Show moreThe trim analysis for the initial state and control inputs that satisfy response periodicity and flight conditions, and the Floquet eigenanalysis for a few largest eigenvalues of the Floquet transition matrix (FTM) are investigated. In the trim analysis, the convergence of Newton iteration is investigated in computing the periodic initial state and control inputs sequentially and in parallel. The trim analysis uses the shooting method and two h-versions of temporal finite element methods, one based on displacement formulation and the other on mixed formulation of displacements and momenta. In each method, both the sequential and in-parallel schemes are used, and the resulting nonlinear equations are solved by damped Newton iteration with an optimally selected damping parameter. The reliability of damped Newton iteration, including earlier-observed divergence problems, is quantified by the maximum condition number of the Jacobian matrices of the iterative scheme. For illustrative purposes, rigid flap-lag and flap-lag-torsion models based on quasisteady aerodynamics are selected. Demanding trim analysis conditions are included by considering advance ratios or dimensionless flight speeds twice as high as those of current helicopters. Concerning the Floquet eigenanalysis, the feasibility of using the Arnoldi-Saad method, one of the emerging subspace iteration methods, is explored as an alternative to the currently used QR method, which is not economical for partial eigenanalysis. The reliability of the Arnoldi-Saad method is quantified by the eigenvalue condition numbers and the residual errors of the eigenpairs. In the three trim analysis methods, while the optimally selected damping parameter provides almost global convergence, the in-parallel scheme requires much less machine time than the conventional sequential scheme; both schemes have comparable reliability of the Newton iteration without and with damping. The Arnoldi-Saad method takes much less machine time than the QR method with comparable reliability.

Show morePresident Jimmy Carter's foreign policy changed significantly and progressively over the course of his four year term. What began as a liberal-internationalist approach to foreign policy ended in a traditional Cold War stalemate with the Soviet Union. There are many causes for this shift: changes in the international environment, shifting public opinion, and other domestic-political pressures. One of the most consistently undervalued causes for Carter's overall foreign policy shift was the personal influence of his National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski. Through a variety of advocacy pressures and framing tactics, Brzezinski was able to utilize the changes in the international system, and especially, changes within domestic-political environment to convince Carter of an extensive reformation of his foreign policy perspective and priorities.

In this work, we report that the only exoribonuclease in M. genitalium, RNase R, is able to generate mature 3'-ends. The aminoacyl-acceptor stem, CCA terminus and discriminator residue plays an important role in stopping RNase R digestion at the mature 3'-end. Disruption of the stem causes partial or complete degradation of the pre-tRNA, whereas extension of the stem results in the formation of a mature 3’-end. CC residues in CCA terminus and A or G residues at discriminator position are the most preferred residues for precise stopping of RNase R at mature 3’ end. The significance of this works shows that M. genitalium RNase R generates mature tRNA in a single step by recognizing features in the terminal domains of tRNA, a process requiring multiple RNases in most bacteria.

Show moreLanguage, and more specifically gender within language, is the central component in French feminist writer Monique Wittig's war on gender. In her works Les Guerilleres and Le Corps lesbien, Wittig uses a deconstructionist methodology to wage war on the binary gender construct that privileges the masculine and reduces the feminine to the position of inferior and "Other." In order to accomplish her project of subverting the existing phallogocentric ideology and displacing the gender system that denies women any claim to the universal, Wittig experiments with pronouns, expands the notion of the theory of universalism, creates neologisms, revisions myths, epics, and fairy tales, and interweaves secondary narratives within her texts. With these literary strategies, Wittig succeeds in creating a Trojan horse capable of destroying old oppressive forms and generating new revolutionary discourse which expands the semantic space for females.

The eel species, Nemichthys scolopaceus, inhabits these waters, and little is known of its diet, its place within pelagic food webs, and its overall ecological impact. In this study we quantitatively estimate the abundance, feeding and predation impact of this key predator. Specimens were collected in 2004 along Georges Bank as part of the Census of Marine Life Gulf of Maine project. Gut contents were analyzed, revealing thirteen prey types, primarily euphausiids and decapod crustaceans. Other potential prey (i.e. fishes) were absent from the diet, suggesting a fairly selective feeding preference. Of the 85 fish species collected, N scolopaceus ranked second in abundance and first in total fish biomass. Therefore, this species is not only a large biomass contributor, but perhaps cycles a great deal of macrocrustacean carbon through deep-pelagic fishes in this, and likely other, ecosystems.

Show moreOctopus predation and species selection contribute to community structure in benthic habitats, where plastic pollution accumulates. This study investigated how the bioactive plastic additive oleamide alters trophic interactions and behaviors of the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) and its prey. We quantified activity budgets and trophic interactions for octopuses and multiple prey types (hermit crabs, free-living crabs, bivalves, and gastropods) before and after exposure to oleamide. Our analysis suggested that some taxa (octopuses and hermit crabs) exhibit more active behaviors during oleamide exposure. Free living crabs responded primarily to the threat of octopus predation, while other taxa did not show clear behavioral responses. Exposure to oleamide increased trophic interactions and the probability of mobile prey taxa being observed on the same side of the aquarium as the octopus, thus increasing the opportunity for predation. Our results support previous research showing that plastic leachates can impair decision-making, making prey more susceptible to predation.

Show moreHurricane Andrew, in 1992, represented a watershed event in illuminating the financial consequences of Florida's business and political leaders decisions fostering population and economic growth without planning or control. The frontier mentality of the early generations of pioneers carried over to later developers and politicians, and led to a vision of empty land as unlimited economic opportunity The assumption of regulatory control of the insurance industry by state government allowed the completion of the emerging national housing policies for fully securing mortgages These policies essentially made property insurance mandatory. The retention of the cartel operation of the insurance industry led to an inequitable relationship between industry and regulators. Assertive political decisions created this crisis.

- TRUCK PARKING STUDY: UNVEILING THE PARKING SPACE DENSITY AND TRUCK VOLUME RELATIONSHIP: PHASE 1.
- Creator
- Zhang, Yunlong, Wang, Bruce, Freight Mobility Research Institute
- Abstract/Description
-
Truck parking problem has been a national concern for many years due to the lack of parking space along the major freight corridors. How to assess the parking capacity adequacy remains a major challenge in addressing the provision of parking space. This study aims to reveal the relationship between the incoming truck volume and the parking capacity needed for the rest area under the hours-of-service (HOS) regulations through computer simulation.

Show moreAge-related neurodegenerative diseases impact society in an increasing rate. Oxidative damage to cellular molecules is considered the main cause of many neurological diseases such as, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, etc. Understanding the mechanism and what cleans up oxidized molecules is vital in order to further explore therapeutic research for neurodegenerative diseases. RNA damage is potentially a major contributor to these diseases. However, compared to our knowledge about DNA, little is known about the mechanism that cells use to eliminate damaged RNA. Our objective in this study is to understand the role of proteins that specifically bind oxidized RNA. We will focus on one such protein TruD in Escherichia coli. By studying how TruD and its mutants help E. coli to survive oxidative stress, we hope to elucidate a mechanism by which cells fight against RNA oxidation, and to suggest disease-preventing mechanisms by the human TruD homologs on a molecular level.
