In the 1950s, a group of African-American artists based around Ft. Pierce, Florida, began selling their landscapes of palm hammocks, colorful sunsets, and Evergladian fauna to tourists traveling south to the Sunshine State. Mass-produced in the artists' backyards, these subtropic landscapes found their way into Florida's motels, hotels, banks, and office buildings as well as private homes. Mass-produced in the artists' backyards, these subtropic landscapes found their way into Florida's motels, hotels, banks, and office buildings as well as private homes. The regional art form fell out of favor until the mid-1990s when an art aficionado coined the name "Highwaymen." Since then a resurgence of interest has brought new fame to the surviving members of the group. Along with this modern interest in the Highwaymen comes another facet of the subject : Several Highwaymen have sons and daughters who paint. Do the children paint like their parents? Are the children riding on the coattails of their parents or have they developed their own original style? Is the legacy of the Highwaymen continued in their progeny?

The rapid increase of urban growth is a major issue for many regions around the world, which result in astounding loss in farmlands and increase in population densities. It important that urban growth be monitored as it will aid the local government in implementing the appropriate measures for a growing population. The city of Boca Raton, Florida, is the case study for this research. A multi-temporal analysis is done of five Landsat satellite images over a thirty year time period, 1973-2002....

It important that urban growth be monitored as it will aid the local government in implementing the appropriate measures for a growing population. The city of Boca Raton, Florida, is the case study for this research. A multi-temporal analysis is done of five Landsat satellite images over a thirty year time period, 1973-2002. Textural analysis was performed on each of the images, to delineate the urban areas. Three by-products resulted from the textural analysis: time series tinted overlays, dasymetric mapping and a series of animated maps, showing the movement of growth across the landscape through time. All the resulting products of the time series analysis were used to show the magnitude and direction of growth over time.

The time and place in which these events occur, South Florida 1979-1989, lends itself to exploring themes such as race, class, addiction, the fragmentation of community, and the effects of these issues on the families that live there. Stylistically, the story makes three significant shifts in order to foreground each decade's dissimilarity. These shifts intentionally disrupt reader expectation while a coherent narrative thread unifies the work, rendering it fragmented yet complete.

They began the century as subsistence based people with few rights to the land, and they ended the century with substantial political power and economically prosperous enterprises while maintaining their tribal status and identity as Seminoles. In the twentieth century, the Seminoles confirmed their historical role from the nineteenth century as having never been defeated, but rather than achieving this image through war acts, as they did in the nineteenth century, they created a new role as being culturally and economically indomitable. This aspect of Seminole history has been largely ignored in the narrative of Florida's history.
