In this dissertation, we used a Monte Carlo approach to model both the SuperKamiokande (SuperK) detector in Japan, and the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) in Canada. A neutrino flux produced by a supernova code was implemented to simulate a realistic signal. An analysis of the minimum neutrino mass which could be detected was then performed for SuperK which produced discrepancies for the zero tau mass case when compared to previous work using a smooth emission spectrum as the incident neutrino source. As a result, we reconstructed the neutrino parameters involved in the supernovae explosion mechanism, to correct this discrepancy and determined the minimum mass for a realistic source. The source reconstruction is also useful for empirically determining the explosion mechanism when the next galactic supernova event occurs, since at present, this mechanism is still not entirely understood.

These qualities can be demonstrated by answering the following questions: (1) Is the quality of the spectral information on a color infrared DOQQ comparable to a SPOT and TM Landsat satellite imagery for the purpose of digital image classification? (2) What are the optimal number of classes for achieving an accuracy supervised classification of a one-meter resolution DOQQ? (3) What is the effect of changing the spatial resolution on image classification of a DOQQ?

Show moreThis thesis is an application of the current economic theory of Julius Margolis and Walter Hirsch on the supply and demand for public goods and services. It is shown that the demand for public services has a negative slope and that conscious cutbacks in services result in an upward shift and movement to the left along a new supply curve, thereby increasing the unit cost of the service or good. Next, it is argued that forecasting municipal expenditures based on a small sample can yield meaningful results if care is exercised in adjusting and compiling the data base. It is concluded that there exists a significant level of explanatory power to the small body of current economic literature within this field.

Show moreAs the global population is increasing, the generation of various waste materials (fats, oils and grease, fruit waste etc.) is increasing, which when landfilled, takes up valuable landfill space. Anaerobic digestion techniques have been developed that potentially convert these waste materials into energy and fertilizer, thus reducing landfill demand. It has been hypothesized that addition of high strength organic waste to conventional wastewater sludge can enhance the generation of onsite biogas at wastewater treatment plants, to meet the energy requirements of the plant partially or fully. To determine the anaerobic biodegradability of fats, oils and grease and fruit waste residuals, lab scale ultimate digestibility tests were conducted for a period of 63 days under mesophilic conditions. High strength organic wastes, thickened waste activated sludge and inoculum were mixed at 9 different ratios, and the mixtures were incubated in 500 mL serum bottles. After 63 days, the highest methane yield of 280 mL/gVS and 243 mL/gVS were obtained with mixtures containing 10% FOG with 10% red apples and 10% FOG only respectively whereas the methane yield of inoculum was only 8 mL/gVS. Preliminary cost analyses were conducted using the laboratory derived data

Show moreThe Supported red blood cell membrane (SRBCm) was developed on a piezoelectric sensor to study the attachment of nanoparticles to erythrocyte surfaces. A well-dispersed colloidal suspension of fragments of RBCm was prepared from whole blood, and characterized thoroughly using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential analysis. To develop SRBCm, RBCm fragments were immobilized onthe sensor in a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring system. A complete monolayer of flattened fragments of RBCm was formed on the positively charged surface of the piezoelectric sensor in 1 mM NaCl and 0.2 mM NaHCO3 at pH 7.1. The surface morphology of SRBCm was characterized via atomic force microscopy. The even distribution of surface proteins expressed on erythrocytes was found on SRBCm through indirect immunofluorescence microscopy. The attachment efficiencies of model nanoparticles, e.g. hematite nanoparticles and carboxylated polystyrene nanoparticles, on the SRBCm were quantified using a classic methodology. Show moreThe purpose of this multi-site study is to gain an understanding of what practices principals are employing that are impacting the effectiveness of the instructional coaches, as measured by student achievement on end of year state assessments. This study looked at three Tier 3 schools in Miami Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) that showed significant improvement in student achievement as measured by the statewide assessments. Tier 3 schools are schools in MDCPS that have been identified by the Florida Department of Education as consistently underperforming. This dissertation sought to understand what practices were implemented by the principals in these schools that the instructional coaches considered supportive of their instructional coaching. The study participants consisted of 3 principals, 3 assistant principals, 3 coaches, and 3 teachers, for a total of 12 participants. The assistant principals were interviewed because they are tasked with supervising various content areas and as such work directly with the coaches. The teachers were interviewed because the role of coaches is to work directly with the teachers, therefore the teachers have insight into their effectives. The participants were asked to reflect on their experience either as an instructional coach or working with the instructional coach. They participated in a 30-to-45-minute interview. Additionally, the school improvement plans, and coaching logs were analyzed.

Show moreThis study examined how two high schools have successfully increased graduation rates while serving minority-majority and impoverished communities. Data collected for this qualitative, multi-site, case study employed publicly-available archival materials, interviews, focus groups, and observations in leadership meetings to help narrate a story that takes into account the complexities of human relations, specifically those in school settings in an urban school district. Thirty-four participants were selected by the principals at the participating schools and included members of their leadership teams, such as literacy coaches, assistant principals, magnet coordinators, students, parents, security specialists, and guidance counselors. The conceptual framework of the study was based on three research questions. The first question examined the synergistic relationships between the selected middle and the high schools with the purpose of addressing students’ at risk of dropping out factors in the areas of academic engagement, behavior, and attendance. The second question investigated the different types of initiatives enacted to provide support and efforts to engage or reengage students. The third question was used as a guide to observe the effects that the principals have on the work of stakeholders and how they serve their students. This study examined the various ways in which two high schools and their three feeder middle schools combine efforts to reengage students academically and socially. The selected high schools have demonstrated success in graduation rates while serving minority-majority students in areas of poverty, as determined by the high percentage of students qualifying for the Free and Reduced Lunch program. The findings indicate the existence of purposeful collaboration between personnel with an emphasis on programmatic continuum, communication, and other initiatives to strengthen articulation. Further, this study identified various forms of support programs for students to remain engaged or reengage, such as extracurricular activities, mentoring, and expansion of interest-based classes. Lastly, the findings demonstrate that the principals involved in this study clearly established a mission and vision and their leadership teams enact such with a balance between their own initiatives and adherence to the goals of their respective school leaders.

