One of the most novel and widely unexplored fields of reproductive health is oncofertility, a field of medicine that aims to minimize the negative impacts of cancer treatment on fertility. For many childhood cancer patients, cancer treatment involves oncofertility-related discussions that involve their families, physicians, and many other people. This paper serves primarily to evaluate the quality of educational and clinical resources available to childhood cancer patients regarding fertility preservation, the current approach to these cases from an ethical perspective, and to propose a procedure for treatment plan development and decision making that carefully considers the values and beliefs of the patient, his/her family members, physicians, and ethics board members involved with the case to help standardize the process.

The practice of people enhancing their natural features dates back several millennia before written text to ancient Egyptian and other early civilizations. Throughout time, these augmentation methods have been studied and perfected to create what is now a multibillion-dollar industry. The earliest forms of cosmetics derived from locally available natural resources but over time transformed to incorporate synthetic and potentially harmful substances including lead, formaldehyde, and benzophenone. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the timeline of cosmetic use and to inquire into the compulsion to use cosmetics for embellishing the natural look, the introduction of artificial chemicals into cosmetics, the minimal protective legislative guidelines currently in place, and the necessary reforms required to ensure the safety of the consumer.

This thesis applies Smith‘s framework to the Venetian population in Italy. Modern Venetians based their national identity on the Myth of Venice, positive memories about the independent Republic which existed from 697-1797. Venetian national identity developed in three waves. First, the Myth was molded from a cultural explosion in the face of political decadence during Il Settecento (Eighteenth Century). Then, Venetian intellectuals idealized their past in order to join the Kingdom of Italy during Il Risorgimento (Italian Reunification). Finally, a conservative philosophy against modernization arose during the twentieth century in response to globalization and mass tourism. Nationalist movements developed during contemporary times as modern Venetians established their national identity.

Show moreProstitution is a controversial service which went through periods of legalization and criminalization in American history. The main problem is a social taboo which considers prostitution to be morally wrongful and a social nuisance. After the Progressive Era, Congress outlawed sexual acts it deemed immoral using Commerce Clause powers. Since the sexual revolution of the 1960s, legislation regulating sex devolved to the states. Currently, prostitution is banned in forty-nine states. I argue that prostitution should not be abolished because it is not inherently harmful, it is not an immoral act, and it has liberty interests found within the United States Constitution. The federal government should define prostitution as a legal activity between consenting adults, and the states should regulate the practice as it does other legitimate professions.

Creases and Folds is a magic realism piece that follows a small family as the three members navigate their fraying connections. The story employs magic realism as a tool through which the son, Teddy, interacts with, influences, and explores the world around him, framing the journey to reconciliation. This thesis project aims to produce a coherent and compelling narrative as its centerpiece and evaluate the work’s place in the established genre.

The main Florida indigenous groups referenced are the Muscogee (Creek) and The Seminole Tribe of Florida. The main points of focus are animal symbology, relationships between native animals and group social structure, kinship relationships, and hunting practices. I also consider the adaptation of these practices as cultural diffusion and assimilation occurred between the indigenous groups and early non-indigenous settlers. I include an in-depth discussion about several animals around which the Muscogee Creek created their clans, connecting to creation stories, social structure, and ancestry. The sacred relationships between native animals and peoples goes widely unnoticed by the present-day occupants of Florida; therefore, educating the public on these connections can help them better understand the importance of wildlife preservation and conservation in the state.

The increase in prices prevent many patients from accessing insulin and result in non-adherence to their prescribed insulin doses, leading to dire health consequences. The purpose of this work is to analyze how the price of insulin increased drastically over time as a result of extended pharmaceutical patents, FDA regulations, and examine the reason behind the lack of generic insulin alternatives on the market. To make insulin more accessible for diabetic patients, the insulin market must be reformed to encourage the development of biosimilar insulin alternatives, regulate insulin supply chain price increases, and monitor the adherence to insulin of diabetic patients.

Show moreIn various Platonic dialogues, Socrates appears to discredit myth and fiction. Most notably in the Republic, he seems to argue that poetry is harmful due to its false nature and its relation to imitation which misleads those who experience it about the nature of the good. Yet, in many of these same dialogues, Socrates makes multiple appeals to myths, either using the previously constructed myths of others, or constructing stories of his own. Given that the dialogues themselves are fictionalized conversations written by Plato, a student of Socrates, he himself cannot categorically reject fictional stories. I argue that Plato’s critical examination and restriction of myth and poetry is not an absolute rejection. Rather, Plato is rejecting that poetry which ignorantly depicts falsehoods. This ignorance cultivates mistaken beliefs of what is most important; the good, right, and virtuous, and ultimately causes disharmony and harm in the souls of its audience.

Although there is a multidisciplinary literature investigating the effects and antecedents of national attachment, there is a distinct lack of research into patterns of national attachment informed by attachment theory. I review the national attachment literature in order to frame the argument for why national attachment ought to be examined from an attachment theory approach. Then, I conduct a study with 217 American adults exploring the associations between two dimensions of national attachment (anxiety and avoidance) and four psychological constructs conceptually linked with national identity (political ideology, interpersonal attachment, moral concerns, and theory of mind) in order to empirically ascertain how national attachment styles are situated within social and political psychology. A consistent association between nationalism and low anxious attachment was found.
