Speech perception plays an important role in how infants begin to produce speech. This study aims to understand how changes in infant selective attention to various parts of talking faces guides their understanding of speech and subsequent production. In this study, we tracked infant (4-12 months of age) and adult gaze patterns to determine where on a face they attend, when hearing and seeing the face speak in either their native (English) or a non-native language (Spanish). Show moreSpeech perception plays an important role in how infants begin to produce speech. We also tracked infant selective attention to moving-silent and silent-static faces, to determine if this would result in different patterns of attention. The findings suggest that there are two shifts in infant attention. The first shift occurs between four and eight months of age, with infants shifting their eyes to the mouth of the talking face. The second shift occurs around twelve months of age, when infants begin to return their gaze back to the eye region when hearing and seeing their native language, but continue to attend to the mouth region when hearing and seeing the non-native language. Overall, the results of this study suggest that changes in selective attention to talking faces guides the development of speech production and is dependent on early language experience.

It is known to cause a number of negative impacts throughout the marine ecosystem. In order to better understand how much marine debris is impacting one of the local beaches, this study uses data from Loggerhead Marinelife Center, who have been conducting monthly beach clean-ups since December 2016. When sorting the debris items, each one was sorted into one of eighteen categories. In analyzing the findings, it has been concluded that, out of 3204.52 lbs. of debris, foam pieces account for 29%, while plastic pieces account for 27%. The results of this study can contribute to developing preventative measures that focus on the main source of the issue. This research is ongoing as Loggerhead Marinelife still hosts monthly beach clean-ups.

As tumors generate, there is a progression in genomic instability derived from chromosomal rearrangement and instability. Often, these manifest themselves as defects in mitosis, frequently as lagging chromosomes, multipolar spindles, and anaphase bridges. Lagging chromosomes are the result of inaccurate chromosomal division in mitosis, thus jeopardizing the genome of an organism’s offspring; they derive from several errors, such as failure of a chromosome to attach to the mitotic spindle. The goal of this project has been to characterize the mechanisms of lagging chromosomes in the cancer cell line UPCI:SCC103. Our laboratory’s work has shown that treatment with certain carcinogens increase the rate of mitotic defect. To further our understanding these defects, we are monitoring the progression of lagging chromosomes in UPCI:SCC103 cells with live cell analysis, using GFP-tagged histone H2B to track their appearance and fate, so to distinguish between the possible causes and resolutions of this mitotic defect.

The paper examines relevant examples of emission trading within the United States, including the Acid Rain Program contained within the 1990 Clean Air Act, the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, and the Chicago Climate Exchange. I address the circumstances, constraints, and degree of success of such programs in relation to the Kyoto Protocol as well as other possible permit schemes at the national level within the United States. I contrast tradable permits with other forms of environmental abatement policy including command and control regulation and taxation. Finally, I analyze the effect of several variables including population and GDP on emissions growth and draws conclusions on what extent those variables play on shaping a domestic greenhouse gas trading program.

As suggested by the above statement, this study will focus on the dynamics involved in the distribution of shark teeth throughout archaeological sites in Broward County noting whether there are noticeable changes in the frequency of their distribution over time, or whether it is relatively constant. The study will attempt to better understand the important role of the southeast Florida transverse Glades waterways in the coast to inland commerce of shark teeth.

An alliance of socialists and trade unionists operating first as the Labour Representation Committee and later as the Labour Party, attempted to represent the working class in a Parliament dominated by labor oriented Liberal Radicals. The exigencies of World War One forced the ruling Liberals to enlist Labour's support. However, after receiving Labour's pledge of cooperation, neither the government nor the trade union executives protected workers from wartime exploitation. Then too, the wartime necessity of collectivist policies implemented under two coalition governments convinced the skeptical unions of the practicability of parliamentary socialism. The First World War elevated Labour to national prominence while it facilitated the decline of Liberalism in Britain.

De Luca's work often defies traditional attempts at translation due to its philosophical and polysemantic nature ; more than mere essays or accounts of, for instance, his involvement with humanitarian missions in Bosnia, his work consists of reflections on life and language itself. De Luca, himself a prolific translator from Ancient Hebrew, Russian and Yiddish, oftentimes emphasizes the origins of specific words, making carefully studied choices in his own writing. Therefore, in addition to the six carefully produced translations with special attention paid to De Luca's word choices and an awareness of the etymological weight each one carries, this thesis shall also provide a theoretical framework emphasizing a sense-based translation which will allow the freedom necessary to explore De Luca's polysemy as well as commentary highlighting the challenges encountered in translating his work.

The system uses vehicles themselves, equipped with simple inexpensive devices, as gatherers and distributors of information without the need for costly road infrastructure such as sensors, cameras or external communication equipment. Additionally, we present a flexible simulation and visualization framework we designed and developed to validate our system by showing its effectiveness in multiple scenarios and to aid in the research and development of this and future VANET applications.

The program is related to multi-channel, trunked communication systems, and it associates the number of channels and users as a function of system grade of service by implementing Poisson, Erlang B, Erland C and Crommelin-Pollaczek traffic models. The user will be able to choose between the different traffic models mentioned above via a menu. Then he will be asked to enter the parameters for the unknown variable(s) he wants to find. At this point, he will have to enter some other parameter values for which he is designing, and finally, the computer program will give the desired results (i.e., the number of servers needed, possible total traffic offered to the system, probability of loss or delay).

With the aid of eye-tracking technology (analyzing visual fixations and saccadic patterns of licensed drivers), this paper will examine the visual salience and effectiveness for the redesign of two specific road signs. We hypothesize remodeling the optical characteristics will improve visual attention for a given background and thus, reduce the number of traffic violations and ensure public safety.

Show moreAircraft engine fan trailing edge noise prediction is very challenging. To achieve a better understanding of the physics of the propagation problem, the fan has been modeled as an infinite cascade of blades and acoustic monopoles and dipoles have been placed at the trailing edges. The flow has been computed using the Transonic Small Disturbance equation. As soon as the critical Mach number is exceeded by the free stream, a supersonic region that joins two consecutive blades appears. It completely blocks the sound and limits the study to entirely subsonic flow. In this type of flow, a sound propagation simulator has been implemented. The linearized form of Howe's equation is solved by a high frequency method. The ray caustic problem which causes regular ray tracing failure is fixed by interpolating the field on a preset grid. Results are compared with the analytical solution in uniform flow and computations in realistic flow are presented.

Although many therapy horse training methods exist, which is the most effective? I propose to test whether clicker training is superior to training using praise and touch as a reward. Eight horses, paired by gender, will be randomly assigned to be either clicker trained or trained using praise and touch as a reward. A different task will be assigned each week for four consecutive weeks to each group. For each task, I will record the number of correct responses within a given time or length of time taken to complete the task correctly, depending on the task. I predict that the clicker-trained horses would learn faster, be more calm and confident, and look forward to training sessions. Indicating that the use of audible signals as secondary-reinforcers is a more effective and efficient training method. opt-out vs. an opt-in system and controlled financial payment for organs.
