Show moreWithin the Caribbean, the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique are unusual: they are French overseas departments and thus also European Union members. As such, they must assimilate to French national culture even though their heterogeneous populations, mainly descendants of exploited imported labour, have their own unique island identity. Their heavy economic dependence on France and the effects of modernization and globalization pose further identitarian challenges for them. Franco-Antillean literature clearly reflects this long-standing identity confusion. This thesis explores two very recent novels— Toxic Island by Guadeloupean Ernest Pépin and L’Empreinte à Crusoé by Martinican Patrick Chamoiseau— and their divergent stylistic treatments of individuation. Both are inspired by Édouard Glissant’s theories of Relation and Tout- Monde; both engage questions of language, orality, the island space, race, the subject of alterity and the role of the arts and artists in identity formation. Yet both are also marked by distinctly unique forms of ambivalence.

Show moreThe presence of heavy metals and other pollutants is detrimental to marine ecosystems. The queen conch, once an important fisheries species in the Florida Keys, has not sufficiently recovered after a 25-year fishery closure. Research has shown high levels of copper and zinc in the gonads and digestive glands of adult conch found in the nearshore waters. Four sites relevant to queen conch larval recruitment were tested in 2010 for the presence of copper and zinc in the water, phytoplankton, sediment, and seagrass epiphytes over seven months. Both metals were detected in all sample types and no seasonal or geographical differences were detected. Surface water concentrations from the field were used to conduct acute and chronic toxicity tests on various ages of queen conch larvae and their phytoplankton food source. When zinc concentrations (0-40 (So(Bg/L) similar to those measured in situ were used, there was no significant impact on conch larval survival although some velar lobe de velopment was impaired. However, field concentrations of copper (0-15 (So(Bg/L), which often surpassed water quality standards, negatively impacted growth, survival, and development of the larvae. Chronic exposure to copper, through the water and food, disrupted the metamorphic success of competent larvae and decreased post-metamorphosis survival. Exposure to copper at later life stages increased mortality, suggesting that heavy metals have a negative effect on larval recruitment in localized areas of the Florida Keys. Structural equation modeling revealed that copper and zinc are moving through the systems differently and are best represented by two different models.

Basic language concepts and definitions are introduced initially to provide the background for defining TPL, which is intended as a means to illustrate language concepts, and has Type-3 grammar as a data type. A formal definition of TPL is given in the form of an SLR(1) grammar. TPL is implemented by a syntax directed compiler and a hypothetical machine for which the compiler provides code. The machine is emulated by a Pascal program, making TPL highly portable. It is also possible for the interested user to enhance the power of TPL by writing more functions for practical purposes.

Show moreManatees, who use their vertebral column to propel themselves in swimming, are the product of a major evolutionary shift from land to water. This project explores the structure of trabecular (spongy) bone, which changes with force direction and magnitude, from the vertebral column of manatees. The goal of this research is to investigate the structural properties of manatee vertebral trabecular bone to better understand this animal's development and swimming mechanics. Vertebrae were dissected from four regions of the vertebral column and scanned with micro-computed tomography. Images were analyzed in BoneJ to quantify trabecular width, number, length, bone volume fraction (amount of bone/total area) and degree of anisotropy (orientation bias). Results from this project will be paired with mechanical data in future work to better understand forces on the vertebral column in a swimming mammal throughout development, and how these properties may have diverged from those found in their terrestrial counterparts.

Show moreThis dissertation makes the connection between the human drive, as described by psychoanalysis, to construct God and the construction of the technological entity, Google. Google constitutes the extension of the early Christian period God to the twenty-first century. From the examination of significant religious and theological texts by significant theologians (Augustine, Thomas, Luther, Calvin, etc.) that explain the nature of God, the analogous relationship of God to Google will open a psychoanalytic discourse that answers questions on the current state of human mediation with the world. Freud and, more significantly, Lacan’s work connects the human creation of God, ex nihilio, to Google’s godly qualities and behaviors (omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence, and omnibenevolence). This illustrates the powerful motivation behind the creation of an all-encompassing physical / earthly entity that includes the immaterial properties of God. Essentially, Google operates as the extension or replacement of the long reigning God in Western culture. Furthermore, the advent of science and technology through rationalism (as outlined by Nietzsche) results in the death of the metaphysical God and the ascension of the technological God. Google offers an appropriate example for study. Moreover, the work of Jean Baudrillard and Marshall McLuhan will further comment on Google as the technological manifestation of God, particularly in its media formulations. Finally, this dissertation concludes with a review that highlights future research with an exploration that foresees the death of Google from the same rational method of inquiry by which the death of God occurred at the end of the nineteenth century.

Show moreWomen's movements and feminisms in Brazil have taken various forms throughout the years, contributing significantly to socio-political actions that favor gender justice. However, Brazilian feminisms remain on the margins of American academic discourse. In the United States, conceptualizations of feminism are often complicated by epistemological practices that treat certain political actions as feminist while dismissing others. The invisibility of Brazilian feminisms within feminist scholarship in the United States, therefore, justifies the need for further research on the topic. My research focuses on feminist articles published by Revista Estudos Feministas, one of the oldest and most well known feminist journals in Brazil. Using postcolonial, postmodern, and critical race feminist theories as a framework of analysis, my thesis investigates the theories and works utilized by feminists in Brazil. I argue that Brazilian feminisms both challenge and emulate the social, economic, and geopolitical orders that divide the world into Global North and South.
