Despite these dismal circumstances, Tyler's book is quirky, offbeat and ultimately comic, due primarily to the unfailing tolerance and humor of the author herself. Lawrence Kasdan's 1988 film adaptation of Tyler's novel is thematically consistent with the book. Kasdan unerringly recognized the scenes naturally suited to dramatization, and in places he successfully transfers Tyler's dialogue directly to the screen with effective comic results. Throughout most of the film, however, the tone is melancholy and the overall effect is much heavier than the novel. Superb acting by William Hurt and Geena Davis help to give Kasdan's film depth and power.

The Maldon poet created finely interrelated philosophic and social commentary in his poem, playing the epic hero against the newer Christian martyr. He used both characterizations to create a picture of Byrhtnoth as a political martyr. With some understanding of the historical and religious perspectives of tenth century England, it is possible to begin to appreciate The Battle of Maldon and to understand its pivotal role in artistic evolution. The poet integrated disparate ideas to produce an Anglo-Saxon work of surprising complexity that has survived for one thousand years.

This research examines the commodification of tattooing in South Florida and the relationship between consumption and identity production. In efforts to express the self and exert control over the body, individuals adorn themselves. In the United States we are increasingly using tattoos as one form of self-expression. However, this expression is grounded in Western consumerist ideals. It is through consumption of the symbolic commodity of the tattoo that the individual expresses the self and asserts control over the body.

Title: A Content Analysis of State Political Party Newspapers.

The goal of the research was to attempt to discover the uses and goals of state political party newspapers. Five propositions were proposed which would accomplish this aim. Show moreThe history of the development of the party newspapers is reviewed in the first chapter. The goal of the research was to attempt to discover the uses and goals of state political party newspapers. Five propositions were proposed which would accomplish this aim. The first proposition was to discover the extent to which the state party paper is used to extend the publicity of the state chairman. The second proposition was to discover to what extent the party newspaper is used as a tool in finance and fund-raising appeals. The third proposition attempted to reveal to what extent the state paper is used to extend the publicity of the incumbent governor. Proposition IV sought to ascertain whether or not a party not holding the governor's office openly criticized the state opposition party, while the incumbent party merely spoke of its own accomplishments while neglecting the opposition. The fifth, and final, proposition attempted to ascertain whether less populous state Republican party papers were more apt to relate themselves to the national Republican party and administration. The research method of content analysis was discussed and the methodology used in this study was explained. The scores for nine content categories were compiled and the findings from a one-issue analysis of sixty-two papers confirmed Propositions I-IV. The fifth proposition was disproven. A time analysis of six selected papers was performed and these findings confirmed the findings of the one-issue analysis. Furthermore, this analysis proved the existence of patterns of column-inch space allocations in a state party newspaper.

Current projections for the near future show climate change producing grim outcomes for most habitable parts of the world. This thesis defends the argument that in order to adequately address the state of the environment, humanity must experience a shift in collective consciousness away from the current philosophical paradigm, and instead adopt a paradigm that enables a common mindset regarding the place of humans within the natural environment. Various forms of spiritual ecology are explored: deep ecology, biblical eco-theology, and eco-feminist theology. These positions are explored in order to introduce a framework necessary to achieve the collective shift in consciousness required to address environmental issues: a Spiritual Framework of Organic Oneness, which includes components of spiritual ecology and earth-centered religious traditions.

The novels examined present various methods James's characters utilize to elude the actual world. In The Tragic Muse, the line that separates mimetic art and actuality is nonexistent. Through imitation and performance characters create and represent what ought to be. Aesthetic immersion and imaginative constructs are opposed methods of escape in The Spoils of Poynton. The Ambassadors depicts a world where characters conspire to disguise the truth. Lambert Strether's imagination is stimulated by this milieu and takes flight. Similarly, the characters in The Wings of the Dove go to extreme lengths to realize their aesthetic visions. Ultimately, each character in these novels must deal with the sacrifices that are made when one chooses to exist in a world consisting solely of beauty and imagination.
