., 62 Lernanthropus sp., Digenea 1 adult, Monogenea 1 adult, Nematoda 861 Contracecum sp., and Pentastomida 36 Sebekia sp.. In addition, dead parasites of unknown taxa 262 total were counted. Parasite infracommunities were described as total number of live parasites per individual, total number of dead parasites per individual, the Shannon Wiener Index H as a measure of diversity, and the Berger-Parker Index BPI as a measure of numerical dominance. Total number of dead parasites and BPI had a significant, negative effect on percent composition of DHA of eggs. Individuals with higher amounts of dead parasites 20 were predicted to drop below a 13 DHA composition threshold needed for hatching and larval success.

The dysregulation in mature GC circuitry in seizure dormant period in TgBDNF mice indicates early seizure susceptibility. Both mature GCs and immature GCs will show structural alterations in their input and/or output regions in TgBDNF mice long before full motor seizures are detectable pinpointing early dysregulations in the gating properties of these input neurons to hippocampus, favoring enhanced information processing and propagation. These collective results will help pinpoint intervention targets for seizure prevention.

Food is now evolving, preferences are varying from natural tastes to unnatural alterations due to chemical additives. We felt more research is needed to understand what motivates consumers to purchase varying types of foods. To understand consumers’ views on food preferences, we developed an online survey with fifteen questions and collected responses from 498 people. Our findings show a statistically significant difference between people of different gender, age, and regions regarding motivations to purchase food and food labeling. With this knowledge, we may better understand what people of different demographics feel regarding the current state of food wellness, and why they might prefer certain actions over others due to their diverse backgrounds.
