Current portable healthcare monitoring systems come in the form of Ambulatory Event Monitors. They are small, battery-operated electrocardiograph devices used to record the heart's rhythm and activity. However, they are not energy-aware ; they are not personalized ; they require long battery life, and ultimately fall short on delivering real-time continuous detection of arrhythmia and specifically progressive development of cardiac A-Fib. The focus of this dissertation is the design of a class of adaptive and efficient energy-aware real-time detection models for monitoring, early real-time detection and reporting of progressive development of cardiac A-Fib.... The design promises to have a greater positive public health impact from predicting A-Fib and providing a viable approach to meeting the energy needs of current and future real-time monitoring, detecting and reporting required in wearable computing healthcare applications that are constrained by scarce energy resources.

Our main contribution is a hardware platform which implements a particular algorithm that solves MRHS systems (and hence block ciphers). The case is made that the platform performs several thousand orders of magnitude faster than software, it costs less than US$1,000,000, and that actual times of block cipher breakage can be calculated once it is known how the corresponding software behaves. Options in MRHS are also explored with a view to increase its efficiency.

Show moreThis study presents and illustrates a methodology to calculate the capacity of an existing reinforced concrete bridge under a non-conventional blast load due to low and intermediate pressures. ATBlast program is used to calculate the blast loads for known values of charge weight and stand off distance. An excel spreadsheet is generated to calculate ultimate resistance, equivalent elastic stiffness, equivalent elastic deflection, natural period of the beam, the maximum deflection, and the maximum rotation in the support for a simple span solid slab and T-Beam bridges. The allowable rotation could be taken as to two degrees. Naval Facility Engineering Command (NAVFAC) approach was adopted, where the inputs were material properties, span length, and area of reinforcement. The use of the Fiber Reinforced Polymer for increasing the capacity of an existing bridge is also presented in this study. Parametric studies were carried out to evaluate the performance of the solid slab and T-Beam bridges under the assumed blast load.

This thesis focuses on analysis of quality of service as implemented by the WiMAX networks. First, it presents the details of the quality of service architecture in WiMAX network. In the analysis, a WiMAX module developed based on popular network simulator ns-2, is used. Various real life scenarios like voice call, video streaming are setup in the simulation environment. Parameters that indicate quality of service, such as, throughput, packet loss, average jitter and average delay, are analyzed for different types of service flows as defined in WiMAX. Results indicate that better quality of service is achieved by using service flows designed for specific applications.

Resistance capacities of bridge deck and composite steel girder are calculated according to AASHTO specifications. Equivalent blast pressures on the bridge components are obtained. Response and performance of concrete deck, steel girders, and supporting piers are evaluated under typical blast loads. The blast induced force in the bridge components are computed in the static analyses for varying amounts of TNT. The blast effects in the supporting pier are determined using both static and dynamic analyses. Further research needs to be done in the dynamic analysis of the bridge system subjected to blast loads.

Even though cache increases performance, it poses some serious challenges for embedded systems running real-time applications. Cache introduces execution time unpredictability due to its adaptive and dynamic nature and cache consumes vast amount of power to be operated. Energy requirement and execution time predictability are crucial for the success of real-time embedded systems. Various cache optimization schemes have been proposed to address the performance, power consumption, and predictability issues. However, currently available solutions are not adequate for real-time embedded systems as they do not address the performance, power consumption, and execution time predictability issues at the same time. Moreover, existing solutions are not suitable for dealing with multi-core architecture issues. In this dissertation, we develop a methodology through cache optimization for real-time embedded systems that can be used to analyze and improve execution time predictability and performance/power ratio at the same time. This methodology is effective for both single-core and multi-core systems. First, we develop a cache modeling and optimization technique for single-core systems to improve performance. Then, we develop a cache modeling and optimization technique for multi-core systems to improve performance/power ratio. We develop a cache locking scheme to improve execution time predictability for real-time systems. We introduce Miss Table (MT) based cache locking scheme with victim cache (VC) to improve predictability and performance/power ratio. MT holds information about memory blocks, which may cause more misses if not locked, to improve cache locking performance., VC temporarily stores the victim blocks from level-1 cache to improve cache hits. In addition, MT is used to improve cache replacement performance and VC is used to improve cache hits by supporting stream buffering. We also develop strategies to generate realistic workload by characterizing applications to simulate cache optimization and cache locking schemes. Popular MPEG4, H.264/AVC, FFT, MI, and DFT applications are used to run the simulation programs. Simulation results show that newly introduced Miss Table based cache locking scheme with victim cache significantly improves the predictability and performance/power ratio. In this work, a reduction of 33% in mean delay per task and a reduction of 41% in total power consumption are achieved by using MT and VCs while locking 25% of level-2 cache size in an 4-core system. It is also observed that execution time predictability can be improved by avoiding more than 50% cache misses while locking one-fourth of the cache size.

