Show moreImmigration policies in the United States remain a paramount topic in shaping the nation’s sociopolitical culture in the status quo; nuances in public sentiment pertaining to both immigration and are imperative in recognizing the broader implications of this issue. To gauge public sentiment on this and associated issues, a poll was conducted titled Taking America’s Pulse 2016 Class Survey. The Survey organization was the German data and analytics firm, Growth from Knowledge (GfK) Group, and was sponsored by Cornell University faculty members, Peter K. Enns, Ph.D., Professor of Government, and Jonathon Schuldt, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Communication. This research will examine two (2) questions from the referenced 2016 poll, Question I, “Do you think the number of immigrants admitted into the US is too high, too low, or about the right amount?” and Question II, “Would you support or oppose a proposal to increase penalties for undocumented immigrants who overstay their visa in the US?”. This secondary data analysis further studies the aforementioned questions by examining respondents’ political party affiliation.

We reported that nicotine disrupts the properties of DCs that are pivotal in the initiation of immune response to vaccines. Here we investigated whether TLR agonist(s) could overcome the effects of nicotine on human DC and DC-NK cross-talk essential for effector T cell generation. nicDC, nicDC-NK, and nicDC-NK-T cultures exposed to TLR agonists were evaluated for expression of costimulatory molecules, cytokines, and intracellular cytokine IFN-g using ELISA and flow cytometry. Our data shows that among the TLR agonists, TLR3 and TLR8/7 synergistically optimized nicDC maturation co-cultured NK cell activation. Importantly, similar to DC-NK, nicDC-NK treated with TLR3 and TLR8/7 and co-cultured with naïve T cells promoted a comparable number of effector T cells. Our data suggest that the addition of appropriate TLR agonist(s) to vaccine formulation could potentially improve the smokers’ immune response to vaccination.

Show moreNurse leaders need to possess stress management skills to support their effective and successful management of their patient service units. Meditation is frequently cited within the literature as an option for a number of workforces to cultivate being present, and recognizing and reducing stress. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the impact of a personal systematic meditation practice for nurse leaders on their reported stress, mindfulness, sense of control and self-esteem and patient satisfaction on the nursing units they manage. The study employs a repeated measures intervention design for nurse leaders at two sites with a mixed method integrated approach. Focus group interviews, patient satisfaction scores and four valid instruments are used for data collection at baseline, week 6 and week 12; the instruments Mindful Attention and Awareness Scale (MAAS), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Rosenberg Self-Esteem (RSE) and Locus of Control (LOC).

Studies detailing the composition of sensory axons are rare, but they have shown that ontogenetic and sexual dimorphism exists in the anterior lateral line nerve (ALLN) of numerous species. This study obtained a count of the number of axons comprising the ALLN in male vs. female and adult vs. juvenile yellow stingrays (Urobatis jamaicensis). We hypothesized that males have more axons than females, and that the number of axons is ontogenetically constant. We expect males to have 30% more axons in their ALLN, and that the number of axons is ontogenetically constant for both sexes. This study will provide unique data about the electrosensory nerves of Yellow stingrays that can be used in future studies to make comparisons between other species.

Prototypical designs provide assurance and familiarity. High-designs signal superior quality, exclusiveness, and prestige. Continued high performance gives authentic designs the real deal reputation. Results contributed to product design literature by revealing buyer’s initial impressions of prototypical, authentic, and high-design forms, the independent variables. The dependent variables were functionality, ergonomics, hedonism, self-expression, authenticity, and information search. Plan of action included a convince sample of 60 millennials, personal distribution/ collection, manipulation check, and questionnaire pretest. Methods included secondary, survey, and experimental research. Ethical practice conformed to APA style, and consent forms. Reliability/validity was heightened by items borrowed from scholarly journals. Key findings: 1) high-design scored highest on self-expression, hedonism, and information search but lowest on ease of use; 2) prototypical design posed the greatest injury hazard; 3) Authentic design signaled highest functionality.

Military sonar used by the US Navy to detect submarines emit noises as loud as rocket blasts. These noises infiltrate the ocean and marine mammals get disoriented, have permanent hearing loss, get stranded, or die. With practical safety procedures in place, whales and other marine mammals can be protected from navy sonar. Striking a balance between the nation’s security and the safety of marine mammals can be achieved by passing legislation that takes into consideration both needs. With quality policies such as reducing sonar usage in times of peace in locations that have a high concentration of marine mammals and avoiding sonar use in areas in which they migrate to and feed from, marine mammals can be protected. These safety measures can be passed by using adjudicatory actions.

We also construct a physical Maxwell coil using 3D printing and traditional electronic components and compare results of field uniformity with those of the numerical simulations. We find that the Maxwell coil provides the benefit of both high uniformity in field and high mechanical accessibility to that field. These properties allow us to better study special properties of this field experimentally.

Show moreNew software technologies are rapidly changing the economy. These changes have presented problems such as job displacement, high barrier to entry, and a gender gap in the engineering communities. In order to see the views of Americans regarding the challenges of software technologies, we conducted an online survey, gathering 500 responses. In recent news stories, it has been shown that there is a gender gap in the tech industry, but the women that participated in our survey are interested in learning software engineering as much as men. Additionally, our research found that younger people are not only required to use software tools more frequently but are the most interested in learning how to build them. Finally, we found that a majority of people do not have any experience developing software. Our survey highlights some of the challenges of software technologies in the economy.

Furthermore, we add different chemicals on the glass surface. This changes the contact angle of the water droplets. Doing this allows the examination of the effect of adhesion versus cohesion, in regards to the behavior of the water spreading on the plate glass. Our attempt to elucidate the relevant physics is driven by the goal of providing a basis for replacing windshield wipers of future automobiles.

To that end, the minimum specimen size must be determined that will replicate this hazardous work environment. Samples of concrete stucco surfacing material (CSSM) of various sizes ranging from 1-in×1-in. to 8-in.×16-in. were applied to masonry blocks. These specimens were tested to determine the minimum size needed to produce 150-mg/m3 (one order of magnitude larger than the OSHA exposure limit of 15-mg/m3) of airborne particulate in a 1-m3 test chamber when removed with a chipping hammer. Testing results revealed that 5-in.× 5-in. specimen size yielded on average 180-mg/m3 of particulates.
