Through the use of innovative form, these essays thread together personal narratives and research to find language for complicated manifestations of loss. These essays experiment with structure and form to grapple with the illusive nature of memory, loss, and healing. The essays in this collection attempt to find healing and meaning through language and meditation. This collection is also an attempt at categorizing grief when normative societal ideas are challenged by complicated loss. This work serves as a call to action that there should be better recognition of uncommonly recognized manifestations of grief.

A modular recovery system which can be added to the WAM-V payload tray was designed, and based on a review of previous literature a CONOPS was developed for the launch and recovery process. The first phase of the CONOPS, which pertains to the position of the REMUS initially on the free surface prior to sling engagement is simulated using ANSYS AQWA. Preprocessing for the simulation involved simplification of the model in ANSYS SpaceClaim to achieve a proper mesh as well as theoretical calculations of the input parameters for wave environment and point masses etc. The simulation was evaluated by taking into consideration two wave environment scenarios: beam sea’s (-90 degrees) and head seas (0 degrees). The wave environment was based on a linear frequency range for the waves which considered wavelengths that correspond to half and double the length of the WAM-V 16’. The significance of the simulation is characterized through identifying the ideal direction and wave frequency range for recovery based on the RAOs of the two vehicles.

Show moreThe current study examined how viewing an event from different perspectives (eye-level and elevated) at both encoding and retrieval changes the recognition of that event. Specifically, participants were shown various manipulations to the scenarios that they witnessed at encoding. The primary focus of the study was the participants’ ability to identify old scenarios along with scenarios that had been manipulated through differences in character clothing, object placement, or temporal order of events, while still resembling the old scenario in every other way. No support was found to support the prediction that perspective at either encoding or retrieval had an effect on recognition of the scenario or the different manipulation types. An exploratory analysis revealed a trend towards significance for perspective at encoding. An eye-level perspective at encoding was more likely to result in a higher rejection rate for temporal manipulations.

Show moreProton Therapy, an effective cancer treatment, poses unintended consequences for patients and personnel due to secondary neutron production. This study investigates neutron attenuation in shielding materials like concrete using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations to optimize shielding requirements. Experimental limitations, such as detector sensitivity, energy range response, and spatial resolution, lead to inaccurate evaluations. MC simulations address that by modeling radiation transport and neutron interactions with shielding materials. The TOPAS-MC code simulated secondary neutrons generated by a 226.5 MeV energy proton beam on a 30 cm diameter tissue-equivalent target. The target was placed in a 200 cm spherical concrete shell with a 100 cm inner radius and 2.3 g/cm3 density. Energy deposition and particle fluence were scored in 20 radial points across 18 angular positions, and the mean value per particle was estimated. Neutron fluence to ambient dose equivalent conversion coefficients from ICRU Report No. 95 were used to calculate the total dose equivalent values, which were scaled based on distance and concrete shield thickness.

Show moreTau, a microtubule-associated protein, is involved in more than 20 different tauopathic disorders characterized by aberrant intracellular aggregation of tau in the brain. However, it is still unclear how this highly soluble tau protein aggregates inside the brain. Thus, understanding the mechanistic details of tau aggregation is critical for unraveling the underlying pathology of tauopathies and developing effective strategies to inhibit tau aggregation. Herein, we investigated the aggregation of a novel 20-residue model peptide, tau₂₉₈₋₃₁₇, derived from the key microtubule-binding domain of the full sequence tau. Our study demonstrates that tau₂₉₈₋₃₁₇ highly mimics full-length tau's physical and aggregation properties. The fibrillation of the peptide is strongly dependent on external factors. The presence of polyanionic heparin (Hep) significantly promotes the aggregation of this peptide to form amyloid fibrils. The Hep-induced aggregation is sensitive to the ionic strength of the solution, suggesting an important role of electrostatic interactions in the mechanism of Hep-mediated aggregation. In addition, two positively charged polysaccharides, chitosan (CHT) and its quaternary derivative N-trimethyl chitosan (TMC), effectively inhibit Hep-induced aggregation of tau₂₉₈₋₃₁₇ in a concentration-dependent manner. Attractive electrostatic interactions between the positively charged moieties in CHT/TMC and the negatively charged residues of Hep play a critical role in inhibiting Hep–peptide interactions and suppressing peptide aggregation.