The effectiveness of the transportation system is an essential constituent of people's daily lives as they commute between different points of interest. Studies show that at many highway junctions, congestion continues to worsen, and drivers are experiencing greater delays and higher risk exposures. Engineers have very little resources to handle this increase in population. One solution to resolve and alleviate congestion due to increasing traffic volumes and travel demands relies in implementing alternative designs. This approach will help traffic engineers determine which design will be the most appropriate for a particular location. This study compares and evaluates the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), which is an unconventional design, to Partial Cloverleaf (ParClo) types A4 and B4 interchange designs by evaluating different Measure of Effectiveness (MOEs). Using microsimulation platform AIMSUN, each interchange type was evaluated for low, medium and high traffic flows. The analysis revealed that the DDI with four through lanes performed better than the ParClo A4 for unbalanced conditions, the DDI with six though lanes had similar results as the ParClo B4 for very high volumes. In terms of queue, the DDI design had a much better performance. The results from the analysis help in providing guidelines to the decision makers for selecting the best alternative in terms of performance.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to investigate whether statistically significant differences existed between high school Honors Physics websites and those of Advanced Placement (AP) Physics in terms of web-design, National Science Education Standards (NSES) Physics content, and NSES Science Process standards. The procedure began with the selection of 152 sites comprising two groups with equal sample sizes of 76 for Honors Physics and for Advanced Placement Physics. The websites used in the study were accumulated using the Google[TM] search engine. To find Honors Physics websites, the search words "honors physics high school" were entered as the query into the search engine. To find sites for Advanced Placement Physics, the query, "advanced placement physics high school," was entered into the search engine. The evaluation of each website was performed using an instrument developed by the researcher based on three attributes: Web-design, NSES Physics content, and NSES Science Process standards. A "1" was scored if the website was found to have each attribute, otherwise a "0" was given. This process continued until all 76 websites were evaluated for each of the two types of physics websites, Honors and Advanced Placement. Subsequently the data were processed using Excel functions and the SPSS statistical software program. The mean and standard deviation were computed individually for the three attributes under consideration. Three, 2-tailed, independent samples t tests were performed to compare the two groups of physics websites separately on the basis of Web Design, Physics Content, and Science Process. The results of the study indicated that there was only one statistically significant difference between high school Honors Physics websites and those of AP Physics., The only difference detected was in terms of National Science Education Standards Physics content. It was found that Advanced Placement Physics websites contained more NSES physics content than Honors Physics websites. There was no significant difference found between the two types of high school physics websites in regards to web-design, and NSES science process standards. It is hoped that the results of this study may serve as a guide for researchers to explore the role of Web-Assisted Instruction (WAI) as an enhancement to traditional instruction in physics. With the first generation to grow up in the digital age now in high school, WAI may prove to be useful as method to improve critical thinking skills and provide opportunities for inquiry beyond the classroom.

This thesis presents the general design scheme, detailed aerodynamic and hydrodynamic aspects, sailing performance theory, and dynamic performance validation measurements obtained from a series of experiments. The WASP consists of a 4.2 meter long sailboat hull, a low-Reynolds number composite wing, a 2000 Watt-hour battery reservoir, a system of control actuators, a control system running on an embedded microprocessor, a suite of oceanographic sensors, and power regeneration from solar energy. The vehicle has a maximum speed of five knots and weighs approximately 350 kilograms. Results from four oceanographic missions that were conducted in the Port Everglades Intracoastal Waterway in Dania Beach [sic] Florida are presented. Water temperature, salinity and oxidation-reduction measurements recorded during these missions are also discussed. The combination of a mono-hull and solid wing in an autonomous system is a viable design for a long-range ocean observation platform. The results of four near-shore ocean observation missions illustrate the initial capabilities of the design. Future work aimed to further reduce both the mass of the wing design and the power requirements of the system will increase performance in all operating conditions and should be considered. Furthermore, the progression of the legal framework related to ocean vehicles must be pursued with respect to unmanned autonomous systems.

