The magnitude of immune responses to vaccination is a critical factor in determining protection from diseases. We reported that nicotine disrupts the properties of DCs that are pivotal in the initiation of immune response to vaccines. Here we investigated whether TLR agonist(s) could overcome the effects of nicotine on human DC and DC-NK cross-talk essential for effector T cell generation. nicDC, nicDC-NK, and nicDC-NK-T cultures exposed to TLR agonists were evaluated for expression of...

We reported that nicotine disrupts the properties of DCs that are pivotal in the initiation of immune response to vaccines. Here we investigated whether TLR agonist(s) could overcome the effects of nicotine on human DC and DC-NK cross-talk essential for effector T cell generation. nicDC, nicDC-NK, and nicDC-NK-T cultures exposed to TLR agonists were evaluated for expression of costimulatory molecules, cytokines, and intracellular cytokine IFN-g using ELISA and flow cytometry. Our data shows that among the TLR agonists, TLR3 and TLR8/7 synergistically optimized nicDC maturation co-cultured NK cell activation. Importantly, similar to DC-NK, nicDC-NK treated with TLR3 and TLR8/7 and co-cultured with naïve T cells promoted a comparable number of effector T cells. Our data suggest that the addition of appropriate TLR agonist(s) to vaccine formulation could potentially improve the smokers’ immune response to vaccination.

CCRCs are challenged to provide therapies that enhance ability to carry out activities of daily living for these residents. The purpose of this project is to identify effective therapies. The Stinger Action research model is being used to guide the project. Students have met with a community representative who has focused attention on falls, behavioral problems and pharmacological management of dementia and Parkinson’s disease. An exhaustive literature search has been undertaken to provide evidence. There are pharmacological approaches to manage symptoms. However, there is less evidence supporting non-pharmacological approaches addressing behavioral problems and falls. Models of CCRC care are evolving and integration of person- centered non-pharmacological, evidence-based approaches will be critical and best developed with resident input.

Participants include 26 fourth graders at Park Lakes Elementary. A pretest will be given, 5 lessons taught, and then a posttest. Pretest and posttest scores will be analyzed, to track learning gains and the validity of explicitly teaching vocabulary to increase comprehension. All 26 students are expected to earn a higher score on the posttest, compared to the pretest. After result analyzation, I will report concluding results. My intent is to evaluate this technique with the hope that it will be an effective teaching strategy that will improve low expectancy student scores on the ELA area of the Florida Standardized Assessments.

Even though billions of dollars are being raised to aid in cancer research in the U.S. alone, it is not often you hear about new advancements that change the landscape. This project explores people’s attitudes towards cancer and its cure based on demographics such as age.

Conopressins are conopeptides that target vasopressin/oxytocin receptors in vascular smooth muscle cells that are found within blood vessels. The crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP) is a homologous peptide found in crustaceans and has been shown to behave as a cardioaccelerator in a homologous system. This study describes the effects of CCAP in Drosophila larvae. We find that CCAP has an inotropic effect by causing a change in the contraction of blood vessels. We further investigate the effects of another possibly cardioactive conopeptide, γ-conopressin-vil, in Drosophila larvae. Elucidating the effects of conopetides in Drosophila larvae may translate to cardioactive therapeutic uses in mammalian systems.

In 2014, the motion for covering additional immigrants under the act was blocked by the courts, and as of 2018, President Trump plans on disbanding DACA as well as the DREAM act, changing the lives of millions who have shaped America. For this research, I conducted a literature review that examines the benefits and limitations of DACA, the emotional and mental effects of being an “illegal” immigrant, and the political views of members of the current U.S. administration that will threaten the lives of many. Finally, I propose a possible research project to further explore this issue.

Show moreOften, in the traditional adversarial court system, prosecutors work to secure a conviction of drug offenders whereas the defense seeks dismissal of the charges or a less punishable sentence. The judge acts as a neutral entity hearing testimony and sustaining or overruling arguments made by opposing sides. In drug courts, which is a type of non-adversarial problem-solving court, these members of the courtroom work group work together to enhance the likelihood of drug offenders reducing their substance abuse and future criminal activity. With the growing incarceration rate in the United States, some states have opted to use drug courts as a way to divert offenders away from prisons. In this poster, I present data collected via one drug court observation and film notes discussing the roles, power and ethical standards of drug court officials and how they differ from the traditional adversarial system.

