According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 47,000 individuals died in 2017 due to an opioid overdose. Further, dentists are more likely to prescribe immediate-release opioids than other healthcare providers. In the late 1990s, dentists were responsible for 15.5% of prescriptions for immediate-release opioids, and 8% of these prescriptions in 2009. In the late 1990s, dentists were responsible for 15.5% of prescriptions for immediate-release opioids, and 8% of these prescriptions in 2009. In this thesis I examine the reasons for this, including the ways in which a patient’s sex, age, race, and ethnicity play a role in dental prescriptions, and conclude that dentists do not consistently use the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMPs) or the guidelines set by the American Dental Association. I argue that to help to prevent opioid misuse and abuse dentists should do a risk assessment before prescribing opioids.

Sherlock Holmes has been popular in Japan since the Meiji Restoration (1868-1912), but no critic has yet connected Holmes and the protagonist of the recent graphic novel Death Note (2003-2006). While American detective fiction has defined itself somewhat in opposition to Arthur Conan Doyle, Japan embraced Sherlock Holmes and created a series of detectives modeled on the English icon. These characters live and work in Japan, but they are never more than Japanese versions of an English original. Although Japan has a long history of adaptations and translations of Doyle's writings, no Japanese character has exemplified Holmes as fully as L, the protagonist of Death Note. While L is clearly similar to Holmes, he also blends English and Japanese characteristics in a way that no Japanese detective figure before him managed to do, and thus becomes the first quintessentially Japanese Sherlock Holmes.

Such harsh sentences for such young offenders seem drastic and unfair, therefore I argue that the juvenile justice system should take not a punitive but a rehabilitative approach to minors. I first discuss different theories of why society punishes and whether they apply to the way juveniles are punished today. Drawing on research in psychology, I detail key cognitive differences between minors and adults to argue that juveniles have no place in adult correctional facilities as they are not designed to cater to the special needs of growing adolescents and expose them to harsher conditions than are found in juvenile facilities. Finally, I propose an alternative strategy that focuses more on prevention or the rehabilitation of convicted juveniles rather than punishing them.

This thesis establishes an inventory of approximately 150 miles of saline shorelines within the greater Jupiter area, categorizes their type and use, and documents changes from 1953 to 2016. Information was compiled in ArcGIS and Microsoft Excel from a variety of sources including modern and historical aerial photography, zoning maps, water quality reports, and ground-truthing. The largest category of shoreline type was found to be Mangrove (61.9mi, 43%) and the largest use category was Residential (79.5mi, 55%). The study area includes the Loxahatchee River and connected water bodies such as the Intracoastal Waterway and Jupiter Sound from Donald Ross Road to the northern reaches of the Loxahatchee’s North Fork.

Several models of burnout have been proposed, but Christina Maslach’s (1976) model continues to be the most prominent, with her Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) remaining the most commonly used burnout assessment tool. According to her model, burnout is made up of three dimensions: exhaustion, cynicism, and inefficacy. Multiple studies have found that burnout is most highly associated with factors involving an excess of job demands and a lack of personal and professional support. Prolonged burnout is associated with decreased effectiveness on the job, multiple health problems, and an increased risk of substance abuse. Burnout researchers have found evidence which points to increased burnout levels among mental health workers, though a few studies contain evidence that mental health workers may not be at a higher risk of burnout than employees in other fields.

In November 2018, voters in Florida voted to once again amend the State’s Constitution, this time to restore the franchise to previously convicted felons. This thesis addresses the question: How did millions of people come to be disenfranchised by what appears to be a racially neutral law?

In this thesis I begin by introducing the Big Bang theory and discussing arguments for and against it. Then, I argue that the Big Bang Theory and the Biblical account of creation align in their descriptions of the origin of the universe. Thus, I ultimately argue that the Big Bang theory and the Biblical account of creation are not mutually exclusive.

Samuel Huntington's thesis in the "Clash of Civilizations" is incorrect because the United States is not at war with Islamic world; rather the conflicts involving the United States in the Middle East are driven by realist national and strategic interests of security, oil, and domestic policy. The unprecedented recent wave of Arab revolutions in 2011 have made it more vital than ever to understand the true reasons for the United State's conflicts in the Middle East so that prudent future foreign policy decisions can be made.

