- Abstract/Description
-
In order to remember an event, one must remember the participants in the event, the actions that are performed, and which people performed which actions. Often people make binding errors in memory in which they remember the people and the actions, but they incorrectly remember one person as the person who performed an action that was actually performed by someone else. Half of the participants in our study saw a series of actions with each action performed by one of two actors. The other half...

Often people make binding errors in memory in which they remember the people and the actions, but they incorrectly remember one person as the person who performed an action that was actually performed by someone else. Half of the participants in our study saw a series of actions with each action performed by one of two actors. The other half of the participants saw each action performed by a different actor. We found that older adults were more likely to make binding errors than were younger adults. Younger adults were equally likely to make binding errors in the two conditions. Older adults, however, made many fewer binding errors when they saw only two actors during encoding than when they saw many actors during encoding.

Studies have also revealed that readers organize information through Gestalt’s theory of proximity when the panel structure is altered. This paper explores the separation of text and image from the constraints of the traditional comic book format. Through the utilization of an eye-tracking system, this experiment will examine the limitations of the Gestalt theory and the effectiveness of comprehension. The task of processing the plot of the novels relies heavily on the efficiency of the reader’s ability to apply context by using the accompanying imagery and text via data collected from saccadic patterns, fixations, and gaze analysis. This study coincides with the idea of universal communication by acknowledging that there are multiple ways to comprehend information, with the expectation of gaining further insight on the conscious and subconscious methods of visual processing.

Military sonar used by the US Navy to detect submarines emit noises as loud as rocket blasts. These noises infiltrate the ocean and marine mammals get disoriented, have permanent hearing loss, get stranded, or die. With practical safety procedures in place, whales and other marine mammals can be protected from navy sonar. Striking a balance between the nation’s security and the safety of marine mammals can be achieved by passing legislation that takes into consideration both needs. With quality policies such as reducing sonar usage in times of peace in locations that have a high concentration of marine mammals and avoiding sonar use in areas in which they migrate to and feed from, marine mammals can be protected. These safety measures can be passed by using adjudicatory actions.

There are two classes of MH genes: Class I and II; Class II can be further divided into Class II A and II B genes, this study focuses on Class IIB. Class II B genes are exceptionally variable in sequence. Leading hypotheses propose that this genetic variation is maintained by selection for resistance to pathogens. Since pathogens are constantly evolving to avoid detection, and new pathogens regularly enter populations, which MH proteins confer immunity fluctuates over time. This study examines MH Class II B in Centropomus undecimalis, the common Snook. Genes will be sequenced, and their variability quantified using approaches that include: database searches (NCBI), PCR, and sequencing. Sequencing of the MH gene will provide insight on how high polymorphism results from immune responses to infectious pathogens.

From officers’ perspectives, notable characteristics of “legitimate” cases are identified. Next, the relationship between a case’s legitimacy and acceptance of specific rape myths are analyzed. A conclusion that can be drawn is that, police officers endorse few rape myths that affect their judgement in recommending cases. However, another study demonstrates that cases that do not go to court also correlate with negative experiences between the victim and officer. I explore a possible explanation that would suggest rape myth acceptance plays a more influential role in policing than previous studies suggest. Lastly, I conclude with general weaknesses in existing literature as well as potential areas of further study.

Much of decomposition is attributable to bacterial activity. Identifying a net change in bacterial composition throughout the PMI of a decomposing carcass helps to explain the mechanism of decomposition. Carcasses of four feral swine were placed in cages in direct sunlight, whereby soil samples were taken prior to and following seven days of decomposition. Bacterial DNA was then isolated from the soil samples and amplified via polymerase-chain reaction. Further metagenomic analysis was conducted by an outside agency using 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) amplicon sequencing to determine the composition of the bacterial community. A relationship between the stages of decomposition and the anatomy of bacterial communities involved was determined, which helps to elucidate the process of decomposition.

Show moreThe purpose of the project was to see if giving students a structured physical activity break after a lesson and before the intended summative assessment would increase their scores academically and/ or decrease their test anxiety. The idea was acquired from spending over 1,000 hours in elementary school classrooms ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. It was observed that after a 30-minute math lesson, the students were expected to take an assessment based on the content of the lesson. It seemed as if students were having a difficult time focusing on the test and were getting wiggly in their seats. The students seemed nervous to take a test directly after instruction and some of the scores were not as high as intended. This was the basis behind conducting this research. There had to be a solution to this problem and the researcher was determined to find one.

