- Abstract/Description

Lookback options are path dependent contingent claims whose payoff depend on the extrema of a given security's price over a given period. Some of these options are already traded on specialized markets (such as foreign exchange) and mostly in over-the-counter market alongside with other path dependent options (knock-ins, knock-outs, etc.). This thesis examines the existing pricing models of conventional options as well as standard European lookback options and provides some results about...

Show moreI show that auditors experience cognitive dissonance when they fail to take appropriate professionally skeptical (hereafter PS) action in line with high PS judgment I specifically show that cognitive dissonance leads auditors to revise their attitudes on low ranking audit actions upward and lower their risk assessments, consequently, lower overall professional skepticism I also find that auditor cognitive dissonance leads to exaggerated ex-post auditor self-assessments professional skepticism Professional skepticism is fundamental to performing an audit according to auditing standards and critical to audit quality Extant research that investigates treatments to enhance professional skepticism predominantly treats both skeptical judgment and skeptical action as analogous outcomes of professional skepticism If, however, there is a breakdown between PS judgment and PS action, the overall benefits of these treatments will be trivial I show that cognitive dissonance due to the incongruence between PS judgments and PS actions leads to an unforeseeable corollary of lower overall professional skepticism I also demonstrate a specific mechanism of how auditor incentives lead to lower professional skepticism, hence, lower audit quality Both researchers and practitioners can benefit from this study by better understating the intricacies in the critical link between PS judgment and action Additionally, I provide an empirical investigation of the components in Nelson’s (2009) model of professional skepticism and extend the model to reflect the intricacies between PS judgment and PS action I test my hypotheses via a three-group research design with attitude change as a proxy measure of cognitive dissonance

Show moreThis study provides empirical evidence on the impact of high-tech firms' unrecognized intangible investments on the market valuation of cash flow and accrual amounts. In particular, this study empirically examines the different valuation weights that capital market participants attach to accrual-based versus cash flow-based measures when valuing intangible-intensive, high-technology stocks, and finds that investors appear to value, on average, a dollar of cash flows higher than a dollar of accruals for intangible-intensive high-technology firms. Based on samples of Compustat high- and low-technology firms between 1992--2001, the empirical results suggest that cash flows have larger multiplier than aggregate accruals, and have incremental value-relevant information beyond that contained in the individual components of accruals for valuing high-technology stocks. This study further provides evidence that suggests that cash earnings measures of low-technology firms are dominated by those of high-technology firms as a summary indicator of share values. This study contributes to existing literature that reports no substantial difference in the value relevance of cash flow and accrual amounts in high and low tech industries. It provides evidence that suggests that capital market investors do not hold high-tech stocks to the same standards of valuation that they use for low-tech traditional stocks.

The thesis first develops the rational expectations macromodel, including discussions of the model's assumptions, robustness, econometric issues, and important empirical results. The pure theory of information is then developed, and the "polar cases" of full information and complete information deprivation are examined. Finally, a generalized model of information acquisition and "transmission noise" are developed within the rational expectations framework.

The model's underlying theories, developed by Harry Markowitz and James Tobin, are presented first. This is followed by themathematicalderivation, developed by William Sharpe. Special attention is given to the controversial assumptions imposea by Markowitz and Tobin, which emerge in the CAPM. Major tests of the CAPM are reviewed next: and the empirical problems associated with test design are highlighted. It is shown that variations in test design produce controversial test results. The specific tests reviewed here fail to provide strong support for the nodel; nevertheless it becomes evident that such tests fostered a vast outpouring of new and extended models. The CAPM remains a breakthrough in financial and economic literature which deserves to be explored even more intensely in the future.

These drastic changes have occurred under an outdated legal framework. This paper will recommend a comprehensive reform to our copyright law to uphold the intentions of copyright in the modern, digital age of today. By looking at the history of copyright and its evolution, one can assess how Congress has been tasked with establishing a fair market value for music by promoting the public interest and fairly compensating copyright owners. This will lead to an evaluation and comparison of those methods used to determine fair market value for creative works that will be the basis of the recommendation used to modernize copyright law. This recommendation will comprehensively provide for equitable treatment for all parties in the streaming age through its totality, additional reforms, and alternative ideas.

