Show moreTrip-based data can provide important information about travel patterns and travel characteristics of people. To handle this type of transportation movement data in GIS (Geographic Information Systems), a new data model is needed to incorporate different aspects of a transportation movement with its spatial properties. From the study presented in this thesis, an event-based data model for transportation movement data was developed with the concepts of object orientation, feature-based approach, and relative referencing methods. The implementation of this new data model with a prototype system shows the capability of this data model in handling transportation movement data. This data model has also improved the information retrieval ability provided by the current GIS data models.

To identify the types of spatial analysis which are desirable and appropriate to GIS, this thesis proposes a systematic 'building-blocks' approach for the identification of data models and spatial analytical tools to develop a flexible and powerful GIS spatial analysis and modeling environment. The building-blocks approach will be demonstrated in this thesis by examining a ground water flow model in MODFLOW, an SDA package designed specifically for this purpose. Procedures in MODFLOW will be disassembled into their primitive component functions, or building-blocks, which will then be sought out in ARC/INFO, representing a modern, general-purpose GIS. In the process, the levels of integration between GIS and SDA will be encountered and discussed.

Show moreThis dissertation presents the results of research that led to the development of a complete, fully functional, image search and retrieval system with relevance feedback capabilities, called MUSE (MUltimedia SEarch and Retrieval Using Relevance Feedback). Two different models for searching for a target image using relevance feedback have been proposed, implemented, and tested. The first model uses a color-based feature vector and employs a Bayesian learning algorithm that updates the probability of each image in the database being the target based on the user's actions. The second model uses cluster analysis techniques, a combination of color-, texture-, and edge(shape)-based features, and a novel approach to learning the user's goals and the relevance of each feature for a particular search. Both models follow a purely content-based image retrieval paradigm. The search process is based exclusively on image contents automatically extracted during the (off-line) feature extraction stage. Moreover, they minimize the number and complexity of required user's actions, in contrast with the complexity of the underlying search and retrieval engine. Results of experiments show that both models exhibit good performance for moderate-size, unconstrained databases and that a combination of the two outperforms any of them individually, which is encouraging. In the process of developing this dissertation, we also implemented and tested several image features and similarity measurement combinations. The result of these tests---performed under the query-by-example (QBE) paradigm---served as a reference in the choice of which features to use in the relevance feedback mode and confirmed the difficulty in encoding the understanding of image similarity into a combination of features and distances without human assistance. Most of the code written during the development of this dissertation has been encapsulated into a multifunctional prototype that combines image searching (with or without an example), browsing, and viewing capabilities and serves as a framework for future research in the subject.

The Lake Okeechobee Ecosystem Study (LOES) a five-year study, conducted by SFWMD to collect information about water quality and other ecological factors in the Lake Okeechobee area, is one of the many projects that the SFWMD is involved in for the restoration of Florida's ecosystem. The study resulted in a large volume of information being compiled by scientists into files of different formats. Florida Atlantic University (FAU) undertook the task of restructuring the database and designing and implementing the Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) to support this ecological system. As part of an earlier project, an object model was designed to standardize the files that also helped in the creation of a relational database to store the information. A goal of the current project was to design GUIs that could be used without difficulty, by persons that may or may not be database technology familiar. This thesis describes and analyzes the design and implementation of the GUIs. It focuses on the two types of interfaces implemented, namely the Query and Administrative forms. The implementation of the GUIs were completed and tested and deployed at SFWMD.

Show moreA Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system is a mechanism intended to retrieve a particular image from a large image repository without resorting to any additional information about the image. Query-by-example (QBE) is a technique used by CBIR systems where an image is retrieved from the database based on an example given by the user. The effectiveness of a CBIR system can be measured by two main indicators: how close the retrieved results are to the desired image and how fast we got those results. In this thesis, we implement some classical image processing operations in order to improve the average rank of the desired image, and we also implement two object recognition techniques to improve the subjective quality of the best ranked images. Results of experiments show that the proposed system outperforms an equivalent CBIR system in QBE mode, both from the point of view of precision as well as recall.

Show moreSoftware development for ecological data systems is concentrated in the description, modeling, and standardization of large amounts of ecological data. Ecological data assembled in many formats is very difficult to reuse. This thesis develops a database model that supports the storage of heterogeneous data in standardized formats. Ecological data standardization is solved with the specification of a structure conversion system. Because input formats cannot be predicted, a scientific data description language was created to control the execution of the conversion system. System analysis is based on interviews with South Florida Water Management District scientists conducting ecosystem research, and ecological data collected at Lake Okeechobee, Florida, during a five-year study. Object-oriented and structural methods were used for analysis. Development is complemented with an introduction to user interfaces.

The proposed system is Web-based; therefore it has high accessibility and availability. The cloud computing based architecture is used which will allow consumers to address the challenge of sharing medical data. PHR would provide a complete and accurate summary of the health and medical history of an individual by gathering data from many sources. This would make information accessible online to anyone who has the necessary electronic credentials to view the information.

The focus of the thesis is on a geographic information system as a problem solving tool . The empirical analysis deals with middle school student projections and assignments in Broward County, Florida. Chapter I of the thesis defines the nature of a geographic information system. Chapter II explains the development of a geographic information system for Broward County schools. Chapter III applies the geographic information system for projecting student enrollment and develops an application for school boundary determination. Chapter IV details the results of a linear programming approach to school boundary analysis. The concluding chapter discusses advantages and disadvantages of the geographic information system and examines additional areas of research.

A conceptual model was developed and subsequently was analyzed in relation to Boykin's and Schoenhofer's (1993) Nursing as Caring Theory. It was discovered that staff nurses respect a nurse manager when she participates in direct nursing care, provides for the overall needs of the unit by negotiating with administrators, and nurtures nurses through listening to, encouraging, supporting and role modeling. Recommendations for nursing administration, practice, education and research are presented.

Access to all this information and appropriate exchange of data makes the job of health providers more effective, however, the number of people that can potentially access this information increases by orders of magnitude. Private health information is not well protected. We present guidelines for security models for medical information systems. First, we model the structure of the medical information in the form of object-oriented patterns. Second, we study models and patterns in use today and compare them to our patterns. Next we define requirements necessary for controlling access, and describe the common policies and restrictions of security models for medical applications. We present some of the medical record access control restrictions directly in a conceptual model of the medical information.
