Show moreKindergartners, grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 children, and adult college students participated in a two-year longitudinal study of eyewitness memory, recall, and suggestibility with one- and two-year assessment periods additionally, kindergartners and adults participated in a short-term repeated trials free recall study. Delays varied from a few minutes (in the short-term repeated free recall trial) to two years in the longitudinal study. Subjects were asked free-recall (open ended), unbiased cued recall, and specifically suggestive (leading) questions about the event they had observed as well as their involvement in the experiment at the initial phase one or two years before. Longer delays resulted in lower levels of correct free recall which varied positively with age. Levels of incorrect free recall were at floor for all trials. With longer delays, unbiased cued-recall questions resulted in higher levels of incorrect responses. Differential levels of correct free recall were found for different categories of items, with the central (most legally important) items being recalled correctly by all age groups more often than the less central items. Kindergarten and second grade children were the most influenced by leading questions and were found to be most influenced by the type question (correctly or incorrectly suggestive) posed first. Responses by kindergartners to later questions about the same items were influenced by the leading nature of the initial question with kindergarten and second grade children responding incorrectly to the follow-up questions based upon their answers to the initial questions. The order of presentation effect was enhanced for questions suggesting incorrect responses. The longer delays diminished the age effects of leading questions between the older children and adults. Examination of short-term delay repeated recall trials disclosed that adults produced higher percentages of correct free recall with each subsequent trial, while the kindergarten children did not. Collapsed across grade, subjects who increased their levels of correct free recall following their unbiased cued-recall trial generally remained at that higher level for the remaining free-recall trials. Small hypermnesia effects were found for certain treatment groups. Results are discussed in terms of information processing and fuzzy-trace theories.

Show morePurpose. This study was conducted to assess the reactions of Florida school administrators to the various components of the Management Training Act of 1981. Procedure. A thorough literature search was undertaken to determine more precisely those characteristics indicative of management training in education. A twenty-five item questionnaire was developed which assessed the reactions of participants in the Florida Academy for School Leaders' (FASL) management institutes. A total of one hundred eighty-five Florida administrators participated in the study. Florida school administrators approved of the value and content of the FASL institutes, and indicated that more effective and relevant presentations would result from a team of presenters representing different levels within the state. On-the-job training received a strong recommendation as the most valuable method of training. They also indicated a need for local management training programs. Selection committees were endorsed by the administrators. Survey participants highly supported competency-based administrative certification and compensation for administrators who demonstrate "high performing competencies." Two research hypotheses were formulated. Analysis of the data received indicated no significant difference among the reactions of Florida school administrators by role to the various components of the Management Training Act of 1981. The second null hypothesis was rejected as the analysis of the data indicated significant differences among the reactions of Florida school administrators by state region to the various components of the law. The variables that showed significant differences were knowledge of FASL institutes, selection, certification, and compensation. Among the recommendations for further research was a recognition of the need for a study of current participants of the FASL institutes and their relationship to the reactions of the first participants.

Show moreThe sovereignty of the Spratly Islands has been disputed since the early 1900's. Since the 1970's, the dispute has taken on greater significance in world politics due to the possibility of oil reserves. The fact that China has become the regional hegemon in Southeast Asia has made the dispute more important. If China takes over the archipelago, world politics would be altered as China would in effect turn the South China Sea into a Chinese Lake. There have been many resolutions proposed in order to eliminate the conflict. However, most authors have focused on peaceful resolutions such as joint development or arbitration. The problem is that the relations between the claimants is not conducive to these resolutions. The establishment of a security community known as military prevention is one solution that has not been explored. It is a resolution to the conflict that would include demilitarization. It is this option that appears to be likely in lieu of the tensions in the region.

Show moreLandmines have inflicted an insurmountable amount of physical and psychological harm, inhibiting social and economic development far after the conflict has ended. In an effort to create a world free of the weapon, a campaign to ban landmines was launched by non-governmental organizations. The Mine Ban Convention entered into force in 1999, requiring nation-states to immediately ban the use, production and transfer of anti-personnel landmines (APLs), destroy stockpiles within four years and remove landmines already planted within ten years. This study examines the level of legal compliance with the Mine Ban Convention. An empirical analysis is conducted using a data base constructed from reports published by the Landmine Monitor. This study finds that the treaty is a successful work in progress with a majority of Parties in compliance; 44 million stockpiled APLs have been destroyed and eleven states have completed mine clearance. 170 million stockpiled APLs and countless emplaced mines remain, indicating the world is still far from the goal of a mine-free world.

- The Effects of Labor Legislation on the Panamanian Construction Industry.
- Creator
- Cabal, Tomas Antonio, Florida Atlantic University, Sklar, Alexander
- Abstract/Description
-
The introduction in 1971 of radical changes in existing labor laws had tremendous effects on the Panamanian construction industry. We have attempted to show these effects and what it signified to the construction industry. The companies involved had to make substantial adjustments to deal with the new laws. We have tried to document these adjustments and what economic effects they had on the companies involved.

Show moreIn this qualitative study, 21 Title IX federal court cases between 2000–2022 were examined. The purpose of this analysis was to explore how the changes in Title IX guidance across President George W. Bush (R), President Barack Obama (D), and President Donald Trump (R) administrations have impacted higher education institutional liability lawsuits. Guided by content analysis and the power-conscious framework, three research questions were asked: (1) How have the Title IX policy changes under the Bush, Obama, and Trump U.S. presidential administrations impacted higher education institutional liability lawsuits? (2) What specific Title IX requirements within the Bush, Obama, and Trump U.S. presidential administrations are higher education institutions being held liable for violating? (3) How effective is the Title IX guidance under the Bush, Obama, and Trump U.S. presidential administrations at reducing institutional liability? Four themes emerged from this study: (1) Increase in Title IX lawsuits, (2) Violation of Presidential Guidance Does Not Mean Violation of Title IX, (3) Previous Court Cases, (4) Guidance with More Legal Protocol Can Reduce Title IX Liability. This content analysis concluded that higher education institutions should incorporate legal standards into their Title IX process and work to be compliant with federal law and the guidance provided by the Department of Education. Furthermore, this study demonstrates the different types and forms of power that change over a period of time. Based upon these conclusions, recommendations were made for higher education institutions and the U.S. Department of Education to create policies that would be fair and equitable to the involved parties while also reducing institutional liability.
