The magnitude of immune responses to vaccination is a critical factor in determining protection from diseases. We reported that nicotine disrupts the properties of DCs that are pivotal in the initiation of immune response to vaccines. Here we investigated whether TLR agonist(s) could overcome the effects of nicotine on human DC and DC-NK cross-talk essential for effector T cell generation. nicDC, nicDC-NK, and nicDC-NK-T cultures exposed to TLR agonists were evaluated for expression of...

We reported that nicotine disrupts the properties of DCs that are pivotal in the initiation of immune response to vaccines. Here we investigated whether TLR agonist(s) could overcome the effects of nicotine on human DC and DC-NK cross-talk essential for effector T cell generation. nicDC, nicDC-NK, and nicDC-NK-T cultures exposed to TLR agonists were evaluated for expression of costimulatory molecules, cytokines, and intracellular cytokine IFN-g using ELISA and flow cytometry. Our data shows that among the TLR agonists, TLR3 and TLR8/7 synergistically optimized nicDC maturation co-cultured NK cell activation. Importantly, similar to DC-NK, nicDC-NK treated with TLR3 and TLR8/7 and co-cultured with naïve T cells promoted a comparable number of effector T cells. Our data suggest that the addition of appropriate TLR agonist(s) to vaccine formulation could potentially improve the smokers’ immune response to vaccination.

CCRCs are challenged to provide therapies that enhance ability to carry out activities of daily living for these residents. The purpose of this project is to identify effective therapies. The Stinger Action research model is being used to guide the project. Students have met with a community representative who has focused attention on falls, behavioral problems and pharmacological management of dementia and Parkinson’s disease. An exhaustive literature search has been undertaken to provide evidence. There are pharmacological approaches to manage symptoms. However, there is less evidence supporting non-pharmacological approaches addressing behavioral problems and falls. Models of CCRC care are evolving and integration of person- centered non-pharmacological, evidence-based approaches will be critical and best developed with resident input.

Participants include 26 fourth graders at Park Lakes Elementary. A pretest will be given, 5 lessons taught, and then a posttest. Pretest and posttest scores will be analyzed, to track learning gains and the validity of explicitly teaching vocabulary to increase comprehension. All 26 students are expected to earn a higher score on the posttest, compared to the pretest. After result analyzation, I will report concluding results. My intent is to evaluate this technique with the hope that it will be an effective teaching strategy that will improve low expectancy student scores on the ELA area of the Florida Standardized Assessments.

This project explores people’s attitudes towards cancer and its cure based on demographics such as age.

Conopressins are conopeptides that target vasopressin/oxytocin receptors in vascular smooth muscle cells that are found within blood vessels. The crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP) is a homologous peptide found in crustaceans and has been shown to behave as a cardioaccelerator in a homologous system. This study describes the effects of CCAP in Drosophila larvae. We find that CCAP has an inotropic effect by causing a change in the contraction of blood vessels. We further investigate the effects of another possibly cardioactive conopeptide, γ-conopressin-vil, in Drosophila larvae. Elucidating the effects of conopetides in Drosophila larvae may translate to cardioactive therapeutic uses in mammalian systems.

In 2014, the motion for covering additional immigrants under the act was blocked by the courts, and as of 2018, President Trump plans on disbanding DACA as well as the DREAM act, changing the lives of millions who have shaped America. For this research, I conducted a literature review that examines the benefits and limitations of DACA, the emotional and mental effects of being an “illegal” immigrant, and the political views of members of the current U.S. administration that will threaten the lives of many. Finally, I propose a possible research project to further explore this issue.

Show moreOften, in the traditional adversarial court system, prosecutors work to secure a conviction of drug offenders whereas the defense seeks dismissal of the charges or a less punishable sentence. The judge acts as a neutral entity hearing testimony and sustaining or overruling arguments made by opposing sides. In drug courts, which is a type of non-adversarial problem-solving court, these members of the courtroom work group work together to enhance the likelihood of drug offenders reducing their substance abuse and future criminal activity. With the growing incarceration rate in the United States, some states have opted to use drug courts as a way to divert offenders away from prisons. In this poster, I present data collected via one drug court observation and film notes discussing the roles, power and ethical standards of drug court officials and how they differ from the traditional adversarial system.

