A previously undescribed skin abnormality, which we refer to as “tiger stripes,” has been identified in Indian River Lagoon bottlenose dolphins through photo-identification surveys. The condition presents as parallel stripes on the ventral and lateral aspects on the torso of the dolphin with varying length and depth. Show moreA previously undescribed skin abnormality, which we refer to as “tiger stripes,” has been identified in Indian River Lagoon bottlenose dolphins through photo-identification surveys. The condition presents as parallel stripes on the ventral and lateral aspects on the torso of the dolphin with varying length and depth. The condition may be indicative of rapid weight loss, similar to human "stretch marks”, debilitating illnesses resulting in emaciation or a result of starvation due to lack of prey. Goals of this study were to determine if tiger stripes are: (1) a marker of rapid weight loss, (2) more prevalent in post-partum females, and to (3) examine the spatial and temporal distribution in the IRL. Preliminary findings indicate that tiger striping is a useful marker suggestive of rapid weight loss. The next phase of research is to determine if the condition can be utilized as a pre-mortem marker of emaciation in IRL dolphins.

Show morePeptides and proteins with photochemical sensors are valuable tools when analyzing biochemical processes and peptide properties. Recent work on fluorescent α-amino acids (FlAAs) proved extremely useful in studying protein folding, conformational changes and reactivity. When fluorescent tags are appropriately attached to proteins they allow for the detection of their environment and changes therein. Research on the topic of site-specific fluorescent molecules is in its early stages. Several challenges face the topic of selectively excitable fluorescent probes. These include limits on the size and lifetime of synthesized proteins and enzymes, attaching the tag at the target location on a peptide chain which will take advantage of the photochemical properties of the tag, and developing molecules that will readily exhibit environment-sensitive fluorescence.

In my thesis research, I examined correlations between 2D:4D ratio and the MM and MS of college students and compared the results to previous geriatric studies in order to evaluate 2D:4D measurement as a supplementary tool for understanding factors associated with muscularity. I evaluated college students using a scanning bed and calipers to determine digit ratio. I then measured calf-circumference, MM using bioimpedence technology and MS using a dynamometer for grip strength.

Habitat fragmentation has led to a decline in populations within southeastern ranges. Haemogregarina (intracellular parasites) have been identified in the blood of gopher tortoises, possibly due to the lack of prescribed fires which are known to kill ticks. However, little is known about their health significance. Two study sites, Blazing Star Preserve (BSP), and Pine Jog Preserve (PJP), differ in their management. The goal of this study is: (1) determine, if any, haemogregarina parasitemia levels of the gopher tortoise population in each site and (2) detect any additional hemoparasite species. We hypothesize that paristemia will be higher in BSP due to increased overcrowding and lack of prescribed fires. This study will benefit current conservation and management practices for gopher tortoises and provide a baseline study for intracellular parasites.

These habitat disturbances commonly favor invasive species such as the red fire ant (Solenopsis invicta). The red fire ant has been detected on aprons of gopher tortoise burrows at the FAU preserve and we would like to evaluate whether the distribution of red fire ants overlaps with that of the tortoises burrows. Ant distribution was accessed at the FAU preserve by running 10 random 100m transect lines and placing sardine baits at every 20m interval. Preliminary data suggests that red fire ants were abundant in 70% of the transects; however, we were unable to establish a direct correlation between the distribution of gopher tortoise burrows and that of red fire ants. The ants were tentatively identified to subfamilies and further identification will be performed.

Previous studies have found differences in BFI dimensions of Spanish-English bilinguals. We asked if Spanish-English bilinguals described themselves differently when answering in different languages. The present study investigated how Spanish-English bilinguals are classified when answering the BFI in both languages. In a cross-linguistic design, we assessed a sample of Spanish-English bilinguals. We hypothesized that we would find that bilinguals would score significantly different in both languages in the dimensions of extraversion and conscientiousness, with English scores being expected to be significantly higher than Spanish scores. Results revealed significantly different scores in Spanish and English in all five dimensions of the BFI. These results emphasize the issue of language in psychological evaluations, with the possibility of language dependence skewing the results for bilingual patients.

Show moreThe exotic apple snail Pomacea maculata appears to be gradually extending its range and increasing its density through much of south Florida. As a consequence, there is increasing interest in understanding its life history. One difficulty encountered in studying P. maculata is that it lays large, multilayered clutches of very small eggs that are impossible to count without disaggregating the egg mass; which results in the loss of viability. Using a previously described dis-aggregation technique, we weighed, dis-aggregated, photographed, and counted 70 egg masses of P. maculata collected from various locations in Lake Okeechobee. Using the resulting mass and egg numbers we developed an algorithm that reliably relates clutch mass to the number of eggs in a clutch, allowing the estimation of the number of eggs in a clutch without impacting the eggs’ viability and paving the way for investigations into studies on fecundity, hatching rate, etc.

A misuse pattern describes how a misuse is performed from the point of view of the attacker. It defines the environment where the attack is performed, countermeasures to stop it, and provides forensic information in order to trace the attack once it happens.

