In this research an attempt is made at explaining the physical processes behind energy dissipation during wave breaking, through spectral analysis of the resulting sound. The size of an air bubble can be directly linked to the frequency of the sound that is heard using the simple harmonic solution to the Rayleigh–Plesset equation. Show moreIn this research an attempt is made at explaining the physical processes behind energy dissipation during wave breaking, through spectral analysis of the resulting sound. The size of an air bubble can be directly linked to the frequency of the sound that is heard using the simple harmonic solution to the Rayleigh–Plesset equation. It indicates the inverse relationship between frequency and bubble size. And this relationship has been used to identify wave breaking in general [MANASSEH 2006]. Now this research goes a step farther and looks at how the frequency spectrum of the sound changes with time, in an effort to understand the general pattern and from that to deduce an empirical equation that describes the breaking down of turbulence during a wave breaking event. Two main processes have been identified, with the second process having three main indicators that are necessary to evidence wave breaking. The first process is a near instantaneous shattering of the initial air bubble into much smaller metastable bubbles of a size that appears to be common for all waves independent of wave height. Then in the second process, the bubbles continue to break down following a recognisable pattern.

The modifications were applied in terms of section modulus and include adjustments due to core inclusion, buoyancy, and added mass. Hydrodynamic loads and mode shapes were calculated using the modified BEMT based analysis tools. A 3D model of the blade was developed using SolidWorks. The model was integrated with ANSYS and several loading scenarios, calculated from the modified simulation tools, were applied. A complete stress and failure analysis was then performed. Additionally, the rainflow counting method was used on ocean current velocity data to determine the loading histogram for fatigue analysis. A constant life diagram and cumulative fatigue damage model were used to predict the OCT blade life. Due to a critical area of fatigue failure being found in the blade adhesive joint, a statistical analysis was performed on experimental adhesive joint data.

During turning maneuvers waterjet systems may experience low efficiency, cavitation, vibration, and noise. This study found that during turns less energy arrived at the waterjet pump relative to operating straight ahead, and that the flow field at the entrance of the waterjet pump exhibited a region of both low pressure and low axial velocity. The primary reason for the change in pump inflow uniformity is due to a streamwise vortex. In oblique inflow the hull boundary layer separates when entering the inlet and wraps up forming the streamwise vortex. These changes in pump inflow during turning maneuvers will result in increased unsteady loading of the pump rotor and early onset of pump rotor cavitation.

Show moreThis thesis was about finding a recovery method for TiO2, using a TiO2 recovery technology, which was high enough to be economical ($10 - $15 per 1,000 gallons) to be adopted by wastewater treatment plants. When comparing recovery technologies, the top three which were investigated further through experimentation were a centrifuge, sedimentation tank, and microfilter membrane. Upon experimentation and research, the TiO2 recovery efficiencies of these technologies were 99.5%, 92.5%, and 96.3%, respectively. When doing economic analysis on these technologies comparing TiO2 efficiencies and capital and operational costs, the centrifuge was the most preferred economic option. Also, its cost did were in the economical range ($10 - $15/1,000 gallons) which makes even this technology economical. Besides that, important and valuable information about TiO2: settling behavior, particle size and zeta potential, interactions with COD, and filter operations (particle characterization) were discovered for future research and future testing on this issue.

One popular method for interpreting vibration signals is envelope demodulation, which allows a technician to clearly identify an impulsive fault source and its severity. However incipient faults -faults in early stages - are masked by in-band noise, which can make the associated impulses difficult to detect and interpret. In this thesis, Wavelet De-Noising (WDN) is implemented after envelope-demodulation to improve accuracy of bearing fault diagnostics. This contrasts the typical approach of de-noising as a preprocessing step. When manually measuring time-domain impulse amplitudes, the algorithm shows varying improvements in Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) relative to background vibrational noise. A frequency-domain measure of SNR agrees with this result.

Show moreA computational tool has been developed by integrating National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) codes, Sandia National Laboratories' NuMAD, and ANSYS to investigate a horizontal axis composite ocean current turbine. The study focused on the design, analysis, and life prediction of composite blade considering random ocean current, cyclic rotation, and hurricane-driven ocean current. A structural model for a horizontal axis FAU research OCT blade was developed. Following NREL codes were used: PreCom, BModes, ModeShape, AeroDyn and FAST. PreComp was used to compute section properties of the OCT blade. BModes and ModeShape calculated the mode shapes of the blade. Hydrodynamic loading on the OCT blade was calculated by modifying the inputs to AeroDyn and FAST. These codes were then used to obtain the dynamic response of the blade, including blade tip displacement, normal force (FN) and tangential force (FT), flap and edge bending moment distribution with respect to blade rotation.