Show moreRecent findings show it is possible to genetically target Chandelier Cells (ChC) by using transgenic animals expressing a CRE recombinase under the control of a transient transcription factor. This targeting allows for continuous expression of a Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) to study ChCs intrinsic cellular processes. However, the expression of GFP in these mice is weak and the transient transcription factor limits the ability to achieve cell type specific expression of genes. To overcome these problems a technique of transplanting transfected ChC-progenitors into the cortex of developing mice, using single cell electroporation, was created. To compare both methods an analysis of the axon arborization and innervation of ChCs on post-natal day 16 and 21 in mice brains was done. The results show there is not a significant difference between the transplanted and intrinsic signal brains, and that the process of transplantation is a viable method for studying the ChC development.

Three strains of H. pluvialis from various culture collections, Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa (CCAP 34/8), Nation Institute of Environmental Studies (NIES-144), and Scandinavian Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa (SCCAP K-0048), were tested in different conditions to compare the synthesis of astaxanthin. The strains were compared in three different conditions, high light (control), low pH, and addition of salt water, and the amount of astaxanthin produced was compared using a 2-way T-test. This research is of interest to explore different methods for producing astaxanthin for the growing market.

In direct contrast to this style is the style of surrealist film, which depict dreamlike images and operate in a fashion that abandons the 'real' and no longer follows the rules of traditional storytelling constructs. Fusing these two styles into a short film, I aim to artistically explore the phenomenon of productivity, procrastination and purpose. I first examine the historical and cultural origins of science, the figure of the scientist, and 'objectivity.' Then, I explore science's obsession with the body in the many works and theories that have been developed since its origination in the seventeenth century. Finally, I apply critical feminist science studies to Michael Shermer's usage of the word 'pseudoscience' in his book, Why People Believe Weird Things. My proposed solution is that we stop using such a term in order to hold science accountable for its problematic aspects and legacies. I also suggest that we adopt Donna Haraway’s concept of ‘situated knowledge’ to replace objectivity.

In the West, men and women are compared in a hierarchical gender dualism that claims men to be the cultivators of culture while women are the uncivilized yet passive and receptive fertile beings that are linked closely with the earth. Using theories from anthropology and ecofeminism, I show that the association of women with nature and fertility has led to their exploitation around the globe. Furthermore, racism played a role in the type of population control used on groups of women. I trace the use of Depo-Provera, Norplant, sterilization and even birth control pills in the population control policies pushed by Western politicians. I argue that these policies can be traced back to the eugenics movement and the association of women with untamed nature in need of male civilizing.

Summary measures of population health provide a way to present information about both mortality and morbidity of a given population as a single metric. This project utilized gretl, an open-source statistical package, to model the data using ordinary least squares (OLS) in order to determine if there is a correlation between health, which was quantified using summary measures of population health, and child labor. The regression analysis showed that there is a significant correlation between child labor and health adjusted life expectancy (HALE) at birth, but not between child labor and disability adjusted life years (DALYs).

A Fairy Without Wings is an Urban Fantasy novel-in-progress that follows the active kidnapping of two female Fae: Melli and Bridge. Melli and Bridge, unlike many others, make no attempts to hide their Fae features. This made the girls easy targets for poachers. The novel-in-progress uses the theory of evolution in relation to the fantasy race known as Fae in an urban setting to demonstrate the impact of misinformation from the media on social climate. This demonstration acts as a metaphor for real world misconceptions and social climate revolving around evolution. This thesis aims to illustrate the relation between the novel’s themes of media misrepresentation of information and real-world examples affecting our current society. This relation is the damaging impact that media misrepresentation has on social opinions that can lead to radicalizing of social issues such as racism, homophobia, and xenophobia.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the lifeways of the local Native American and to identify what faunal resources they were exploiting. My analysis focused on both invertebrate and vertebrate faunal material taken from levels 3-6 of Column Sample 'A' which was excavated from the site in 2001. More than 11 000 fragments of shell and bone were analyzed over the four levels, which led to the identification of several species of mollusks, crustaceans, fish, sharks, rays, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. The results of this study showed that the Native Americans primarily exploited marine resources and overtime there was an increased reliance on saltwater over freshwater resources.