Show morePile foundations are subjected to vertical loads and significantly higher lateral loads due to wind, seismic effects, ocean waves and currents, and floating ice sheets. Applied vertical load on a pile is resisted by the skin friction and base resistance. The base resistance is provided by the soil layer and skin friction develops at the soil-pile interface. The lateral load on the pile is resisted by the soil-pile interaction effect, which is dependent on the pile and soil parameters. Published literature shows that a properly designed Pile-to-Pile Cap (PTPC) connection will offer significant lateral resistance to the applied loads. The soil-pile system behavior is highly non-linear which requires a detailed study on the soil-structure interaction considering multi-layered soil strata and their properties. This Dissertation is divided into two parts: Evaluation of (A) the behavior and performance of PTPC connections, and (B) the load-displacement responses of a pile embedded in a multi-layered non-linear elastic soil strata subjected to static loads. A comprehensive literature review has been performed to study the factors affecting the PTPC connection performances and the load-displacement behavior of piles subjected to static lateral and axial loads considering soil-pile interactions. The objective of the study in Part A is to develop a PTPC connection design capable of producing adequate moment capacity of the pile by relying only on plain pile embedments without any special connection reinforcement details. The present study evaluates the local and global behavior of the PTPC connections with plain pile embedment through Finite Element Analyses (FEA).

A survey, which was based upon the Theory of Bureaucratic Caring and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s (CIHR) knowledge-to-action (KTA) cycle, and incorporated elements of the Complementary and Integrative Health Assessment for Practitioners (CIAHP) and the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Beliefs Inventory (CAMBI), was created to assess the CIC educational needs of APRNs employed in primary care/outpatient settings. Survey participants identified their preferred method of instruction, top areas of CIC topics of interest and occupational applicability, and preferences for CIC educational course design and delivery. A low ratio of survey respondents versus completion rate and the lack of participant occupational and demographical diversity were observed challenges. Survey data supported the need for the creation and implementation of a pending CIC educational course with a goal of mirroring the educational needs of advanced practice registered nurses.

Show moreResidents in long-term care settings with behavioral psychiatric symptoms in dementia (BPSD) are at increased risk of experiencing lower quality of life due to inconsistency in staff assignments. BPSD and inconsistent staff assignments affect residents' quality of life due to stress and anxiety experienced during activities of daily living (ADLs), interfering with caregiving and daily functioning. According to Brennan et al. (2017), “By minimizing the number of different staff who provide care during a resident’s stay, consistent staff assignment promotes more resident-centered care and is thought to result in improved resident functioning and quality of life” (p. 851). There is an urgency for healthcare providers, administrators, and caregivers to address this problem. The purpose of this program evaluation project was to assess the effect of consistent caregivers’ assignments on residents in long-term care facilities exhibiting behavioral psychiatric symptoms of dementia (BPSD). This project was implemented at Brookdale Palm Beach Gardens and consisted of a convenience sample of residents from the memory care unit (N=21). Additionally, 19 caregivers were trained and assisted with the data collection using the Agitated Behavior in Dementia (ABID) scale for the nine-week duration of the intervention. Furthermore, an extensive review of medical records and medication administration records was completed to identify the frequency of psychotropic medications used to relieve BPSD. The descriptive statistics data were analyzed for nine- weeks using Intellectus statistics software program (2021). The descriptive statistics included means, standard deviation, and frequency distributions. The variables distribution is not considered to be asymmetrical about its means, and it is not markedly different than a normal distribution. The improvements that were seen throughout the program, though not statistically significant, should not be ignored; they can be promising for a similar future project.

