Show moreProfessional service entrepreneurs (PSEs) paradoxically practice their profession in highly institutionalized contexts which require significant socialization, while at the same time enacting their role as an entrepreneur. Some activities consistent with entrepreneurship may be unnecessary for—and possibly even contradictory with— activities consistent with professional roles. In this dissertation, I addressed the questions of how two highly central role identities (professional and entrepreneurial) related to entrepreneurial orientation (EO) in professional service practices, and how EO influences performance in the context of professional practices. Using a sample of 139 physicians, I examined the relationships between the role identity centrality of two primary roles (professional and entrepreneurial) that PSEs occupy, the EO of their firms, and firm performance. This study utilized a mixed methods design, consisting of both a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews administered to a sample of professionals who own professional practice firms in the southeastern region of Florida. Findings suggest a significant and positive relationship between entrepreneurial role identity centrality and entrepreneurial orientation and a marginally significant and negative moderation of entrepreneurial role identity centrality upon the relationship between professional role identity centrality and EO. A qualitative study served to elaborate on the findings of the quantitative study, and revealed the potential of very unique understandings of the intersection of entrepreneurship and professional practice across a selection of physicians.

The music Americans heard and enjoyed over the airways was limited, however, by payola. Program directors adhered to criteria that supported the corporate fiscal model of their radio stations. Songs needed to attract listeners and major advertisers. Payola typically involved direct payments from major record labels to disc jockeys and the rewards were lucrative. Record labels fed them songs to play and disc jockeys became loyal to the payments. Thus, payola became a bottleneck to broader distribution of other artists, which hurt musicians, small record labels, and the public, and increased the price of music. Entertainment managers were ambitious band managers who took on additional roles due to the high costs of producing and promoting songs. The case of Robby and the Troubadours is shared through a historical simulated marketing plan.

Show moreMergers and acquisitions (M&As) of private target firms is a common phenomenon and being acquired is the desired outcome for some private firms, as it is the path to wealth creation for these firm’s owners and investors. However, this M&A type has received limited attention in the literature, especially from the perspective of the target firm. Furthermore, neither a theoretical model to explain the phenomenon where the goal of the target firm is to be acquired in M&A, nor an indicator to gauge wealth creation for such firms were identified in the review of the literature. This paper established that, because being acquired in a M&A may be the goal, the wealth generated from the M&A is the outcome or performance indicator for such firms. The outcomes of M&As depend, among other factors, on the acquiring firm’s perception of the target firm’s value. Thus, this paper coined the term ‘private firm’s attractiveness as an acquisition target’, and built on the resource based view of the firm and signaling theory to identify factors that influence a private firm’s attractiveness to acquirers. Furthermore, private firm’s attractiveness as an acquisition target was used as the bridge between the acquiring firm perspective and target firm perspective in a M&A. The resource-based view of the firm and the signaling theory were used jointly in building the theoretical framework for hypotheses development. Hypotheses were tested using a sample of 222 acquisitions of US private target firms by US public acquiring firms. Hierarchical regression with inverse mills ratio, as well as two-step Heckman model were used to address the potential selection hazard. Results provided strong support for most hypotheses, and showed that investor involvement, target firm’s industry innovativeness, and target firm’s emphasis on growth in human capital were positively related to the private firm’s attractiveness as an acquisition target. Furthermore, the effects of emphasis on growth in human capital were stronger when the target firm’s growth in revenue was lower and when the target firm operated in a more innovative industry. The effects of emphasis on growth in revenue were stronger when the target firm operated in a less innovative industry.

Show moreI investigate if all-equity firms are a heterogeneous group as it relates to agency costs and accounting quality. All-equity firms are a unique group of firms that choose a “corner solution” as their capital structure. Extant research, supported by well-established theories such as trade-off theory, free cash flow theory, and Jensen’s (1986) control hypothesis, generally conclude that agency conflicts motivate such structure. Research also supports the alternative argument that poor accounting quality makes debt so prohibitive that such firms are driven to this capital structure. I propose that an all-equity structure is not necessarily symptomatic of agency conflicts and poor accounting quality overall. I investigate if different motivations, within an all-equity setting, reflected by free cash flows and growth opportunities, result in different levels of agency cost and accounting quality. By anchoring on theories that link implicit costs of debt to free cash flow levels and growth opportunities, I hypothesize that free cash flows and growth opportunities are strongly linked to the justification or lack thereof for the pursuit of such strategy. I hypothesize and show that firms in the extremes of the free cash flow to growth rate spectrum exhibit significantly different levels of agency cost and accounting quality within the all-equity setting. These results support my main prediction that there exists agency costs and accounting quality differences within the all-equity setting which are associated with free cash flow levels and growth opportunities and that the pessimistic conclusions for pursuing an all-equity strategy reached by prior research should not be generalized to all such firms.

Multiple least squares regression is employed to estimate the stochastic equations; and a dynamic multiplier simulation program evaluates the stability and calculates the impact and interim dynamic multipliers of each resultant model. The results point to an absolute income specification with the quickest response to fiscal and monetary policy. In addition, there are inherent specification problems as enlightened by review of the size of the total impact multipliers.

