However, there are some similarities that can be seen between current and ancestral times in relation to societal perception, especially in relation to parental investment theory. Using an OkCupid dataset of 2620 questions, 166 were selected in order to evaluate how much of an influence societal perception ( the influence of family and friends, substance use, education, stigma, religion, appearance, and morals) has on searching for a romantic partner. The data was evaluated in four separate stages: Initially just 100 cases were examined to reduce computational burden, then an additional 2000 were used to look at the structure of key variables. Of the remaining cases, 60% were used to develop a prediction model and 40% to test this model. It was found that women tended to be more selective on six of the seven scales that were measured, this selectiveness can be attributed to parental investment theory. significant influence in revolutionary politics through agricultural and industrial collectivization, communes, militia resistance, and participation in government. Many historians have explained anarchism through the lens of ideology, a doctrine based upon a structure of authority. This thesis, however, explains anarchist power and unity during the Spanish Civil War as a matter of identity, as a meaningful sense of self. Spanish anarchists defined themselves through the process of negation – the act of defining who you are by defining what you are not – by their opposition to authority, to religion, to feudalism, to capitalism and fascism, to communism, and to anarchism. The anarchists also affirmed who they were as individuals and as communities through three values: yearning for absolute freedom, the capacity for absolute fraternity removed from centralized authority, and absolute egalitarianism – the unreserved equality of all individuals.

Where there is an accident, fatal or minor, the individual is punished for driving while intoxicated. While many theorists believe that it is inappropriate to punish one who has a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over the legal limit of .08%, I propose that regardless of the individual harming or not harming another, the person who is driving while intoxicated should face punishment. It should not matter if the driver did not show any signs of impairment or if they hurt anyone else while driving. Any person that goes behind the wheel impaired is at greater risk for hurting themselves or someone else at that time.

Trainhopping is still widely practiced, however modern day trainhopping culture has not received appropriate scholarly attention as a specific subculture. To understand the choices and motivations of members of this subculture, I undertook an ethnographic project wherein I interviewed trainhoppers, in addition to analyzing the historical precedent set for contemporary trainhopping practice. Through my research I analyze the drive to live within a state of liminality in relation to society, where an individual is situated between the poles of interaction with predominant society and marginal society. This research will advance our understanding of self-identification with a liminal group within the context of a contemporary subculture.

Syngap1 regulates a critical period during development by coordinating dendrite elongation and synaptic maturation/plasticity in forebrain areas. This project aims to better understand how disruption of Syngap1 during developmental critical periods impact circuit assembly and brain function. To understand how impaired circuit assembly may lead to neural dysfunction, whole-brain mapping of neural activation in Syngap1 mutants was performed. This study aims to reveal how variants linked to genetically defined human brain disorders effect neural circuit structure and function at the mesoscale.

In doing so, one can also address the question of how psychological is women’s studies (and vice versa).

Section 4(b) of the VRA required that states with a previous history of voter suppression obtain federal preclearance before enacting any new voting laws. In 2013, the Supreme Court held in Shelby County v. Holder that the coverage formula in section 4(b) was unconstitutional. I argue that Shelby County has opened the door to numerous recent efforts to restrict voting. While these restrictions have been justified to counter illegal voting, I argue that the removal of preclearance has led to restrictions on voting that do not facilitate the integrity of voting, but ‘suppress voting,’ and have a disparate impact on minorities.

References were pulled from select chapters of two different handbooks, the forthcoming SAGE Handbook of Personality and Individual Differences and the Oxford Handbook of Organizational Psychology, in order to create a network structure that graphically illustrated the connections between the authors and their specific topics. This structure was then compared to a pre-prepared network that was created by hand of the expectations for what the network should look like based solely on the chapter readings. The software programs of R and Gephi were used for the creation of these network structures. From this research, the importance of these methods, namely, the creation a detailed map of a scientific field, was deduced and expanded upon.

With oceans having much more phylogenetic diversity than terrestrial areas, it is incredibly important that our oceans, intracoastal waterways, and lagoons are protected. I believe that one major way to bring awareness to such a key part of our ecosystems is through scientific illustrations. The power of scientific illustrations is that it makes some species a reality to people that would not otherwise see them, as not every person has the opportunity to go dive, or snorkel, and see the beauty of our Treasure Coast ecosystems. Human beings are influenced and inspired through visual stimulation—I have hopes that by visually seeing the beauty of life around them, the people that live in these areas, and people of the world, will feel more prompted to protect our significantly essential waterways.

In aquatic environments, it is possible to extract eDNA from water samples, allowing for a variety of genetic tests to be performed, with great value in the fields of endangered species protection, invasive species control, and fisheries management among others. eDNA can persist in freshwater environments for many hours and can be attributed to fish up to one kilometer upstream from the collection site. However, water conditions in marine environments may reduce the survivability of eDNA. I evaluated the reliability eDNA analysis in the marine environment by analyzing water samples taken immediately before a survey of the common snook, Centropomus undecimalis, an important game fish. The eDNA sampling method was successful at detecting snook presence in the Indian River Lagoon, although with some practical limitations.

