Show moreThroughout the 1900s, the sense of a distinct sicilianita-or Sicilian-nessmanifested itself in writings by Italian authors such as Giovanni Verga, Luigi Pirandello, Leonardo Sciascia, Vincenzo Consolo, and Andrea Camilleri, among others. Interestingly, a parallel phenomenon has emerged in the United States in the broader field of Italian-American literature. While attempting to redefine the concept of Americanness and expand the canon of American literature so that it embraces articulations of ethnic identities, many Sicilian-American writers have turned their works into literary manifestations of their Sicilian Americanness, or, as I have called it, sicilianamericanita. In this study, I try to answer questions such as: Why and how have some Sicilian- American authors fashioned their Italian-American identity in regional terms? How did a sense of sicilianita develop in the US and turn into sicilianamericanita? And how did the above-mentioned phenomenon materialize in Italian-American literature? My examination focused on Jerre Mangione's memoirs, Rose Romano's poetry, and Ben Morreale's novels. While Mangione consistently capitalized on his regional ethnic identity mainly in order to correct some of the most unfavorable prejudices, and especially those originating from Mafia, Rose Romano writes poetry and prose dealing with issues of regional self-ascription which overlaps with contestations of traditional gender roles, heterosexual scripts, and racial categorizations. Ben Morreale's sicilianamericanita takes on intertextual aspects, creating a closely-knit net of relations with the Sicilian tradition in Italian literature. Many Sicilian-American writers, just like their Sicilian counterparts, have come to see their regional ethnic identity as a source of inspiration for the growth of a distinctive literary tradition. This study has been conceived as an initial small step towards a process of inquiry and exploration of the common ground between Italian and Italian-American literatures. Such critical endeavors and international cooperation between both fields of literary studies could bring forth a better understanding of the cultures, and also strengthen in significant ways the status of both literatures within and outside their respective national critical communities.

Using the theoretical frameworks of Jacques Lacan, Bracha Ettinger, and Andrâe Bazin, the paper argues that La jetâee presents a model of phallic memory corresponding to a Lacan's understanding of desire and subjectivity, while Sans soleil offers a model of matrixial memory based on Ettinger's theorization of the gaze. Bazin's work is used to address aesthetic issues, as well as providing a method for exploring how the phallic and matrixial frameworks impact the formal construction of the films. Ultimately, La jetâees model of phallic memory is shown to sever past from present in a manner corresponding to Lacanian notions of desire, castration, and loss, whereas Sans soleil demonstrates the potential of matrixial memory to establish a liminal relationship between past and present.

Response times were largest in the boundary region and the interaction between the two factors was localized to the boundary region and the voiced endpoint. There was also a response time advantage for context consistent responses specifically in the boundary region. These results and those of earlier research (Connine, 1987; Connine & Clifton, 1987) are described in terms of interactive activation of potential response categories by acoustic parameter and sentence context.

This study tests how likely conjunction errors, along with other recognition errors, occur when participants watch videos of people both with and without unusual facial features performing actions after a week time lag. It was hypothesized that participants would falsely recognize actresses in the conjunction item condition over the other conditions. The likelihood of falsely recognizing a new person increased when presented with a feature, but the conjunction items overall were most often falsely recognized.

As an insufficient number of Latino males are graduating with post-secondary degrees, more research must be conducted to explore their educational journey from the community college to the university and how to best support them through their transition. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative narrative research study was to explore the stories of Latino male students as they transfer from a community college to a university. To capture the essence of Latino male students’ stories through the community college transfer experience to university, the research questions focused on what motivated and influenced their journey through the community college to a university. The research questions that guided this study were: What motivated and influenced Latino males’ decisions to enroll in a community college? What motivated and influenced Latino males’ decisions to transfer from a community college to a university? How do Latino male transfer students describe their transition from community college to a university? In this qualitative narrative research study, 10 participants participated in in-depth, semi-structured virtual interviews and completed two journal prompts. To assist in triangulation and validity, participants reviewed the data for accuracy, and thick rich descriptions were used to provide breadth and depth to their narratives. Once the data were collected, it was organized through the qualitative research data management software MAXQDA and analyzed using in vivo, descriptive, and pattern coding. The conceptual frameworks that informed this narrative study were the hero’s journey by Joseph Campbell (2008) and transition theory by Nancy K. Schlossberg (2011).