Numerical models of the selected sensors are developed, and then utilized to add stochastic measurement error to numerically-generated, non-stochastic OCT data. Numerically-generated current velocity and turbine performance measurements are used to quantify the relative influence of sensor-specific error and sampling limitations on sensor measurements and calculated OCT performance results. The study shows that the addition of sensor error alters the variance and mean of OCT performance metric data by roughly 7.1% and 0.24%, respectively, for four evaluated operating conditions. It is shown that sensor error results in a mean, maximum and minimum performance metric to Signal to Noise Ration (SNR) of 48.6% and 6.2%, respectively.

Also, because a vehicle navigating the surf zone is a new area of research that lacks experimental data the vehicle was tested in the breaking waves of the surf zone and its motion characteristics were found, as well as the drivetrain forces required to perform this transition. Maneuvering tests provided data that was used to estimate a model for future autonomous control efforts for both land and water navigation.

Show moreA computational tool has been developed by integrating National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) codes, Sandia National Laboratories' NuMAD, and ANSYS to investigate a horizontal axis composite ocean current turbine. The study focused on the design, analysis, and life prediction of composite blade considering random ocean current, cyclic rotation, and hurricane-driven ocean current. A structural model for a horizontal axis FAU research OCT blade was developed. Following NREL codes were used: PreCom, BModes, ModeShape, AeroDyn and FAST. PreComp was used to compute section properties of the OCT blade. BModes and ModeShape calculated the mode shapes of the blade. Hydrodynamic loading on the OCT blade was calculated by modifying the inputs to AeroDyn and FAST. These codes were then used to obtain the dynamic response of the blade, including blade tip displacement, normal force (FN) and tangential force (FT), flap and edge bending moment distribution with respect to blade rotation.

The focus of this research is the development of a Dynamic Position (DP) and motion mitigation system for the RDSP. This will be accomplished though the validation of the mathematical simulation, development of a novel propulsion system, and implementation of a PID controller. The result of this research is an assessment of the response characteristics of the RDSP that quantifies the performance of the propulsion system coupled with active control providing a solid basis for further controller development and operational testing.

Armor composites are usually made by reinforcing Kevlar fabric into the mixture of a polymer and nanoscale particles. The current procedure deviates from the traditional shear thickening fluid (STF) route and instead uses silane (amino-propyl-trimethoxy silane) as the base polymer. In addition, a cross-linking fixative such as Glutaraldehyde (Gluta) is added to the polymer to create bridges between distant pairs of amine groups present in Kevlar and silated nanoparticles. Water, silane, nanoparticles and Gluta are mixed using a homogenizer and an ultra-sonochemical technique. Subsequently, the admixture is impregnated with Kevlar - bypassing the heating and evaporating processes involved with STF. The resulting composites have shown remarkable improvement in spike resistance; at least one order higher than that of STF/Kevlar composites. The source of improvement has been traced to the formation of secondary amine C-N stretch due to the presence of Gluta.

There are extensive studies in the field of WSN investigating different algorithms and protocols for data collection. A data collector can be static or mobile. Using a mobile data collector can extend network lifetime and can be used to collect sensor data in hardly accessible locations, partitioned networks, and delay-tolerant networks. The implementation of the mobile data collector in our study consists of combining two different platforms: the Crossbow sensor hardware and the NXT Legos. We developed an application for data collection and sensor querying support. Another important contribution is designing a semi-autonomous robot control. This hardware prototype implementation shows the benefits of using a mobile data collector in WSN. It also serves as a reference in developing future applications for mobile WSNs.

During the propagation stage in different exposures, reinforcement eventually reached negative potentials values, which suggest mass transfer limitations. So far these specimens show no visual signs of corrosion such as cracks or corrosion products with one exception; where corrosion products have reached the surface. Moreover, the apparent corrosion rate values obtained suggest high corrosion rate. No crack appearance so far, could be explained by the high porosity of the specimens; the corrosion products are filling these pores. It is speculated that although, there might be mass transfer limitations present, the current demanded by the anode is being balanced by a larger cathode area due to macrocell effects, since the high moisture conditions likely reduced the concrete resistivity and increased the throwing power.
