Show moreAssessment is frequently cited within the student affairs literature as a way of continuously improving programs, services, and events (Henning & Roberts, 2016; Upcraft & Schuh, 1996). However, the data collected through assessment is infrequently used to improve student affairs offerings due to practitioners’ fear, practitioner’s lack of training, a lack of leadership within the division or university, or an emphasis on assessment as a method of reporting results rather than improving offerings, such as programs, services, initiatives, or events (Cox et al., 2017; Fuller & Lane, 2017). In the limited published studies about how student affairs professionals use assessment data, many professionals admit they do not have a plan to use their assessment data and only a small number have a plan to use their assessment data to make changes (Beshara-Blauth, 2018; Cox et al., 2017; McCaul, 2015; Parnell et al., 2018; Ridgeway, 2014). The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how student affairs directors who have been identified as exemplars use their assessment data to make changes. The research questions for the study were: 1) How do student affair directors use assessment data in their role to make changes? 2) How do student affairs directors learn to use their data to make changes? And, 3) What influences student affairs directors to use their data to make changes?

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of inter-campus relations by mid-level student affairs administrators of both main campuses and branch campuses, with a focus on a specific population from 6 of one state's public, 4-year or above multicampus universities. The study examined the relationships that exist between the administrators' perceptions and the variables gleaned from their environment and positions. This research study focused on the branch or regional campuses of 6 of the 11 4-year or above public universities of the state ofFlorida. A convenient, purposeful sample of mid-level administrators, heads of departments designated as student affairs, at Florida university branch campuses and their counterparts on the main university campuses constituted the population for this study. This study discovered significant differences in perceptions of the main campus and branch campus student affairs administrators as they related to the four domains. Campus location was the most significant factor in predicting the perceptions of the respondents. Significant differences were found on issues of respect; communication; authority over budget, staffing, decision making and policy setting.

The lived experiences of this unique group have been ignored in existing empirical literature. A particular focus of this research was to gain a better understanding of how Latino/a SSAOs experience and respond to what they perceive as racism, if any, and/or other forms of discrimination during this experience. The theoretical lens used in this research study was Critical Race Theory (CRT).

Show moreThe purpose of this collective case study was to discover the decision-making processes used by senior student affairs officers when making wicked decisions related to the retention of specialized, at-risk student populations. Wicked decisions are complex, resistant to resolutions, lead to other problems, and are essentially unique. In this study, decisions related to retention of Black males; students with mental health issues; and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer student retention fall within the wicked problem category and were the focus of this study. These decisions are usually the responsibility of divisions of student affairs in higher education settings and the senior student affairs officer. Hence, the senior student affairs officer is tasked with making responsible and effective decisions that foster the success of all students. This dissertation focused on the decision-making processes, practices, and procedures student affairs officers use to support the retention of select special populations served in higher education.

Show moreAccording to higher education preparation standards, students who complete master’s preparation programs in student affairs should not only be acquiring skills and knowledge, they should be socialized into the field of student affairs Master’s level preparation programs in college student personnel or higher education leadership are often coupled with a graduate assistantship so that students are able to obtain valuable theory-to-practice experience This additional experience becomes complementary to the work the graduate student is doing in the classroom and thus becomes a practical learning opportunity After completing a preparation program, a former master’s student will most likely move into an entry-level position in student affairs, such as residence hall director, student activities coordinator, judicial affairs coordinator, or a fraternity/sorority coordinator However, despite this common career pathway, there has been limited research regarding the role a student affairs graduate assistantship plays in assisting students in their socialization and transition into the field and how this prepares these new student affairs professionals for their first position post-master’s degree Thirteen new professionals in student affairs who graduated from two preparation programs in the southeastern region of the United States participated in this basic interpretive qualitative study The purpose of this basic interpretive qualitative study was to examine and describe the experience of new student affairs professionals who held a graduate assistantship in student affairs during their graduate preparation program and the role, if any, the graduate assistantship played in their perceptions of preparedness Based on the findings of this study, the graduate assistantship in student affairs indeed plays a role in the perceptions of preparedness of these new professionals The overarching themes that emerged using Schlossberg’s (1984) transition theory as the analytical lens were mentorship, hands-on experience, peer interactions, and financial enticement The findings from this study align with and expand upon the existing student affairs literature, and provide awareness to student affairs practitioners and higher education leadership faculty on how to best support new professionals as they transition into the field of student affairs

Show moreMany changes are occurring in community colleges offering baccalaureate degrees across the nation, especially in the state of Florida where 24 of 28 colleges in the Florida College System are offering baccalaureate degrees. The impact of these institutions shifting their missions from associate to baccalaureate degree offerings is unknown on a key area of the college - Student Affairs. The purpose of this study was to describe and document the perceived changes in and lessons learned about Student Affairs programs at two large, multi-campus colleges in the Florida College System offering Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) and Bachelor of Science (BS) programs. The primary sources of data collected for this study were from 27 interviews with college administrators and staff and from 22 documents. District and campus-based administrators were selected based on their influence over, or knowledge of, Student Affairs programming at all degree levels and/or specifically at the baccalaureate degree level. Professional and support staff members were selected based on their direct involvement with the delivery or support of Student Affairs programs for baccalaureate students. The five major findings, based on a cross-case analysis, were (a) a focus on operations, (b) struggling with philosophical directions, (c) changes occurring in personnel and operational processes, (d) no change in several areas, and (e) lessons learned in cultural shift. This study concluded that the 2+2 admissions model is confusing to students, and it does not always allow for seamless financial aid coverage, which may be creating "leakages" in the community college baccalaureate (CCB) student success pipeline. Additional staff and resources are needed in the areas of admissions, recruitment, and advising. Several new and/or revised operational processes took place in the areas of admissions, recruitment, registration and records, and financial aid. Although student development theories still are seen as an important foundation of Student Affairs work, each college was struggling with their philosophical directions as a CCB institution. Finally, a majority of participants expressed a resistance to the change of becoming a CCB institution, not understanding if they still were a community college or if they were moving closer to becoming a 4-year university.