Show moreThis study explores the strategies utilized by migrants under the visa regime of international student and their experiences throughout their time as non-immigrant temporary visitors. The concept of “visa regime” forwarded by Banerjee (2022), illustrates the mechanism of state power that controls immigrants and their families through limited legality (Banerjee 2022). Through the qualitative methods of in-depth interviews and ethnographic work, this study compares the experiences of 20 Brazilian international students in a geographical area known for its ethnic communities. South Florida is home to one of the two largest Brazilian communities in the United States, offering an array of opportunities and community support for Brazilian migrants. As demonstrated in this study the experiences of participants demonstrate how the status of international student becomes a waiting room for those hopelessly waiting for an opportunity to acquire permanent residency. With limited pathways to acquire a green card, the waiting room may seem endless for some with limited resources. Leaving both migrants and the educational institutions enabling this waiting room in a vulnerable position.

To provide a deeper understanding into Native American students at SU this study centered Native American students’ voices as it relates to their lived experiences in matriculating and persisting at SU. This study used an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. Mixed methods research combines both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analyses (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2007; Ivankova et al., 2006; Merriam & Tisdell, 2016; Teddlie & Tashakkori, 2009). A sequential mixed methods design is conducted through sequences, in this study, phases, beginning with quantitative data collection and analyses and followed by qualitative data collection and analysis (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2007; Ivankova et al., 2006; Merriam & Tisdell, 2016; Teddlie & Tashakkori, 2009). Show moreThis phenomenological study examined the experiences of Black male alumni in higher education to gain an in-depth understanding of the aspects that facilitated or impeded their desire to persist to degree completion. This study situated the internal and external aspects that supported or inhibited Black male persistence. And, this study examined how Black male alumni navigate race and racism in higher education. Critical race theory (CRT) is used in this study to examine the lived experiences of Black male alumni at predominately white institutions (PWIs) in higher education. The focus on alumni aids in implementing an anti-deficit approach to highlight Black male success. Anti-deficit research rejects the perpetuation of at-risk research, which presents Black males as incapable of thought production, lazy, criminal and violent. Instead, an antideficit approach illuminates Black male academic achievement and is strategic in replicating success for future Black male collegians. This approach was deemed necessary to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of Black male alumni at PWIs.

In the light of this "cultural turn," this study comparatively investigates the apparent differences between the two versions of the novella "Maldito amor" and "Sweet Diamond Dust" by the critically acclaimed Puerto Rican Rosario Ferre. To read Ferre's two versions taking into account translation theorist Lawrence Venuti's concepts of "foreignizing" or "domestication" of a text, evidences the need of new theoretical formulations to critically situate these rare cases of authors who "write between languages," and (re)create their work in another language.

Mill addresses one causative element of this crisis, a perception of himself at twenty as a "mechanical man." Yet these much-quoted words understate a greater point. I shall argue that Mill's crisis was the destruction of an almost purely mechanical consciousness, or at least a strike at his foundations of a breadth and severity that has not been fully addressed by Mill scholarship. I shall consider various aspects of Mill's life and thought before and after the crisis as a means of identifying the nature of this fundamental change in Mill. These aspects of Mill's thought include philosophy, economics, epistemology, poetry, and politics, and these aspects of Mill's life include education, his relationship with his father and Bentham, his early activism, his influences, and his perceptions of man and society.

In this novel, Harry Wilbourne, a doctor and scientist, denies his androgyny while Charlotte Rittenmeyer, his lover and a sculptor, finds comfort and harmony in both her masculine and feminine traits. Harry faces a gender identity crisis when Charlotte, pregnant, decides to abort their child. Only after Charlotte dies of a botched abortion does Harry accept his memories--his responsibility for his past life with Charlotte (a masculine characteristic)--as well as his grief--over Charlotte's death and the loss of the grand passion he shared with her (feminine emotions). Title: THE "OBLIQUE EFFECT" IN THE SPATIAL REPRESENTATION OF CHILDREN FOR THE HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL PLANE.

Abstract/Description: The effect of stimulus plane orientation (horizontal vs vertical) on mirror-image oblique discrimination was investigated for children 5 to 8 years of age. A significant difference in learning rate favoring the vertical plane presentation was obtained. Tracing the stimuli had no effect on learning rate in either the horizontal or vertical plane. The results were explained in terms of egocentricity in the child's representation of spatial relations.