Show moreThis empirical study examines the impact of a homeowners association (HOA) mandatory membership fee on residential real estate prices, a topic that has not been empirically addressed in the real estate literature. A mandatory membership fee is defined as an initiation fee charged by HOAs that grants homeowners country club access. Many studies have examined the impact of the presence of homeowners associations on price but only a few studies have examined the impact of homeowners associations on price by estimating the impact of homeowners association fees. This research expands the HOA literature by examining the specific HOA fee characteristics of a mandatory membership fee. In this analysis, hedonic price models (HPM) are used to estimate the impact of mandatory membership fee on price by analyzing 31,704 observations of single family home sales between 2018 and 2019 in Palm Beach County, Florida using data from a local multiple listing service. Specifically, Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) models using two dependent variables, sold price and natural log of sold price, with mandatory membership fee as the independent variable of interest are used to estimate the relationship between mandatory membership fee and sales price. By controlling for property, neighborhood, and market characteristics, the hypothesis I investigate states that the impact of the presence of a mandatory membership fee on sales price is negative.

Show moreThe purpose of this research is to better understand how marketers and consumers solve problems. This research first reviews the problem-solving literature, discusses several areas of confusion related to problem-solving, and offers solutions. After resolving the confusion, this research then develops a theoretical model of problemsolving. Four hypotheses are derived from the model, and then empirically tested. The model states that the distinct cognitive domain of problem-solving begins with problem recognition. Given a problem, associative memory and associative activation provide a solution (H #1). This solution is either satisfactory or unsatisfactory. If satisfactory, the individual engages in the satisficing process and accepts the solution (H#2). If unsatisfactory, the individual engages in the decision-making process and searches for information related to an alternative solution (H #3). Thus, the difference between satisficing and decision-making is the search for information (H #4). Problemsolving ends when an intended solution is chosen. A pretest and two studies are conducted to test the four hypotheses. The Pretest demonstrated situations that elicited problem recognition. Study 1 tested hypothesis #1 and found that at least 75 percent of the time associative memory and associative activation provided a solution. Study 2 tested hypotheses #2, #3, and #4. Hypotheses #2 and #3 were tested using a two-way ANOVA, Chi-Square, and Point Biserial Correlation and hypothesis #4 was tested using an independent sample t-test and Point Biserial Correlation. Results of all empirical tests confirm each of the hypotheses, which in turn support the theoretical model.

Show moreThe purpose of this research was to construct and empirically test a theoretical model of surprise and its impact on consumer affect and behavior. First the literature on the emotion of surprise was reviewed with particular emphasis on classification and process models of surprise. A theoretical model of surprise was constructed. A new concept called motivated meaning integration (MMI) was proposed. MMI takes place in a setting that includes the interaction of the appraisal process with factors such as environmental uncertainty and consumers’ individual differences. These interactions impact outcomes such as consumer affect and buying behavior. Ten hypotheses were derived from the theoretical model and empirically tested using several pretests and two main studies. The present research designed and evaluated several surprise manipulations and MMI manipulation checks to effectively test the proposed relationships. Participants were recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk (Mturk). Although many of the hypotheses were not supported, some important ones were. The results provide some support that a consumer’s sense of personal control interacts with MMI to impact a consumer’s likelihood of choosing unknown or mystery products ( e.g. products in a known category such as beauty products but the actual products are selected by the company). Specifically, consumers who experienced a low sense of personal control (compared to a high sense personal control) were more likely to choose mystery products (vs. objectively similar known products) after they encountered surprise with mystery (vs. with known) elements. The results also provided some support that productivity orientation interacts with surprise appraisal to impact consumer affect. Particularly, consumers with high productivity orientation (vs. low) were more likely to experience higher positive affect after encountering surprise with mystery (vs. with known) elements. The primary implication for theory involves refining the conceptualization of surprise appraisal, especially fast MMI, and adopting adequate measure for testing it. The most relevant implication for marketing management is to offer products with mystery elements because consumers are more likely to choose additional mystery products. If this dissertation stimulates others to pursue research on surprise theory in marketing, my efforts to continue developing scientific theory will be worth it.

Show moreThe United States established the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to monitor and enforce compliance with environmental pollution standards through various programs and policies. One such policy, the Audit Policy, allows companies to voluntarily self-report violations to the Agency in exchange for elimination of certain penalties. Despite the policy, firms still incur large environmental penalties, thus indicating the need for better understanding of the policy. A necessary but not sufficient condition for penalty relief under the Audit Policy requires discovery of violations by an environmental audit or a compliance management system. This research explores the option of discovery by a compliance management system and examines the motivation of managers to invest in an environmental management system (EMS). The theory of reasoned action (TRA) argues that attitude and subjective norms precede intentions. I use this theory to investigate what factors cause a manager to invest in an environmental management system (EMS). Additionally, I examine whether environmental attitude, tolerance for ambiguity and willful blindness are antecedents to attitude towards an EMS. In this study, I develop and test a scale of the willful blindness construct and measure its impact on managerial decision-making. The willful blindness construct development produced a one-item measure. My results support all hypotheses except for the predicted link between tolerance for ambiguity and attitude.