A background of the Flow of Funds framework and financial modelling begins the study, and is followed by an overview of traditional input-output techniques, required in the derivation of the model. Matrix adjustment of input-output systems introduces Stone's 'financial input-output models', where his structure of sectoral balance sheets, input-output type financial models and preferred portfolio pattern models are discussed. Estimation of the model involves aggregation of FOP data and its categorisation by sectors and types of financial instruments. Empirical applications presented include short-term forecasting and an analysis of the model's dynamic time path.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the behavioral approach to the subject matter of a one quarter macro-principles course. In addition to the question of method the problematical aspects of content and purpose are also examined. The question of what to teach and to whom to teach it has not been resolved and an attempt is made in this thesis to provide a rationale for the development of a substantive content which would provide the student with means to make relatable interpretive use of the knowledge gained.

- Creator
- BENNETT, MARIE ELAINE., Florida Atlantic University, Stronge, William B., College of Business, Department of Economics
- Abstract/Description
-
This thesis tests whether a simple income-expenditure model is a better predictor of induced expenditure and thus income than a simple quantity theory model. A spectral analysis was performed using alternative definitions of money, income and expenditure. From the results of cross spectral analysis, it was concluded that the money supply is the better predictor of short run (8 months - 3 years) fluctuations in consumption and thus in income.

The purpose of alien expulsion was to increase domestic employment by offering to Ghanaians the positions previously held by aliens. This thesis examines the economic logic of alien expulsion. Certain assumptions had to have been made in order for alien expulsion to increase domestic employment. Each of these assumptions is examined to see if it accurately depicted the conditions it described. The results of alien expulsion are then examined in light of the logic set up by this thesis.

Show moreI investigate whether or not a firm’s social network size (also known as social capital) impacts the quality of its information environment. Following social capital theory, I posit three potential channels that help bring an informational advantage to wellconnected firms. First, well-connected firms are likely to have timely access to a broader set of information that affords them the opportunity to disclose this information. Second, a social network fosters trust among social peers, which promotes the transfer of more accurate information within that network. Third, well-connected executives and directors have greater reputational capital at stake, which may encourage them to provide accurate information to the market. I provide evidence that well-connected firms have higher quality information environments. I further document that the beneficial impact of the firm’s social network size on the quality of the firm’s information environment is higher for complex firms. I also find that the beneficial effect of the firm’s social ties on the quality of the firm’s information environment is greater when the firm’s connections are in the same industry or are top executives or are industry leaders or are financiers in the capital markets. My study extends existing social network literature by investigating whether firm’s social connections to outside executives and directors impact the quality of the firm’s information environment. My paper focuses on the networking skills of the executives and directors and extends the literature on how executives’ and directors’ personal characteristics are important. Additionally, I respond to the call by Engelberg et al. (2013) to identify the mechanism by which a CEO’s network creates value to the firm and well-connected CEOs get paid higher compensation. This study also contributes to a growing debate in social network literature between social capital theory and agency theory. Finally, my study is important to the regulators and standard setters as they can provide further evidence on the impact of non-financial information on the information quality surrounding the firm.

Show moreThe proposed study examines the effect of CEO-board social connections on corporate policies. Motivated by the independent board view and collaborative board view, I propose two opposing hypotheses explaining the effect of CEO-board connections on corporate policies: monitoring hypothesis and advising hypothesis. In my first essay, I validate the two competing hypotheses of CEO-board connections by investigating the effect of CEO-board connections on monitoring and advising role of the board, and firm valuation. I find that CEO-board connections have a negative effect on board monitoring and positive effect on board advising and firm valuation. The results are robust to endogeneity concerns and different model specifications. Disentangling the Channels, I also show that the predicted effect of CEO-board connections on board monitoring and advising have opposite effects on firm valuation. Lastly, I provide evidence that the effect of CEO-board connections on firm performance is stronger in firms with high growth opportunities.