Show moreI argue that Margaret Atwood’s work in MaddAddam is about survival; it is about moving beyond preconceived, thoughtless ideology of any form with creative kinship. Cooperation and engagement cannot be planned in advance, and must take the form of something more than pre-established ideology. I will discuss MaddAddam in light of Donna Haraway’s recent work in which she argues that multispecies acknowledgement and collaboration are essential if humans are to survive and thrive in the coming centuries. By bringing the two texts into dialogue, one sees that Atwood’s novel constitutes the kind of story deemed necessary by Haraway for making kin in the Chthulucene. Various scenes depicting cooperation and interdependence among humans and other animals offer chthonic models of kinship; these relationships, as opposed to ideological and anthropocentric isolation, will serve as the means of surviving and thriving within an ongoing apocalypse.

However, the impact of sexologists' theories served to pathologize and stigmatize these relationships. Muriel Spark was a product of the girl's school education in the post-Freudian era. While many scholars have studied The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie for its spiritual or moral content, few have discussed the sexuality and lesbian content in the novel. This thesis discusses the sexual dynamics of the two main characters, Jean Brodie and Sandy Stranger, while taking into account the social, psychological, and biographical influences on Spark's novel. Romantic friendship is a compelling force in the narrative which drives each character in their vacillation between loyalty and betrayal.

Show moreThis study investigates the impact of the Trinidad and Tobago Panyard steelpan experiences on the development of the secondary school, forms one to three (middle school), music teachers’ pedagogical implementation, and how these pedagogical practices are represented in today’s classroom or not. The case study exploration acknowledges that while the instrument was being developed in formal educational systems, there was already a history of teaching and learning of the steelpan in the community Panyard contributing to its global growth. The symbiosis among instructional practices in the Panyard, the K-12 system, and postsecondary institutions continues to be the fertile space for understanding steelpan curriculum and instruction. Using the lenses of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, Decoloniality and Legitimation Code theory I analyzed these Panyard steelpan experiences and their impact on teachers’ pedagogical practice. I used some of the data to map the observed integrative knowledge building using the Autonomy dimension of Legitimation Code Theory. “Within-group cultural practices” and “common, across-group cultural practices” (Paris, 2012, p. 95) were also analyzed iteratively, contributing to the growth of both the researcher and participants. This study intentionally provided opportunities to understand Steelpan's histories and social constructs better. Moreover, participants’ backgrounds, biographies and experiences also provided contextual evidence for their pedagogical perspectives (Greene, 2001).

Show moreUsing content analysis and in-depth interviews, this study finds variation in perspective of mental health in 1) how it is framed on social media platforms by mental health treatment advertisements and 2) how woman perceive their own mental health struggles, how they sought and maintain treatment, and how the culture of social media influences this perspective. To investigate this topic, this study is separated into two phases: Phase One is a content analysis of 25 mental health treatment advertisements for depression and/or anxiety on Facebook and Instagram with three questions in mind: 1. How do advertisements on social media frame depression and anxiety? 2. What are the solutions proposed? And 3. How are women represented in these advertisements? Phase Two consists of 14 in-depth interviews with three questions in mind: 1. How do women understand their mental health problems? 2. How do social media advertisements affect women seeking mental health treatment? And 3. How does social media affect current course of mental health treatment? Social media advertisements do medicalize women’s perspective of mental health and can best be understood in three terms: communication, convenience, and confidence, through an interplay of medicalization and gender framing. Women give meaning to their mental health through their experience in past and current life circumstances and the culture of social media has shifted understanding and engagement with this dynamic.

Show moreLabor literature is in popular and academic neglect. I argue that labor literature's neglect is unjust, and I provide a way of examining labor literature that can rescue it from neglect. I shall be concerned with labor literature's academic decline due to its apparent lack of value according to traditional standards of literary criticism. I will argue that ethical criticism - criticism of literature that considers the ethics of a work as a part of its literary value - can reveal new complexities in labor literature. An ethical critical analysis of the representation of American labor movements and workers in noncanonical texts will show the distinctive ethical value such texts hold. I will argue that labor texts possess ethical value insofar as they help readers develop awareness of complex ethical issues posed by labor and community, and that the ethical value of labor literature provides a new reason to value such works.
