Show moreA study of Molecular Dynamics using computational methods and modeling provides the understanding on the interaction of the atoms, properties, structure, and motion and model phenomenon. There are numerous commercial tools available for simulation, analysis and visualization. However any particular tool does not provide all the functionalities. The main objective of this work is the development of the visualization tool customized for our research needs to view the three dimensional orientation of the atom, process the simulation results offline, able to handle large volume of data, ability to display complete frame, atomic trails, and runtime response to the researchers' query with low processing time. This thesis forms the basis for the development of such an in-house tool for analysis and display of simulation results based on Open GL and MFC. Advantages, limitations, capabilities and future aspects are also discussed. The result is the system capable of processing large amount of simulation result data in 11 minutes and query response and display in less than 1 second.

For building MCM/PHM models, vibration sensor data is among the most useful (because it can show abnormal behavior which has yet to cause damage) and the most challenging (because due to its waveform nature, frequency bands must be extracted from the signal). To perform the necessary analysis of the vibration signals, which may arrive rapidly in the form of data streams, we develop three new wavelet-based transforms (the Streaming Wavelet Transform, Short-Time Wavelet Packet Decomposition, and Streaming Wavelet Packet Decomposition) and propose modifications to the existing Short-TIme Wavelet Transform. ... The proposed algorithms also create and select frequency-band features which focus on the areas of the signal most important to MCM/PHM, producing only the information necessary for building models (or removing all unnecessary information) so models can run on less powerful hardware. Finally, we demonstrate models which can work in multiple environmental conditions. ... Our results show that many of the transforms give similar results in terms of performance, but their different properties as to time complexity, ability to operate in a fully streaming fashion, and number of generated features may make some more appropriate than others in particular applications, such as when streaming data or hardware limitations are extremely important (e.g., ocean turbine MCM/PHM).

The system uses vehicles themselves, equipped with simple inexpensive devices, as gatherers and distributors of information without the need for costly road infrastructure such as sensors, cameras or external communication equipment. Additionally, we present a flexible simulation and visualization framework we designed and developed to validate our system by showing its effectiveness in multiple scenarios and to aid in the research and development of this and future VANET applications.

This thesis proposes a systematic evaluation of the usefulness of incorporating knowledge about the geometric context of a scene into a baseline object detection algorithm based on local features. This research extends publicly available MATLABRª implementations of leading algorithms in the field and integrates them in a coherent and extensible way. Experiments are presented to compare the performance and accuracy between baseline and context-based detectors, using images from the recently published SUN09 dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that adding contextual information about the geometry of the scene improves the detector performance over the baseline case in 50% of the tested cases.

To prolong the operating lifetime of networks, energy efficiency is indicated as a critical issue and energy-efficient resource allocation designs have been extensively developed. We investigated energy-efficient schemes that prolong network operating lifetime in wireless sensor networks and in wireless relay networks. In Chapter 2, the energy-efficient resource allocation that minimizes a general cost function of average user powers for small- or medium-scale wireless sensor networks, where the simple time-division multiple-access (TDMA) is adopted as the multiple access scheme. A class of Ç-fair cost-functions is derived to balance the tradeoff between efficiency and fairness in energy-efficient designs. Based on such cost functions, optimal channel-adaptive resource allocation schemes are developed for both single-hop and multi-hop TDMA sensor networks. In Chapter 3, optimal power control methods to balance the tradeoff between energy efficiency and fairness for wireless cooperative networks are developed. It is important to maximize power efficiency by minimizing power consumption for a given quality of service, such as the data rate; it is also equally important to evenly or fairly distribute power consumption to all nodes to maximize the network life. The optimal power control policy proposed is derived in a quasi-closed form by solving a convex optimization problem with a properly chosen cost-function. To further optimize a wireless relay network performance, an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based multi-user wireless relay network is considered in Chapter 4., In the OFDM approach, each subcarrier is dynamically assigned to a source- destination link, and several relays assist communication between pairs of source-destination over their assigned subcarriers. Using a class of Ç-fair cost-functions to balance the tradeoff between energy efficiency and fairness, jointly with optimal subcarrier and power allocation schemes at the relays. Relevant algorithms are derived in quasi-closed form. Lastly, the proposed energy-efficient schemes are summarized and future work is discussed in Chapter 5.

Maintenance on ocean-based machinery can be very costly. To avoid unnecessary maintenance it is necessary to monitor the condition of each machine in order to predict problems. This kind of prognostic health monitoring (PHM) requires a condition-based maintenance (CBM) system that supports diagnostic and prognostic analysis of large amounts of data. Research in this field led to the creation of ISO13374 and the development of a standard open-architecture for machine condition monitoring. This thesis explores an implementation of such a system for ocean-based machinery using this framework and current open-standard technologies.

