The evaporation of water in the ocean can lead to hyper salinity caused by the extra substances left behind during the process. The Florida bay is surrounded by the Florida loop current and the Florida Keys, its salinity reading has been recorded as high as 70 ppt, double the normal capacity of seawater. Show moreThe evaporation of water in the ocean can lead to hyper salinity caused by the extra substances left behind during the process. The Florida bay is surrounded by the Florida loop current and the Florida Keys, its salinity reading has been recorded as high as 70 ppt, double the normal capacity of seawater. The bay salinity depends on the amount of fresh water released from the Everglades and the magnitude of water outputted to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the ratio between the amount of water evaporated and the amount of precipitates left in the remaining water pool. For this research nine saltwater treatments from 0 to 40 ppt in increments of 5 ppt were constructed to examine how evaporation rates are affected by varying salinities. During this study, data were collected from each of the nine treatments before and after evaporation. The data recorded included salinity readings, pH levels and volume of water evaporated. The analyses of this data will determine the relationship between salinity levels and evaporation rates.

Show moreTortuous, or twisted, arteries and veins are commonly observed in humans and animals diagnosed with diseases caused by the degeneration of photoreceptor cells. However, the mechanisms of their formation and development are poorly understood. We used immunocytochemical, confocal imaging and computer remodeling techniques to map the angiographic changes in the photoreceptor degenerative mouse model, pde6d (rd1) mice. We found that mechanical instability and rewiring in the distal retina of rd1 mice could be mechanisms for the initiation and development of these tortuous vessels. We also found that in the late stages of retinal degeneration, severe tortuosity leads to ischemic attack in the distal retina. This study provides valuable insights into understanding the pathologic changes of retinal blood vessels in the development of diseases in humans and animals.

Calculus is a division of mathematics that involves finding derivatives, integrals, and properties of functions. One subdivision of calculus is differential calculus which deals with continuous change and its applications. Another subdivision is differential calculus which deals with the rates at which quantities change. Although calculus was not discovered until the 1670’s, by Sir Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz, it still is relevant today and can be used in the “real world”. For example,...

Another subdivision is differential calculus which deals with the rates at which quantities change. Although calculus was not discovered until the 1670’s, by Sir Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz, it still is relevant today and can be used in the “real world”. For example, calculus can be applied to the physical interactions in the game of baseball, the shape and color of rainbows as well as finding the area under a bridge. This project will prove that calculus is not something that can be just learned in the classroom but can be applied to everyday life.

Design of replacing clean water with rainwater for a typical house is presented.

The men of the elite prized their prowess in defending their tribal pagan traditions, which defined their place in society. Once Islam was established, those who were most respected in pagan times, instead, became the ones who were most looked down upon because they were against the new order. Islam effectively shifted the center of power from those who were wealthy in the tribe, to those who embraced Islam first; who were disproportionately women and slaves. It is crucial to put early Islamic traditions under the lens of cultural continuity from Pre- Islamic tradition to understand the development of power in tribal society and how this affected gender relations and patriarchy.

Our findings show that there is a statistically significant difference of financial literacy based on factors such as income level and age group.

There are lots of people, even proficient economists who were stunned by the economy’s positive trend over the past few months. While there is a strong growth in our country’s economy, there is no clear way to see what the future has in store. The purpose of my research is to see how people are preparing financially towards their future. My goal is to see if people started saving for retirement, and how worried they are about the future. I am interested to see how much people saved so far. What I found is that many people did start to put money away for retirement, but they are worried about the future regardless of how much they have saved so far.

Show moreThe development of innovations is a company’s lifeline to a successful future. However, the rate of new product failures is alarming. Companies are faced with important decisions regarding which new products should be launched. The purpose of this study is determine if a stripped down concept formulation generated different reactions from respondents that did a lifestyle embellished visual concept formulation in a concept test for an innovative lifestyle brand. Fifty participants answered questions regarding a set of t-shirts with catchy sayings, designed specifically to fit college lifestyles. The embellished version produced higher scores in how participants thought the new t-shirts reflected who they are and how the t-shirts can fit in situations similar to respondents. Our recommendation to companies is to use an embellished concept test when marketing lifestyle products. Adding more detail to the concept test can help consumers visualize how the new product will fit with their lifestyles.

Show moreThis study tests the long-term durability that can be developed in concrete batches made with recycled aggregate concrete. Durability is a broad term used to define the resistance of a material to weathering effects, but in this scenario, durability will be defined as a drop in the compressive strength of the concrete. To test this, thermal sensing was used to determine the maturity of the concrete, or in other words how far along the curing process the concrete is. This was then plotted against the corresponding concrete compressive strength to create a relationship that can be exploited to project the later age strength of the concrete. This data is paramount in determining the viability of recycled concrete aggregate because it is a sustainable alternative to other coarse aggregate material, an essential part to making concrete, but its’ properties are largely unknown since they can be highly variable.

Show moreThe current study aims to examine correlates between binge drinking behavior with licit and illicit drug use among college students. Thirty-seven undergraduates (6 male) completed questionnaires concerning alcohol consumption throughout the one month duration of the study. Participants performed three cognitive computer tasks at both baseline (T1) and follow-up (T2) assessment. At T2 participants also filled out a drug usage questionnaire. This study stems from a larger longitudinal pilot study. Strong correlations were found for increased cigarette use: the number of drinking days reported, r (34) = .442, p =.007, as well as non-binge drinking days and marijuana use, r (34) =.465, p =.004. Cigarette smokers were more likely than not to partake in multiple drinking behaviors. Marijuana was found to be used more on days in which binge drinking did not occur alluding to a preference to smoke rather than drink excessively while smoking marijuana.

Show moreAnimal protein production systems are reaching production capacity limits due to their associated ecological detriments. Therefore, a global shift towards an ecologically sustainable alternative is vital, and hence exploring the scope of market for such alternatives.“ Cultured meat”, or ex vivo cultivated meat, may indeed serve as a viable alternative. However, although this method aims to lessen environmental woes, one current drawback is the ambiguity of consumer acceptance. This study addresses this concern through calculus of potential markets. Indeed, through surveying about 5,000 people worldwide, with focused populations in the United States and University undergraduates, statistically significant results of positive consumer interest in cultured meat were attained. After survey completion, over 75% of participants expressed interest in eating cultured meat (interested in “probably” or “definitely” eating cultured meat). Ultimately, this novel study ought to serve as a foundational framework for catalyzing funding towards privatized and academic research on cultured meat.

Our team explored new innovative designs in order to revamp current state of the art products on the market. The team took initiative to focus on a more autonomous functioning device rather than a user-controlled system. The design would have capabilities to locate and transport to pre-determined locations for optimal proficiency to launch t-shirts to fans in all ranges of the venue/stadium. Similarly, alongside with automatic dynamic abilities, the device must control the pitch and rotation of the barrel while firing t-shirts and launch multiple rounds of shirts in one trial run. The device will provide an overall better experience for corporate or private investors to interact with their fan-base delivering free merchandise within the limitations of the respected venues.