Products such as Enterprise Office 365 are already using it, available for any user in Office 365 Midsize Business, Enterprise, Academic, and Nonprofit plans as well as the standalone versions of Exchange Online and SharePoint Online. The log-in verification feature is aimed at reducing users' vulnerability to online identity theft, phishing, and other scams by adding a second level of authentication to an account log-in. Twitter, Apple, PayPal, Google, Facebook, and other vendors already have implemented it. After correctly entering their username and password, users need to acknowledge a phone call, text message, or an app notification on their smartphone before they can gain access to their account. Two-factor authentication is the most common form of MFA and requires the use of two of the three authentication factors: Something only the user knows, something the user has, and something only the user is. In this work we will analyze some varieties, do UML models of their structure and dynamics, and compare MFA to other authentication approaches.

Our results indicated that 56% of daily activity occurred between 0600 – 0800 h and >95% of the daily activity was found in images taken between 0600 and 1400 h. The wading bird activity showed little variation and no obvious correlation with water depth fluctuations (highest recorded density = 2.1 birds/ha at 14.9 cm depth; lowest recorded density = 0.05 birds/ha at 35.1 cm depth). The wading bird activity occurring between 0600 – 1400 h accounts for >95% of daily activity. We conclude that a study of water depth and average wading bird density earlier in the nesting season is needed for a clearer effect of water depth on wading bird foraging activity.

As a consequence, there is increasing interest in understanding its life history. One difficulty encountered in studying P. maculata is that it lays large, multilayered clutches of very small eggs that are impossible to count without disaggregating the egg mass; which results in the loss of viability. Using a previously described dis-aggregation technique, we weighed, dis-aggregated, photographed, and counted 70 egg masses of P. maculata collected from various locations in Lake Okeechobee. Using the resulting mass and egg numbers we developed an algorithm that reliably relates clutch mass to the number of eggs in a clutch, allowing the estimation of the number of eggs in a clutch without impacting the eggs’ viability and paving the way for investigations into studies on fecundity, hatching rate, etc.

While there is a strong growth in our country’s economy, there is no clear way to see what the future has in store. The purpose of my research is to see how people are preparing financially towards their future. My goal is to see if people started saving for retirement, and how worried they are about the future. I am interested to see how much people saved so far. What I found is that many people did start to put money away for retirement, but they are worried about the future regardless of how much they have saved so far.

These changes have presented problems such as job displacement, high barrier to entry, and a gender gap in the engineering communities. In order to see the views of Americans regarding the challenges of software technologies, we conducted an online survey, gathering 500 responses. In recent news stories, it has been shown that there is a gender gap in the tech industry, but the women that participated in our survey are interested in learning software engineering as much as men. Additionally, our research found that younger people are not only required to use software tools more frequently but are the most interested in learning how to build them. Finally, we found that a majority of people do not have any experience developing software. Our survey highlights some of the challenges of software technologies in the economy.

Show moreThe evaporation of water in the ocean can lead to hyper salinity caused by the extra substances left behind during the process. The Florida bay is surrounded by the Florida loop current and the Florida Keys, its salinity reading has been recorded as high as 70 ppt, double the normal capacity of seawater. The bay salinity depends on the amount of fresh water released from the Everglades and the magnitude of water outputted to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the ratio between the amount of water evaporated and the amount of precipitates left in the remaining water pool. For this research nine saltwater treatments from 0 to 40 ppt in increments of 5 ppt were constructed to examine how evaporation rates are affected by varying salinities. During this study, data were collected from each of the nine treatments before and after evaporation. The data recorded included salinity readings, pH levels and volume of water evaporated. The analyses of this data will determine the relationship between salinity levels and evaporation rates.

Results from a survey shows 8 out of 10 people are being misdirected around the Boca Raton campus causing delays, traffic, and frustration. The architectural design of the Boca Raton campus buildings makes navigating even more difficult because of their identical qualities. The directory maps on campus fail to inform current position, are visually overwhelming and are outdated. From the research collected, we will create a cohesive navigational system that makes travel easier for visitors, students, and faculty. The new navigational system will comprise of a redesigned directory, numeric building signage, route markers, and an instruction manual.

In the midst of the current refugee crisis, how might countries decide who accepts and denies refugees into their borders? We answer this by focusing on the laws and regulations that have been implemented since the 1951 Refugee Convention. The attitudes toward refugees and how the crisis is handled are an accurate reflection of the discrepancy between states’ responsibilities and states’ needs. We investigate the history of the laws and how states have found loopholes through the rules and regulations through court cases. Through this research, we are able to understand the legalities of how refugees reach safety and who takes responsibility when a government ultimately fails its people.mitter in the brain.