The study employed a three-arm cluster-randomized, longitudinal design. Sites were randomly assigned 1:1:1 to chair yoga, chair-based exercise, or music intervention. Twenty-seven participants completed 24 sessions in 12 weeks. We administered evaluation measures at baseline, midline (6 weeks), and post intervention (12 weeks). Repeated-measures analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted to examine group differences at the collection points, controlling for baseline variability (i.e., gender, age, race/ethnicity) in outcomes.

Show moreThe N-acyltransferase enzyme (NAT) is responsible for synthesizing N-acyl-phospatidylethanolamines which is the first step in the synthesis of N-acylethanolamines, an important class of lipids that are used by the endocannabinoid system as signaling molecules. A calcium dependent NAT enzyme has been characterized biochemically but has not been cloned. The purpose of this study was to identify NAT enzyme in Caenorhabditis elegans. The strain MGL107 overproduces NAEs and as a result exhibits delayed growth. We have found that 10 of 35 genes with N-acyltransferase activity are able to restore growth of MGL107. Interestingly, acl-10, acl-12, and acl-13 also showed increased mRNA levels in a strain with reduced NAEs, possibly indicating a compensatory mechanism. These data suggests that these three genes could potentially code for the calcium dependent NAT and should be further analyzed biochemically.

Chronic victimization by peers sometimes fosters aggression in children (Dodge, 2011; Hodges & Perry, 1999). Recent data suggest that cross-gender victimization is more common in girls during middle childhood (Benbenishty, & Astor, 2005). That is, girls are picked on by boys at a proportionally higher rate than boys are picked on by girls. Recent data suggest that cross-gender victimization is more common in girls during middle childhood (Benbenishty, & Astor, 2005). That is, girls are picked on by boys at a proportionally higher rate than boys are picked on by girls. However, the possibility that enduring cognitive structures moderate effects of victimization on aggression—by serving as processing filters through which children perceive, interpret, and respond to the adverse experiences—remains unexplored. In this study, we assessed whether victimization experiences at the hands of the other sex increased aggression over the school year. We measured peer-nominated aggression toward the other sex and victimization by the other sex in 195 children (94 girls, 101 boys; M age 10.1 years). We also examined self-reported inhibition of emotions as a possible moderator. Results suggest that aggression did not increase over time if boys were victimized by other boys, but the more that boys were victimized by girls, the more their aggression increased girls’ aggression was unaffected by victimization by peers of either sex as a main effect. However, inhibition of emotions moderated the effect of victimization on aggression in both sexes. Thus, the experience of being victimized by the other sex led to an increase in aggression toward the other sex only when inhibition of emotions was high, rather than low. These findings highlight the importance of examining interactive models that contribute to aggression in children.

Show moreHuman Trafficking is the trade of humans for the purpose of sexual slavery, forced labor, or commercial sexual exploitation. It is an ever-growing issue with more slaves now than at any other point in history, totaling to roughly 27 million victims of the Human Trafficking Slave Trade. More specifically, Miami, Florida is the third largest site for human trafficking in the United States. By studying human behavior and targeting portals for slave trade, the redesigned objects will be placed in airports and suspected establishments in our environment. The irony created by the graphics, specifically on site, will capture attention and stir a public concern about human trafficking. Furthermore, it will also provide the audience with the means to take action. Our objective of this research is to find creative solutions through the redesigning of common items, such as traffic signs, and placing them in the environment to raise public awareness.

The audience profile will inform the campaign problem, campaign objectives, and message strategy by revealing brand concept elements and message tactics to convey. Secondary research using FAU Library’s business databases has revealed marketplace, environmental, competitive conditions, and the audience’s demographic, geographic, generational, and psychographic characteristics. This basic profile will be enriched by survey research using items extracted from reliable and valid marketing scales. Motives, benefits, product perceptions and preferences, relative performance, lifestyle relevance, hedonistic pleasure, and decision making strategies will be subjected to measurement. Advertisements will be based on the audience profile, persuasion theory, and creative thinking techniques.