Alternatively, intranasal administration allows the delivery of these molecules to the brain by bypassing the BBB. To improve intranasal delivery to the brain, novel cyclic opioid peptides DADLE-OL I and II were created as a proof-of-concept using a novel strategy that involved grafting a bioactive sequence into the scaffold of a cyclic peptide. DADLE was grafted into the scaffold of a naturally occurring cyclic peptide, odorranalectin, which binds to carbohydrates expressed on the olfactory nerves. The PerkinElmer AlphaScreen cAMP Assay was used to study the structure-activity relationship (SAR) of DADLE-OL I and II. My research project was focused on optimization of the AlphaScreen cAMP assay to elucidate the SAR of novel cyclic peptide opioid ligands. This study provided valuable structure-activity information for further structural modification of cyclic peptide opioid ligands and the discovery of novel pain medications.

Show moreSeveral studies reveal a connection between a victim’s skin color and the probability that their aggressor will receive the death penalty. Other studies conclude that a defendant’s race will be a factor in determining whether or not they are sentenced to capital punishment. Despite the evident racial discrimination that plagues capital cases, Ernest van den Haag contends that “unequal justice is still justice” and that if someone is guilty of a capital offense, they don’t deserve any less punishment simply because the death penalty is applied disproportionately based on race. I argue, against van den Haag, that unequal justice violates defendants’ rights to due process. Even if a defendant is guilty, justice demands a fair system that protects defendants from systemic injustice and treats all victims and defendants equally.

Show more3-dimensional (3-D) models made from video recordings are a relatively novel method for mapping and quantifying surface areas of objects. Photos extracted from video and aligned in sequence allow an increase of usable information when compared to discrete photos. The applications of 3-D videogrammetry in this thesis are extremely useful in the tracking of surface areas of living, healthy coral tissue on stony mounding or bouldering corals on reefs. However, during 3-D model generation, errors occasionally develop such as visual distortions or failure to scale accurately. Therefore, an analysis of the accuracy of a 3-D photogrammetry process was conducted. A 3-D printed “coral” and several geometric objects were recorded underwater using a previously used method known as the “Lawnmower” with the addition of 45- and 90-degree angle videos. Successful generation of the models, satisfactory visual quality, and comparison of expected surface area and known surface areas were all used to assess the accuracy of this Lawnmower technique as well as with the addition of angled video coverage.

The objective of this research was to investigate habitat use of smaller macroinvertebrates on restored oyster reefs. Small-scale (approx. 10 cm3) cage (bagged shell) and string (hanging shell) oyster cultch units were deployed on two restored oyster reefs in the Loxahatchee River Estuary for one year. Fauna inhabiting the units were monitored monthly, identified to the lowest practical taxonomic level, and categorized into functional groups based on feeding mode, living position, and mobility. Results showed similar abundance, richness, and diversity of functional groups in cage and string units. These findings suggest that even small-scale oyster reef restorations, such as individual ‘vertical oyster gardens’ (i.e. string units), add valuable habitat for smaller organisms. This research provides additional options for small-scale restoration efforts.

Eight horses, paired by gender, will be randomly assigned to be either clicker trained or trained using praise and touch as a reward. A different task will be assigned each week for four consecutive weeks to each group. For each task, I will record the number of correct responses within a given time or length of time taken to complete the task correctly, depending on the task. I predict that the clicker-trained horses would learn faster, be more calm and confident, and look forward to training sessions. In order to better understand how much marine debris is impacting one of the local beaches, this study uses data from Loggerhead Marinelife Center, who have been conducting monthly beach clean-ups since December 2016. When sorting the debris items, each one was sorted into one of eighteen categories. In analyzing the findings, it has been concluded that, out of 3204.52 lbs. of debris, foam pieces account for 29%, while plastic pieces account for 27%. The results of this study can contribute to developing preventative measures that focus on the main source of the issue. This research is ongoing as Loggerhead Marinelife still hosts monthly beach clean-ups.

Show moreThe twentieth century mathematician and philosopher, Alfred North Whitehead, conceived the ideal education to be an adventure of the human spirit whereby the manifold aspects of the individual’s capacities are explored and developed. It’s not clear how much mathematics, viewed as a dry mechanical activity consisting of mere technical calculation, could contribute to education so conceived. Yet Whitehead considered mathematical training crucial for developing mental capacity in its abstract, general, and particular operations. Mathematical activity by its very nature promotes the modes of engagement that constitute the ideal education. Understanding is best facilitated by an education where the particular and general find their meaning as they condition each other, where specialization and synoptic awareness are equally inhabited. Without this our technical work is insignificant and our high abstractions empty. Where uncertainty and aimlessness reign, we must look to education to cultivate and inspire the integrity of life lived creatively.