Show moreGeographical and health-related obstacles frequently prevent veterans from receiving care from civilian hospitals and the Veterans Health Administration. Due to poor patient education and lack of access to mental health care, many patients with serious mental health illnesses have no choice but to go to emergency care for mental health treatment that could be treated effectively in an outpatient setting. An initiative identifying the factors that lead veterans to the emergency room for preventable mental health services has the potential to improve public health. Home-based mental health care can be provided in many modalities, including telehealth, video conferences, and in-person (face-to-face; In addition to eliminating transportation issues, improving access to mental health services, and reducing the stressors of waiting for appointments in outpatient clinics. The project was conducted with veterans enrolled in a home-based primary care program at a Southwest Region Hospital. A total of 15 male veterans between the ages of 55 and 85 agreed to participate. Six were African American (40 %), 5 were White (33 %), and four were Hispanic (26.6 %). A repeated measures ANOVA was conducted on PSS-10 scores. The main effect for the within-subjects factor was significant, F(3, 42) = 41.59, p < .001, indicating there were significant differences between the values of Pre-Intervention PSS-10 scores, Month 1 Pss-10 score Month 2 Pss-10 score, and Month 3 PSS-10 scores. A Repeated Measure ANOVA was conducted on Psych ER visits. The main effect for the within-subjects factor was significant, F(1, 14) = 93.04, p < .001, indicating significant differences between the values of Pre-intervention Psych ER visits and Month 3 Psych ER visits.

Untreated OSA can lead to adverse metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurocognitive consequences, possibly reducing one’s lifespan. Education and screening can spread awareness among a community which typically has limited access to resources and may promote early recognition and treatment. In a Christian-based prison reentry residential community, a pre-test survey was provided to a total sample of 19 participants to measure baseline knowledge of OSA. After administration of the pre-survey, education was provided in a group setting, using a detailed brochure the DNP student created. After participants read through the material and questions were answered, the post-survey was administered to measure if knowledge regarding OSA increased. Screening using the STOP-Bang questionnaire occurred after the post-surveys. The DNP student followed up with participants found to be at high risk for OSA patients over a 3-month period. A 37% of participants scored high risk for OSA, 37% scored intermediate risk, and 26% scored low risk. The p-value calculated to measure pre-and-post OSA knowledge using the survey total score was statistically significant (< .001.). Of the seven total participants who scored high risk, two were newly diagnosed with OSA after referral to a PCP for a sleep study with the help of the telephonic phone sessions. Education and screening demonstrated to be beneficial, resulting in positive outcomes. Project partakers were successfully able to define OSA, list risk factors, and describe how to diagnose and treat the condition. Participants who were newly diagnosed, previously diagnosed, or refused the sleep study managed to adjust modifiable risk factors over the summer such as weight loss, diet, and management of chronic conditions.

Show moreCaring for chronically ill patients, such as those suffering from dementia, can have a significant impact on the stress levels of healthcare professionals. Healthcare professionals are often physically and mentally affected by the stress experienced in their jobs, which may result in compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue negatively affects healthcare providers, patients, and healthcare organizations. Current guidelines encourage education with self-care strategies to prevent or decrease the effects of compassion fatigue. This quality improvement project aimed to increase knowledge of compassion fatigue among the interprofessional staff at an adult daycare and improve clients' behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Within a six-week timeframe, a one-time educational intervention about compassion fatigue and mitigation strategies was implemented. Participants completed a preintervention ProQOL5 assessment and pre- and post-intervention surveys of knowledge about compassion fatigue. Although the sample was small and the time was short, analysis of the quantitative data showed significant improvement in knowledge about compassion fatigue post-intervention. The results of the ProQOL5 also demonstrated differences in compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue among participants based on demographics. There were no documented changes in the BPSD of the clients who attended the adult daycare. It was recommended that new and current staff education about compassion fatigue be incorporated into the training programs. Future projects should include larger sample sizes, more extended periods of study time, and methods for tracking BPSD symptoms.

Show moreIn the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, bereavement and grief have become two widely used terms in modern day society. The terms are often used interchangeably to describe a feeling of deep sorrow felt after the loss of a loved one. Often it can be difficult for individuals to cope with the loss of a loved one, and it is estimated that 20% of bereaved individuals will experience complicated grief (NAMI, 2021). Complicated grief, often referred to as a prolonged grief disorder, can be defined in several ways. Today, the most widely accepted definition of complicated grief is grief that persists for longer than one year and significantly interrupts an individuals’ ability to complete daily functions (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). Each year, there are roughly 2.6 million deaths in the US alone, leaving behind approximately 13 million individuals (about twice the population of Arizona) to grieve (U.S. Census, 2021). A study conducted in 2019, surveyed 1,084 US adults and found that 32% had experienced grief following the death of a loved one in the past three years (The Grief Experience, 2019). Furthermore, of U.S. adults over the age of 65, 71% reported experiencing bereavement in the previous 30 months (Williams & Sawyer, 2017).