The goal of this thesis is to see if the SUE combustor is a viable alternative to conventional combustors which utilize swirlers. It is found that for the can type combustor the NOx emissions were quite low compared to other combustor types but the CO emissions were fairly high. The annular combustor shows better CO emissions compared to the can type, but the CO emissions are still high compared to other combustors. Emissions can be improved by providing better mixing in the primary combustion zone. The SUE combustor design needs to be further refined in order for it to be a viable alternative to conventional combustors with swirlers.

Show moreThe research presented in this thesis utilizes Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory with a dynamic wake model to customize the OrcaFlex numeric simulation platform in order to allow modeling of moored Ocean Current Turbines (OCTs). This work merges the advanced cable modeling tools available within OrcaFlex with well documented BEM rotor modeling approach creating a combined tool that was not previously available for predicting the performance of moored ocean current turbines. This tool allows ocean current turbine developers to predict and optimize the performance of their devices and mooring systems before deploying these systems at sea. The BEM rotor model was written in C++ to create a back-end tool that is fed continuously updated data on the OCT’s orientation and velocities as the simulation is running. The custom designed code was written specifically so that it could operate within the OrcaFlex environment. An approach for numerically modeling the entire OCT system is presented, which accounts for the additional degree of freedom (rotor rotational velocity) that is not accounted for in the OrcaFlex equations of motion. The properties of the numerically modeled OCT were then set to match those of a previously numerically modeled Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center (SNMREC) OCT system and comparisons were made. Evaluated conditions include: uniform axial and off axis currents, as well as axial and off axis wave fields. For comparison purposes these conditions were applied to a geodetically fixed rotor, showing nearly identical results for the steady conditions but varied, in most cases still acceptable accuracy, for the wave environment. Finally, this entire moored OCT system was evaluated in a dynamic environment to help quantify the expected behavioral response of SNMREC’s turbine under uniform current.

The wave forces are determined using a suite of methods which include the Froude-Krylov method for incident wave forces, Wagner's method and ABS rules for the slamming wave force, and numerical methods for nonlinear wave radiation forces. Finite difference methods are developed to determine the wave forced vibrations of ship hull plates which are modeled using a range of plate theories including nonlinear plate theory with and without material damping and orthotropic plate theory for stiffened hull plates. For small amplitude deformation of thin plates, a semi-theoretical superposition method is used to determine the free and forced vibrations. The transient ship hull vibration due to whipping is also analyzed using the finite difference method. Results, in the form of deformations and stress distributions, are obtained for a range of scantling and wave parameters to identify key parameters to consider in ship structural design.

Show moreThe aim of this study was to investigate the diffusion of chloride ions into concrete samples that were exposed in scenarios that simulate the splash, tidal, atmospheric, and immersed portions of a marine structure. To study the atmospheric deposition, the project also investigated the relationship between chloride ion deposition on the wet candle and its accumulation into concrete samples. Results from the wet candle experiment indicated that between 2% and 45% of the chlorides deposited per square meter of exposed area could be found within the concrete samples. After 6 months, slag G1a blocks showed the most resistance to chloride penetration in the tidal and splash simulations. After 10 months of exposure, fly ash samples had the slowest rates of diffusion in the tidal simulation while the fly ash + silica fume samples and the slag samples measured similar rates of diffusion within the tidal zone. After 90 days of curing, cylinders composed of 20% fly ash & 8% silica fume measured the highest average resistivity values and were found to be less vulnerable to chloride ion penetration than the 20% fly ash and the 50% slag concrete through rapid migration tests.

Numerical models of the selected sensors are developed, and then utilized to add stochastic measurement error to numerically-generated, non-stochastic OCT data. Numerically-generated current velocity and turbine performance measurements are used to quantify the relative influence of sensor-specific error and sampling limitations on sensor measurements and calculated OCT performance results. The study shows that the addition of sensor error alters the variance and mean of OCT performance metric data by roughly 7.1% and 0.24%, respectively, for four evaluated operating conditions. It is shown that sensor error results in a mean, maximum and minimum performance metric to Signal to Noise Ration (SNR) of 48.6% and 6.2%, respectively.

Show moreOn August 5, 2010 the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has designated the Center for Ocean Energy Technology (COET) at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) as a national center for ocean energy research and development. Their focus is the research and development of open-ocean current systems and associated infrastructure needed to development and testing prototypes. The generation of power is achieved by using a specialized electric generator with a rotor called a turbine. As with all machines, the turbines will need maintenance and replacement as they near the end of their lifecycle. This prognostic health monitoring (PHM) requires data to be collected, stored, and analyzed in order to maximize the lifespan, reduce downtime and predict when failure is eminent. This thesis explores the use of a data gateway which will separate high level software with low level hardware including sensors and actuators. The gateway will v standardize and store the data collected from various sensors with different speeds, formats, and interfaces allowing an easy and uniform transition to a database system for analysis.