A calcium dependent NAT enzyme has been characterized biochemically but has not been cloned. The purpose of this study was to identify NAT enzyme in Caenorhabditis elegans. The strain MGL107 overproduces NAEs and as a result exhibits delayed growth. We have found that 10 of 35 genes with N-acyltransferase activity are able to restore growth of MGL107. Interestingly, acl-10, acl-12, and acl-13 also showed increased mRNA levels in a strain with reduced NAEs, possibly indicating a compensatory mechanism. These data suggests that these three genes could potentially code for the calcium dependent NAT and should be further analyzed biochemically.

It is an ever-growing issue with more slaves now than at any other point in history, totaling to roughly 27 million victims of the Human Trafficking Slave Trade. More specifically, Miami, Florida is the third largest site for human trafficking in the United States. By studying human behavior and targeting portals for slave trade, the redesigned objects will be placed in airports and suspected establishments in our environment. The irony created by the graphics, specifically on site, will capture attention and stir a public concern about human trafficking. Furthermore, it will also provide the audience with the means to take action. Our objective of this research is to find creative solutions through the redesigning of common items, such as traffic signs, and placing them in the environment to raise public awareness.

The quasi-immediate exchange of information that surpasses the now ancient barriers of time and space has triggered a sociocultural revolution with perceptible effects on the linguistic characteristics that are at the core of collective and individual identities. Among the most noticeable cultural changes are neologisms, which are often at the center of heated linguistic debates. Some claim that the increased use of neologisms in the Italian language is a natural component of the fluctuating nature of a language and that their use enriches it. Linguistic purists take a more conservative stance and view neologisms as a linguistic enemy who blurs the distinctive differences among languages and robs them of their uniqueness. Neologisms are a mirror of contemporary Italian society and their use entails an often subconscious support of certain social currents.

Not much research has been conducted on these differences, but in the studies which have been conducted, it has been concluded that there are substantial differences that exist between generations. In the limited amount of research that has been conducted, the sample was relatively small, making the survey incomprehensive. In order to understand these differences and where the opinions of generations differ, we developed an online survey about people’s opinions on controversial issues debated about in modern society. We found that there are statistically significant differences between age groups and their views on social issues such as religion, sex before marriage, same sex marriage, and abortion. Our results have shown that people are beginning to move away from the more traditional values and into more liberal viewpoints.

Show moreBiometrics, the identification of specific individuals by unique physical characteristics ¬– like fingerprints, irises, or facial features – promises greater convenience and security than traditional methods since physical features cannot be lost or forgotten. Our study explores practical implementations of biometrics, especially its projected growth in the field of mobile transactions. Our study supports the claim that usage of biometric systems, especially in the authentication of mobile transactions, will significantly increase despite security and privacy breaches. Because biometrics is a relatively new technology with little previous data, we circumvent this issue by correlating its usage to that of smart phones in order to analyze statistics to create regression analyses. According to our findings, the number of biometric users will increase from $7.72 billion in 2014 to $10.26 billion in 2019, thus it would be prudent to invest in biometrics by implementing more systems, and creating more reliable systems based on new standards.

Show moreThis research is an examination of the morphological and syntactical features found within verb phrases of Chaldean Neo-Aramaic, a Semitic language which originates from Mesopotamia. From this examination, a configurational model is proposed, which depicts the grammatical arrangement of these morphosyntactic features during verb phrase formation. Additionally, accompanying this description of the language's verb phrases, a dependency-based approach is taken for the analysis of the language's sentence structure. Such a method departs from traditional perspectives which posit that the concept of a sentence is the compositional result of two distinct linguistic elements: a subject and a predicate (the verb phrase). However, from the analysis of the language, an argument is presented for a reconsideration of the conceptualization of a sentence that would position the verb as the primary element, or nucleus, on which all other occurring elements are either directly or indirectly dependent.

We examine two dimensions of niche partitioning (diet and temporal) amongst the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) and the Atlantic longarm octopus (Macrotritopus defilippi), which spatially overlap in a South Florida intracoastal habitat. SCUBA is used to collect octopus prey remains and gather supplemental feeding images to determine diets of each species. A 24h octopus monitoring camera records foraging activity times for each species. The common octopus consumes bivalves (49%), gastropods (32%) and crustaceans (19%), and forages at dawn, dusk, and nocturnal hours. The Atlantic longarm octopus consumes crustaceans (89%) and bivalves (11%), and forages during diurnal hours. Results suggest there is diet overlap between species and octopuses use temporal partitioning. This study provides additional findings to cephalopod niche partitioning literature, novel information on the ecology of the Atlantic longarm octopus, and conservation requirements for sand-dwelling species.
