Show moreDespite the historical norm that businesses should refrain from making public political statements for fear of losing customers, recent history has shown an increase in firms wading into controversial sociopolitical topics. As politics become increasingly pervasive in everyday life, consumers, investors, employees, and the general public expect firms to engage in political topics and make their positions clear. However, the considerations and processes firms undertake in deciding whether to take political stands are largely unstudied. This study examines the role of firm executives’ ideologies on their propensity to engage in corporate sociopolitical activism (CSA). Further, I examine how the ideologies of organizational, social, and capital market stakeholders also influence the decision to engage in CSA as executives weigh the desires and expectations of key stakeholders. Using stakeholder theory, I argue that CEOs and top management teams (TMTs) are responsive to the ideological leanings of multiple stakeholder groups, while also considering their own political opinions. Studying a random sample of 139 public firms, I find that CEO and TMT ideologies, on their own, are not reliable predictors of firm CSA. Firms are more likely to engage in CSA when the CEO’s ideology is aligned with that of employees or the region surrounding the firm headquarters. I also find that the volatility of the firm’s stock price reduces the propensity toward CSA, suggesting that the potential for adverse impacts on firm value can blunt firms’ CSA efforts. Further, I find that firm factors, such as B2B vs B2C markets, firm size, and firm reputation also predict the likelihood of CSA. The results have theoretical implications by adding to the nascent body of CSA literature, as well as managerial implications for perceptions of the business environment and political influences.

Show moreThis represents an analysis of the inter-relationship between political beliefs and two distinct types of political actions. Data were gathered from a random sample of college students and nine hypotheses were tested using tabular and regression analysis. It was found that a direct relationship does exist between conventional political beliefs and conventional political actions, and the presence of an inverse relationship between conventional political beliefs and non-conventional political actions was also detected. In both cases, an individual's predisposition toward political change was found to have significant effect upon the above stated relationships. It was concluded that attitudes toward political change constitutes an integral part of the relationship that exists between political beliefs and political actions.

Show moreThe role of the Intellectual in Latin America has been marked by his/her political activism. Whether engaging in nation-building like Sarmiento or Marti; or fighting against corruption and tyranny, like Vargas Llosa or the group of Chilean intellectuals who helped bring democracy back to Chile, intellectuals in Latin America leave the relative isolation of the academic world to enter the political arena. This doctoral work, divided in two parts (an academic essay and a novel), explores the struggle of intellectuals, in particular writers, who are required to function as high level politicians due to structural weaknesses in the political systems of their countries. I argue that Latin American intellectuals feel compelled to serve as politicians to fill in the void left by traditional political parties. Among the reasons I cite to support my claim are inefficient political institutions; government corruption; a weak state unable to support the necessary requirements for democracy; and popular demand, all of which call for public intellectuals to step up to the plate and amend the "perceived" prevailing political chaos. The first part of the dissertation, Public Intellectuals in Latin America: Writers and Politics, compares the achievements of intellectuals in Europe, China and the United States with that of their Latin American counterparts. The second contains an in-depth analysis of Latin American intellectuals focusing on three case studies: Sarmiento, Vargas Llosa and the group of Chilean intellectuals who were key in the transition to democracy in Chile. To round up the discussion, I include an interview with two modern day intellectuals: Dr. Eduardo Gamarra, a political analyst and Dr. Victor Bulmer-Thomas, director of the Royal Institute of Foreign Affairs. The second part, Quetzalcoatl's Feathers, is a satirical work of fiction conceived as a mordant attack on stereotypes. Set in a fictional community of English-speaking Ixil Indians (inhabiting a remote area of the Guatemalan Highlands) the novel addresses issues of ethnicity, cultural imperialism and bilingualism, as it illustrates the misadventures of two misguided, if well intentioned, fictional intellectuals bent on bringing prosperity (with careless disregard for the human cost) to their marginalized community.

Show moreThroughout his presidency, Nixon enacted several policies on behalf of young people, such as draft reform, enfranchisement for persons aged 18--20, employment plans, school desegregation, and a variety of forums for them to voice their opinion in government. Young people had attained an important political voice as their demonstrations frequently illustrated. Nixon reacted to their concerns, and, with his initiatives, undercut the legitimacy of street protests as an acceptable means to influence government. His policies, however, were often coupled with negative actions, including angry rhetoric and clandestine operations toward the antiwar movement and cynical statements about young people in private conversations. All of these activities created a mixed legacy of lasting policy advances and negative politics. Nixon continued to influence young people in a complex and contradictory manner throughout the remainder of his life in both revealing discussions he held with them and by hindering access to his presidential materials.

In comparing the British protests at the London School of Economics and Essex University to those of the Free University of Berlin, the University of Nanterre and the Sorbonne in France, and Columbia University and the University of California in the United States, it becomes clear that this is simply not the case. While there were some similarities to the protests, the differences were significant enough to refute the imitative claim. Also, in many cases, Britain's students were more successful in attaining their goals than were students in other nations.

Show moreIn 1993, a group of unionized bedside nurses took control of their state nursing association. In 1995, they disenfranchised themselves from the American Nurses Association, which historically had billed itself as - THE voice of the profession of nursing. This study utilizes a case study format to look at who they are, what their intentions are, and what their vision is for the future of the profession. Twenty questions were submitted to key participants identified by the California Nurses Association (CNA). The questions were organized into three main areas: the period leading up to the disenfranchisement, the period of growth after the takeover up until the historic passage of the ratio laws and whistle blower protection, and the period after the passage of the laws wherein the association began a national movement. This movement continues to evolve, and in December, 2009, the CNA (now the National Nurses United) became the largest nursing organization in the country. As the title of the study implies, one intention of the study is to look at the implications for the profession of nursing and the inevitable political implications for the national healthcare debate. Another purpose is to introduce this group to the academic and professional nursing communities, which until now have largely ignored them. Still another purpose is to lay out a blueprint for other state nursing associations who may wish to empower themselves, to analyze the process by which this group has grown to political prominence. No other nursing association has been able to duplicate their political success. Finally, the study raises many crucial questions which nursing academics and nursing leaders must address if nursing is going to able to utilize our only real political power, the power of numbers. Uniting the field, or at least growing the association to significant numerical strength, is the only way nursing can become an equal partner in the national healthcare debate.