Recent evidence suggests that the supramammillary nucleus (SUM) is an important link from the pontine reticular formation (PRF) to the septum-hippocampus in the generation of hippocampal theta rhythm. I proposed: (1) injections of WGA-HRP into the SUM would produce retrograde labeling in PRF cells; (2) lesions of the SUM would produce a reduction in the frequency and amplitude of hippocampal theta rhythm; (3) injections of procaine into the SUM would attenuate the amplitude and reduce the...

I proposed: (1) injections of WGA-HRP into the SUM would produce retrograde labeling in PRF cells; (2) lesions of the SUM would produce a reduction in the frequency and amplitude of hippocampal theta rhythm; (3) injections of procaine into the SUM would attenuate the amplitude and reduce the frequency of reticular elicited theta rhythm. Although WGA-HRP injections in the SUM produced minimal labeling in the PRF, there were labeled cells in the central gray of the pons, and in the dorsal raphe and surrounding regions. I found that lesions of the SUM produced minimal changes in the frequency and amplitude of theta in the behaving animal but that injections of procaine attenuated both of these measures in the urethane anesthetized rat.

Show moreThe separation of powers doctrine is a pillar of American government, characterized by the separation and balancing of legislative, executive and judicial powers. Throughout its history, the Supreme Court has alternated between formalism and functionalism in its separation of powers jurisprudence. The Court relied upon a greater use of the formalistic separation of powers over a functional, balancing of governmental powers as a way to check congressional delegations of authority to administrative agencies. While conservative formalists invalidated numerous presidential initiatives and congressional delegations to agencies, liberal justices used the functional model after 1937 to uphold delegations of power until the Court revived the formal-functional debate. Analysis of Court decisions regarding congressional versus presidential power over agencies is essential for understanding the revival of the debate over agency viability within tripartite government in three landmark cases: INS v. Chadha, (1983) Bowsher v. Synar (1986) and Morrison v. Olson (1988).

Heterozygous mutation in PTEN, which encode a negative regulator of the PI3K-mTR signaling pathway, causes the macrocephaly/autism syndrome. Mice with germline heterozygous Pten deletion (Pten+/-) exhibit both brain overgrowth and social behavioral deficits. Here, we showed that reduction of Igf-1 receptor (Igf-1r), which is an upstream receptor of PI3K-mTOR pathway, in Pten+/- mice rescues the neuronal overgrowth of cortical layer V neurons, which is associated with social behavior deficits shown in the Pten+/- mice. These are promising results shows that a pharmacological agent, one that blocks Igf1r, could recover the damage done by the Pten mutation. However, the pathway being targeted is a cellular pathway within the brain and any potential pharmacological agent must be able to cross the blood brain barrier, and must alter the pathway within the brain and not influence other pathways within the system.

Show moreA study was made of the photoconductivity transients in zinc-doped polycrystalline stannic oxide. The current rises and decays during and following illumination were observed for varying time, intensity, and wavelength of illumination, and for different ambient temperatures. This experimental data was analyzed assuming that the photoconductivity transients are surface controlled processes involving the chemisorption and desorption of oxygen. Models used to describe the observed data were based on either an Elovich-type phenomenological rate equation or a mechanistic physical description of the processes involved. These models, using the observed data, were then compared for ranges of validity and self-consistency.

Show moreThe impingement of supersonic jets on surfaces is of interest because of its important application to jet blast deflectors (JBD), and short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft (STOVL) during hover. Typically, on an aircraft carrier deck, the impingement of the jet blast on the deflector generates impingement tones, and structural vibrations, not only on the JBD but also on the ship deck. Therefore, apart from direct transmission of jet noise to the gallery level, there is a component of noise transmitted due to the impingement of the jet on the JBD. The objectives of this work are to study the pressure spectra (i) on a flat plate, and separately on a cone due to axisymmetric impingement of a supersonic underexpanded cold jet issuing from a convergent-divergent nozzle and (ii) on a plane jet impinging on a finite plate and an adjoining ground plane due to the impingement of a planar jet on the plate. The characteristics of the surface pressure fluctuations are numerically investiga ted using WIND-US 2.0. The time-dependent, compressible Euler equations for perfect gas are employed for the present computations. The impingement distance between the jet nozzle and the deflector plate, and the plate inclination with respect to the incident jet are varied. The impingement zone stagnation bubble and a high-speed radial jet with several embedded structures (shocklets) were identified on the perpendicular plate. Flows involving cones reveal the presence of detached cone shocks, enclosing a recirculation zone. The location and magnitude of the peak pressure on the cone surface are a strong function of the cone apex angle. For the two-dimensional jet impingement on angled plate the peak value of pressure occurs at normal jet impingement. The pressure at the intersection point of the plate and the ground plane is sometimes higher than the peak pressure on the plate. Beyond this point there is a sharp decrease in pressure. As the flow accelerates, an oblique shock is, Beyond this point there is a sharp decrease in pressure. As the flow accelerates, an oblique shock is sometimes formed in this grazing flow region. A recirculation region at the lower lip of the nozzle was observed for all the separation distances and plate inclinations.