The work of Guerra is based on a lot of assumptions and simplifications to the geometry of the turbine and structure. This work takes the geometry of the actual turbine, and uses computational fluid dynamic software to numerically model the flow around the turbine structure. Varying the angle of the attack altered the results, and as the angle increased the noise levels along with the sound pulse, and unsteady loading increased. Increasing the number of blades and reducing the chord length both reduced the unsteady loading.

For building MCM/PHM models, vibration sensor data is among the most useful (because it can show abnormal behavior which has yet to cause damage) and the most challenging (because due to its waveform nature, frequency bands must be extracted from the signal). To perform the necessary analysis of the vibration signals, which may arrive rapidly in the form of data streams, we develop three new wavelet-based transforms (the Streaming Wavelet Transform, Short-Time Wavelet Packet Decomposition, and Streaming Wavelet Packet Decomposition) and propose modifications to the existing Short-TIme Wavelet Transform. ... The proposed algorithms also create and select frequency-band features which focus on the areas of the signal most important to MCM/PHM, producing only the information necessary for building models (or removing all unnecessary information) so models can run on less powerful hardware. Finally, we demonstrate models which can work in multiple environmental conditions. ... Our results show that many of the transforms give similar results in terms of performance, but their different properties as to time complexity, ability to operate in a fully streaming fashion, and number of generated features may make some more appropriate than others in particular applications, such as when streaming data or hardware limitations are extremely important (e.g., ocean turbine MCM/PHM).

Show moreIn this thesis, a 2D CHebyshev spectral domain decomposition method is developed for simulating the generation and propagation of internal waves over a topography. While the problem of stratified flow over topography is by no means a new one, many aspects of internal wave generation and breaking are still poorly understood. This thesis aims to reproduce certain observed features of internal waves by using a Chebyshev collation method in both spatial directions. The numerical model solves the inviscid, incomprehensible, fully non-linear, non-hydrostatic Boussinesq equations in the vorticity-streamfunction formulation. A number of important features of internal waves over topography are captured with the present model, including the onset of wave-breaking at sub-critical Froude numbers, up to the point of overturning of the pycnoclines. Density contours and wave spectra are presented for different combinations of Froude numbers, stratifications and topographic slope.

The air-cushion pressure and the vessel speed are varied, and the seakeeping results are compared as functions of these two parameters. The experiment results show a distinct correlation between the air-cushion pressure and the response amplitude of both pitch and heave. The results of these experiments are compared against results of a computer model of a Surface Effect Ship (SES).

Machine Condition Monitoring (MCM) / Prognostic Health Monitoring (PHM) systems allow for self-checking and automated fault detection, and are integral in the construction of a highly reliable ocean turbine. MCM/PHM systems enable real time health assessment, prognostics and advisory generation by interpreting data from sensors installed on the machine being monitored. To effectively utilize sensor readings for determining the health of individual components, macro-components and the overall system, these measurements must somehow be combined or integrated to form a holistic picture. The process used to perform this combination is called data fusion. Data mining and machine learning techniques allow for the analysis of these sensor signals, any maintenance history and other available information (like expert knowledge) to automate decision making and other such processes within MCM/PHM systems. ... This dissertation proposes an MCM/PHM software architecture employing those techniques which were determined from the experiments to be ideal for this application. Our work also offers a data fusion framework applicable to ocean machinery MCM/PHM. Finally, it presents a software tool for monitoring ocean turbines and other submerged vessels, implemented according to industry standards.

Maintenance on ocean-based machinery can be very costly. To avoid unnecessary maintenance it is necessary to monitor the condition of each machine in order to predict problems. This kind of prognostic health monitoring (PHM) requires a condition-based maintenance (CBM) system that supports diagnostic and prognostic analysis of large amounts of data. Research in this field led to the creation of ISO13374 and the development of a standard open-architecture for machine condition monitoring. This thesis explores an implementation of such a system for ocean-based machinery using this framework and current open-standard technologies.

Any structure attached to a turbine upstream its blades will generate unsteady fluctuating loads on the blade's surface, which are proportional to the radiated acoustic pressure. The noise levels of a simplified turbine based on existing designs surpass the ambient noise levels of the ocean at low frequencies ( 30 Hz).

Any structure attached to a turbine upstream its blades will generate unsteady fluctuating loads on the blade's surface, which are proportional to the radiated acoustic pressure. The noise levels of a simplified turbine based on existing designs surpass the ambient noise levels of the ocean at low frequencies (< 20 Hz) by approximately 50 dB ref 1 μPa and stay under the ambient noise levels at higher frequencies for a blade-passing frequency of 0.83 Hz and point of observation (100 m, 45 degrees, 45 degrees) from the hub. Streamlining the cross-section of the upstream structure as well as reducing its width decrease the noise levels by approximately 40 dB ref 1 μPa, at low frequencies and moderately increase them at higher frequencies. Increasing the structure-rotor distance decreases the noise levels with increasing frequencies (> 30 Hz).