Regulatory agencies need simple test for ARI to monitor environmental quality. This study is first to measure resistance in a consortium of bacteria, not pure cultures. Our rapid method – “In-the-zone” (ITZ) employs a) the size of zones of inhibition b) identity of bacteria in the zone c) number of resistant clones within zones of inhibition and d) type of antibiotic to compute ARI. Results can be obtained within 24 - 48 hrs with very little effort. This semester, we repeated the test and validated the weighting of various parameters. The ITZ assay yield consistent and reproducible data on zones of inhibition of bacteria community. The diameter of inhibition zones was the most important parameter distinguishing resistomes of varying ARI. Landfill, manured garden, and waste plant samples scored highest in antibiotic resistance index compared to beach sand.

This current is strongest at the sea surface and decreases in strength with depth such that the individual rotor blades on ocean current turbines (OCT) deployed to harness this resource will operate in stronger currents when positioned vertically upwards than when vertically downwards. This current shear will induce cyclic loadings on the rotor blades unless active control is used to reduce these load variations. A direct adaptive individual blade pitch controller is implemented into a numerical model simulating an OCT operating in the Gulf Stream. The adaptive controller is analyzed with the OCT simulated in both stationary and moored configurations. The results concluded that the IBP controller reduced the amplitude of the loads in the stationary and moored simulations by 91.18% and 92.3%, respectively.

Show moreIn order to remember an event, one must remember the participants in the event, the actions that are performed, and which people performed which actions. Often people make binding errors in memory in which they remember the people and the actions, but they incorrectly remember one person as the person who performed an action that was actually performed by someone else. Half of the participants in our study saw a series of actions with each action performed by one of two actors. The other half of the participants saw each action performed by a different actor. We found that older adults were more likely to make binding errors than were younger adults. Younger adults were equally likely to make binding errors in the two conditions. Older adults, however, made many fewer binding errors when they saw only two actors during encoding than when they saw many actors during encoding.

In-stream hydrokinetic energy, electricity production from moving currents without the use of dams, has potential for significant power production with technically feasible US electricity production estimated at 14 GW from rivers, 50 GW from tides, and 19 GW from ocean currents; which is equivalent to approximately 17% of 2011 US power production. This work focuses on improving the power production from in-stream hydrokinetic turbines using adaptive torque control, and quantifies increased energy production by comparisons with standard fixed-gain torque control. This research uses numerical modeling to acquire power production estimates under simulated conditions. With these results we can quantify potential energy gains for three representative in-stream hydrokinetic rotor designs.

The information gathered from our focus group suggests that durability and comfort are the main factors when making a purchase. Competitors like Converse and Nike use their market share to persuade their buyers to pay a premium price while Vans focus on durability and the lifestyle the shoes brings to the consumers. Our secondary research revealed that millennials are considered the least conservative generation, which implies the rash nature of our target market. With the large growth rate of millennials, their preference pool is strongly influenced by the new wave. In regards to rebranding, vans began using “off the wall” to distance themselves from primarily skating to athleisure wear. Vans are mostly worn in cities with warmer climates to maximize comfort and a feeling of relaxation throughout the day.

Show moreProduct design, a product’s outward appearance, associates with successful innovation when the design triggers buyers to develop positive impressions. The project assessed impressions of forty respondents to four distinctive hoverboard designs: 1) a prototypical design, 2) an ornate design, 3) an atypical design, and 4) a radical design. The original research extended extant research into design impressions of functionality, aesthetics, and symbolism to add an assessment of ergonomic impressions. The systematic research method entailed a literature review, qualitative research, manipulation check, questionnaire pretest, convenience sample, and Chi-Square method enabling inferences with 90% confidence. A consent form and adherence to FAU’s academic integrity provided an ethical foundation. Results suggest that designers of hoverboards conform to the prototypical design to increase positive functional impressions, avoid ornate designs, and consider buyers’ skill level and self-expression when developing atypical designs due to respondents’ negative impressions of safety risks and ability to control a hoverboard.

In the developing world of global economies, people travel on a regular basis. Travelers tend to complain about the Hotel Industry and how it is manipulating prices for their clientele. AirB&B is disrupting the hotel industry by allowing private owners to rent out their properties for short periods of time with less risk. Currently, we have obtained data to prove that AirB&B is satisfying their customers better than regular hotel industry.
We will be comparing how does the number of bedrooms, the accommodations, the price and minimum stay requirements affecting the overall satisfaction of the traveling clientele. We will attempt to compare this data to how the room type effects the reviews and overall satisfaction to all other hotel ratings.

Show moreGopherus polyphemus (gopher tortoise) is a threatened keystone species whose burrows benefit over 350 species. Surveys conducted throughout 2010- 2015 at Florida Atlantic University Preserve (FAUP) have found an age gap of ten years and a lack of nests. To update the demographic survey and to examine the population’s reproduction and health, we conducted burrow and nest surveys from May to September 2016 and collected fecal samples to check for endo-parasites. Transects were used to locate burrows and measurements were taken to determine population structure. Wire-probing was used to locate nests and feces were tested for endo-parasites. From a total of 261 marked burrows and fecal sampling, results indicated a continuous age range, one nest, and presence of intestinal parasites. Future work will focus on health and reproductive behavior that will improve our understanding of the FAUP gopher tortoise population and may ultimately aid in future conservation methods.