Independent component analysis (ICA) is one such method that effectively resolves static linear combinations of independent non-Gaussian distributions. We propose a method that can track variations in the mixing system by seeking a compromise between adaptive and block methods by using mini-batches. The resulting permutation indeterminacy is resolved based on the correlation continuity principle. Methods employing higher order cumulants in the separation criterion are susceptible to outliers in the finite sample case. We propose a robust method based on low-order non-integer moments by exploiting the Laplacian model of speech signals. We study separation methods for even (over)-determined linear convolutive mixtures in the frequency domain based on joint diagonalization of matrices employing time-varying second order statistics. We investigate the sources affecting the sensitivity of the solution under the finite sample case such as the set size, overlap amount and cross-spectrum estimation methods.

Show moreWith augmenting security concerns and decreasing costs of surveillance and computing equipment, research on automated systems for object detection has been increasing, but the majority of the studies focus their attention on sequences where high resolution objects are present. The main objective of this work is the detection and extraction of information of low resolution objects (e.g. objects that are so far away from the camera that they occupy only tens of pixels) in order to provide a base for higher level information operations such as classification and behavioral analysis. The system proposed is composed of four stages (preprocessing, background modeling, information extraction, and post processing) and uses context based region of importance selection, histogram equalization, background subtraction and morphological filtering techniques. The result is a system capable of detecting and tracking low resolution objects in a controlled background scene which can be a base for systems with higher complexity.

Machine Condition Monitoring (MCM) / Prognostic Health Monitoring (PHM) systems allow for self-checking and automated fault detection, and are integral in the construction of a highly reliable ocean turbine. MCM/PHM systems enable real time health assessment, prognostics and advisory generation by interpreting data from sensors installed on the machine being monitored. To effectively utilize sensor readings for determining the health of individual components, macro-components and the overall system, these measurements must somehow be combined or integrated to form a holistic picture. The process used to perform this combination is called data fusion. Data mining and machine learning techniques allow for the analysis of these sensor signals, any maintenance history and other available information (like expert knowledge) to automate decision making and other such processes within MCM/PHM systems. ... This dissertation proposes an MCM/PHM software architecture employing those techniques which were determined from the experiments to be ideal for this application. Our work also offers a data fusion framework applicable to ocean machinery MCM/PHM. Finally, it presents a software tool for monitoring ocean turbines and other submerged vessels, implemented according to industry standards.

The goal of this study thereof is to emphasize efforts to establish the associated forecasting and, the envisioned tasks thereof include : (i) Reviewing the technoeconomic considerations prevailing in telecommunication (telco) service industry and their implicating features; (ii) studying relevant aspects of underlying complex system evolution (akin to biological systems), (iii) pursuant co-evolution modeling of competitive business structures using dichotomous (flip-flop) states as seen in predator evolutions ; (iv) conceiving a novel algorithm based on information-theoretic principles toward technoeconomic forecasting on the basis of modified Fisher-Kaysen model consistent with proportional fairness concept of comsumers' willingness-to-pay, and (v) evaluating forecast needs on inter-office facility based congestion sensitive traffics encountered. Commensurate with the topics indicated above, necessary algorithms, analytical derivations and compatible models are proposed. Relevant computational exercises are performed with MatLab[TM] using data gathered from open-literature on the service profiles of telecommunication companies (telco); and ad hoc model verifications are performed on the results. Lastly, discussions and inferences are made with open-questions identified for further research.

Show moreIn recent years, a plethora of wireless applications such as Bluetooth and Ultra-wide band (UWB) radio have emerged. This drastic increase has overly congested the spectrum. So, new networks such as cognitive radios that can solve the spectrum congestion have emerged. But in such networks, interference is introduced at the physical layer. We study and develop an interference model capable of capturing the intrinsic characteristics of the coexistence of such wireless applications. We investigate the effect of interference using device isolation probability or outage probability in presence Rayleigh and Nakagami-m fading at the physical layer and the impact of lognormal shadowing. We assume that the devices are either deterministically placed or randomly distributed according to a Poisson point process. We derive explicit expressions for the isolation probability and outage probability that give insight into how these channel impairments affect communication in these applications. We use computer simulations to validate our analytical results.

Large amount of video in surveillance and security requires systems capable to processing video to automatically detect and recognize events to alleviate the load on humans and enable preventive actions when events are detected. The main objective of this work is the analysis of computer vision techniques and algorithms used to perform automatic detection of events in video sequences. This thesis presents a surveillance system based on optical flow and background subtraction concepts to detect events based on a motion analysis, using an event probability zone definition. Advantages, limitations, capabilities and possible solution alternatives are also discussed. The result is a system capable of detecting events of objects moving in opposing direction to a predefined condition or running in the scene, with precision greater than 50% and recall greater than 80%.

Their focus is the research and development of open-ocean current systems and associated infrastructure needed to development and testing prototypes. The generation of power is achieved by using a specialized electric generator with a rotor called a turbine. As with all machines, the turbines will need maintenance and replacement as they near the end of their lifecycle. This prognostic health monitoring (PHM) requires data to be collected, stored, and analyzed in order to maximize the lifespan, reduce downtime and predict when failure is eminent. This thesis explores the use of a data gateway which will separate high level software with low level hardware including sensors and actuators. The gateway will v standardize and store the data collected from various sensors with different speeds, formats, and interfaces allowing an easy and uniform transition to a database system for analysis.