Show moreThe purpose of this thesis is to present an econometric model for the region of Palm Beach County. This type of economic analysis was chosen because it captures the influence of the service and trade industries as well as the simultaneous nature of other industries which dominate the local economy. The estimation results identified the construction industry as a leading indicator of economic activity in transportation, communications, utilities, finance, insurance and real estate. This simultaneous structure of the model led to the application of various multipler analyses. It was found that local construction output affected gross regional product, local personal income and local total employment. National personal income was found to influence local trade which in turn affects levels of local output, employment and income.

Certain assumptions had to have been made in order for alien expulsion to increase domestic employment. Each of these assumptions is examined to see if it accurately depicted the conditions it described. The results of alien expulsion are then examined in light of the logic set up by this thesis.

Henderson and is developed from microeconomic concepts. A survey of the literature concerning public expenditure begins the study. This is proceeded by the derivation of the regression equations which are derived from the concept of constrained welfare maximization. Estimation of the model involves aggregation into metropolitan counties and non-metropolitan counties of Florida county data and the subsequent categorization of counties. Empirical estimation of the desired coefficient enables the exumination of the involved elasticities and the endogenous variable response to changes in the exogenous variables.

The most accurate studies contemplate both macroeconomic and microeconomic variables simultaneously. In analyzing real estate markets, both monetary policy and regional factors must be examined to obtain an accurate portrayal of both national and local trends. One regional factor that has affected all real estate markets, especially in the southern states, is local land use legislation. Due to rapid increases in population, various states have enacted growth management policies to ensure stable expansion within their regions. This study utilizes data for Broward County, Florida, to assess the impact of land use legislation on the local real estate market in comparison to macroeconomic variables. The empirical results clearly demonstrate that legislation can exert a greater influence on local housing market activity during certain periods than can macroeconomic factors such as interest rates.

Show moreOutsourcing has become a significant factor in the U.S. economy over the past two decades. Annual report disclosures made by a firm related to outsourcing are voluntary disclosures. Understanding the determinants and firm performance implications of initial outsourcing annual report disclosures is important to capital market providers, standards developers, and to the firms themselves. I identify and study firms making initial voluntary disclosures of outsourcing in their annual reports on Form 10-K between 1993 and 2003 after they make non-annual report related public disclosures. Specifically, I investigate if determinants of the initial annual report disclosure decision and subsequent performance are associated with the initial disclosure. This study contends managers disclose information related to outsourcing in their annual reports to reduce information asymmetry and to minimize agency costs. I hypothesize and develop a firm-related variable commonly used in agency theory to test this assertion. Signaling theory and voluntary disclosure theory also explain the determinants for firm voluntary outsourcing annual report disclosures. I develop several hypotheses defining determinants potentially associated with the likelihood of initial annual report outsourcing disclosure decisions, and test these determinants using a conditional logistic regression model and a matched-pair group of firms making public outsourcing disclosures but not making annual report disclosure. Using signaling theory, I also develop hypotheses testing if the initial outsourcing annual report disclosure sends a signal regarding future firm performance--specifically testing firm performance measures related to profitability and cash flow. I test these hypotheses using OLS models and the same matched-pair group of firms. I find firms with high levels of debt, high total cost ratios, and high returns on assets are more likely to make initial annual report outsourcing disclosure., I also find firms may signal improvements in future levels of profitability when making the initial annual report outsourcing disclosure.

While the principles of agency theory suggest that CEOs are granted higher compensation packages to better align their motives to those of the firm's shareholders, empirical research has not supported a positive relationship between rising CEO pay and firm performance. Some results even suggest a negative relationship. This dissertation argues that if organizational outcomes are determined by the integrated skills and talents of its dominant coalition, and if the management of a firm's trajectory is a shared process, then, the disparity in rewards between the CEO and those that work closest to him becomes an important area of study., The dissertation investigates the antecedents of pay disparity and proposes that the quality of a firm's governance marked by independent boards as well as higher levels of blockholders will be more likely to temper and better align the CEO's compensation and thereby reduce pay disparity. Empirical results support the major propositions as firms with independent Chairman of the Board, fewer interlocking directors, and higher levels of blockholders were found to have lower levels of pay disparity between the CEO and non-CEO executives. Pay disparity was tested both at the firm level and at the individual executive level and both were found have a significant effect on non-CEO executive turnover for up to two years., Central to the dissertation is a moderation model which proposes that pay disparity has a profound effect on an executive team's ability to integrate its diverse experience and educational background, and consequently, its capacity to respond strategically to its changing competitive landscape. The study examines the education, age, tenure and functional background of top management teams of Fortune 500 firms and finds support for the assertion that the positive relationship between heterogeneously composed teams and firm performance is contingent on rewards equality between the CEO and balance of the top team membership. The findings suggest that higher levels of pay disparity attenuate the negative aspects of cognitive diversity serving to impede the firm's competitive performance.
