As a consequence, there is increasing interest in understanding its life history. Show moreThe exotic apple snail Pomacea maculata appears to be gradually extending its range and increasing its density through much of south Florida. As a consequence, there is increasing interest in understanding its life history. One difficulty encountered in studying P. maculata is that it lays large, multilayered clutches of very small eggs that are impossible to count without disaggregating the egg mass; which results in the loss of viability. Using a previously described dis-aggregation technique, we weighed, dis-aggregated, photographed, and counted 70 egg masses of P. maculata collected from various locations in Lake Okeechobee. Using the resulting mass and egg numbers we developed an algorithm that reliably relates clutch mass to the number of eggs in a clutch, allowing the estimation of the number of eggs in a clutch without impacting the eggs’ viability and paving the way for investigations into studies on fecundity, hatching rate, etc.

Flame can record audio, screenshots, keyboard activity and network traffic. It also has a kill switch to erase itself. Its program modules are encrypted. We are writing a misuse pattern to describe its architecture. A pattern is a solution to a recurrent problem in a given context. A pattern embodies the knowledge and experience of software developers and can be reused in new applications. A security pattern describes a mechanism or procedure to defend against an attack. A misuse pattern describes how a misuse is performed from the point of view of the attacker. It defines the environment where the attack is performed, countermeasures to stop it, and provides forensic information in order to trace the attack once it happens.

Show moreAntibiotic resistant bacteria infiltrate drinking water, increase human exposure, and spread into clinical settings. Regulatory agencies need simple test for ARI to monitor environmental quality. This study is first to measure resistance in a consortium of bacteria, not pure cultures. Our rapid method – “In-the-zone” (ITZ) employs a) the size of zones of inhibition b) identity of bacteria in the zone c) number of resistant clones within zones of inhibition and d) type of antibiotic to compute ARI. Results can be obtained within 24 - 48 hrs with very little effort. This semester, we repeated the test and validated the weighting of various parameters. The ITZ assay yield consistent and reproducible data on zones of inhibition of bacteria community. The diameter of inhibition zones was the most important parameter distinguishing resistomes of varying ARI. Landfill, manured garden, and waste plant samples scored highest in antibiotic resistance index compared to beach sand.

Show moreEarth’s environment has been undergoing unprecedented rates of degradation during the Anthropocene paradigm. Current projections for the near future show climate change producing grim outcomes for most habitable parts of the world. This thesis defends the argument that in order to adequately address the state of the environment, humanity must experience a shift in collective consciousness away from the current philosophical paradigm, and instead adopt a paradigm that enables a common mindset regarding the place of humans within the natural environment. Various forms of spiritual ecology are explored: deep ecology, biblical eco-theology, and eco-feminist theology. These positions are explored in order to introduce a framework necessary to achieve the collective shift in consciousness required to address environmental issues: a Spiritual Framework of Organic Oneness, which includes components of spiritual ecology and earth-centered religious traditions.

Show moreClimate change is causing shifts in species geographic distributions. This trend is seen throughout the globe but the impact is especially noticeable in marine environments, which are highly sensitive to phenological and ecological alterations. Here, systemic shifts have cascading effects on the food web, productivity, and event timing. Throughout the tropics and the subtropics, mangrove trees act as the primary foundation species that dominate the intertidal zone. In particular, red mangroves Rhizophora mangle play a crucial role by acting as substrate for sessile species within their ecosystems. In these ecosystems, secondary foundation species that can colonize the prop roots of the red mangroves thereby further affecting the structure of the community. The original habitat architecture limits species variety and the effectiveness of species to utilize the space. Habitat architecture is strongly influenced by the foundation species that form the base for community structure. Investigating the connections between a primary foundation species, secondary foundation species, and the resulting biodiversity of sessile species is critical to understanding the variability of the ecosystem. Association with certain foundation species may provide a more positive environment for certain taxa than others and thus ease stressors that otherwise could functionally eliminate a species from the ecosystem. In addition, these associations can have cascading effects on neighboring species and neighboring ecosystems. Here, we conducted a presence/absence survey from Key West to the Kennedy Space Center to identify the species that utilized mangrove prop roots as habitat, their associations, and distributions.

Show moreFriendships are important for adolescent adjustment and development; however, adolescent friendships are fleeting. Friend dissimilarity and undesirable individual attributes have been hypothesized to predict friendship dissolution. The present study tests each as predictors of adolescent friendship dissolution. A sample of 410 U.S. adolescents participated in a total of 573 reciprocated friendships originating in the 7th grade. These friendships were followed annually from 8th-12th grade to determine when each friendship dissolved. In the 7th grade, participants completed a peernomination inventory, and teachers completed a survey of each participant’s school competence. Discrete-time survival analyses used 7th grade friend dissimilarity and individual characteristics of sex, age, ethnicity, number of friends, peer acceptance, peer rejection, leadership, physical aggression, relational aggression, peer victimization, and school competence as predictors of the occurrence and timing of friendship dissolution. Friendships originating in the 7th grade were at greatest risk for dissolution during the first year. Only 1 percent of friendships that started in the 7th grade lasted 5 years. Friend dissimilarity on sex, peer acceptance, physical aggression, and school competence predicted friendship dissolution. At each grade, the odds of friendship dissolution were higher for friends dissimilar on these characteristics. Individual characteristics failed to predict friendship dissolution. The findings suggest compatibility is a function of similarity between friends rather than the presence or absence of a specific individual trait. Adolescents seeking friendships with individuals dissimilar from them on school-related characteristics risk suffering the downside of dissimilarity, namely rapid friendship dissolution.

Show moreThe ocean currents off Florida are a renewable and energy dense resource capable of providing Florida with about 25% of its electricity needs. This current is strongest at the sea surface and decreases in strength with depth such that the individual rotor blades on ocean current turbines (OCT) deployed to harness this resource will operate in stronger currents when positioned vertically upwards than when vertically downwards. This current shear will induce cyclic loadings on the rotor blades unless active control is used to reduce these load variations. A direct adaptive individual blade pitch controller is implemented into a numerical model simulating an OCT operating in the Gulf Stream. The adaptive controller is analyzed with the OCT simulated in both stationary and moored configurations. The results concluded that the IBP controller reduced the amplitude of the loads in the stationary and moored simulations by 91.18% and 92.3%, respectively.
