Show moreThe objectives of this research as deliberated in this dissertation are two-folded: (i) To study the nonlinear activity in the neural complex (real and artificial) and (ii) to analyze the learning processe(s) pertinent to an artificial neural network in the information-theoretic plane using cross-entropy error-metrics. The research efforts envisaged enclave the following specific tasks: (i) Obtaining a general solution for the Bernoulli-Riccati equation to represent a single parameter family of S-shaped (sigmoidal) curves depicting the nonlinear activity in the neural network. (ii) Analysis of the logistic growth of output versus input values in the neural complex (real and artificial) under the consideration that the boundaries of the sets constituting the input and output entities are crisp and/or fuzzy. (iii) Construction of a set of cross-entropy error-metrics (known as Csiszar's measures) deduced in terms of the parameters pertinent to a perceptron topology and elucidation of their relative effectiveness in training the network optimally towards convergence. (iv) Presenting the methods of symmetrizing and balancing the aforesaid error-entropy measures (in the information-theoretic plane) so as to make them usable as error-metrics in the test domain. (v) Description and analysis of the dynamics of neural learning process in the information-theoretic plane for both crisp and fuzzy attributes of input values. Relevant to these topics portraying the studies on nonlinear activity and cross-entropy considerations vis-a-vis neural networks, newer and/or exploratory inferences are made, logical conclusions are enumerated and relative discussions are presented along with the scope for future research to be pursued.

Along with this has come an increased ability and need for the sharing of geographic data. This thesis will investigate the various means currently available to facilitate data sharing, including the availability of geographic data distributed throughout the Internet. A number of World Wide Web sites providing geographic data were chosen as a representative cross section of the current functionality available on the Internet. This document is intended to be used as a guide for more effective implementation of World Wide Web "GIS" sites and aid in conceptualizing the Internet as a Societal GIS.

Show moreI investigate whether or not a firm’s social network size (also known as social capital) impacts the quality of its information environment. Following social capital theory, I posit three potential channels that help bring an informational advantage to wellconnected firms. First, well-connected firms are likely to have timely access to a broader set of information that affords them the opportunity to disclose this information. Second, a social network fosters trust among social peers, which promotes the transfer of more accurate information within that network. Third, well-connected executives and directors have greater reputational capital at stake, which may encourage them to provide accurate information to the market. I provide evidence that well-connected firms have higher quality information environments. I further document that the beneficial impact of the firm’s social network size on the quality of the firm’s information environment is higher for complex firms. I also find that the beneficial effect of the firm’s social ties on the quality of the firm’s information environment is greater when the firm’s connections are in the same industry or are top executives or are industry leaders or are financiers in the capital markets. My study extends existing social network literature by investigating whether firm’s social connections to outside executives and directors impact the quality of the firm’s information environment. My paper focuses on the networking skills of the executives and directors and extends the literature on how executives’ and directors’ personal characteristics are important. Additionally, I respond to the call by Engelberg et al. (2013) to identify the mechanism by which a CEO’s network creates value to the firm and well-connected CEOs get paid higher compensation. This study also contributes to a growing debate in social network literature between social capital theory and agency theory. Finally, my study is important to the regulators and standard setters as they can provide further evidence on the impact of non-financial information on the information quality surrounding the firm.

Show moreEducational leadership goes beyond the boundaries of the classroom; skills needed for talent development professionals in business closely align with those needed in traditional educational leadership positions as both are responsible for the development and growth of others. Traditionally, the role of professional membership associations or organizations such as the Association for Talent Development (ATD, formerly known as the American Society for Training and Development), the group dedicated to individuals in the field of workplace learning and development, is to provide learning opportunities, set standards, identify best practices in their respective fields, and allow members to network with other professionals who share their interests. However, with the rampant increase in the use of technology and social networking, individuals are now able to access a vast majority of information for free online via tools such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Google, and YouTube. Where has this left organizations that typically charged for access to this type of information in the past? Surveys and interviews were conducted with ATD members in this mixed-methods study to answer the following research questions: 1. What are the perceptions of Association for Talent Development (ATD) members regarding the effect of technology-based informal learning on the role of ATD? 2. How do ATD members utilize technology for informal learning? 3. Are there factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, educational level, or length of time in the field that predict a member's likelihood to utilize technology for informal learning? 4. Are there certain ATD competency areas for which informal learning is preferred over non-formal or formal learning? The significance of the study includes the identification of how the Association for Talent Development (ATD, formerly ASTD) can continue to support professionals in our constantly evolving te chnological society as well as advancing the field by contributing research connecting informal learning with technology to membership organization roles.

Show moreThis thesis addresses a method to deduce the statistical bounds associated with the cell-transfer delay variations (CDVs) encountered by the cells of MPEG traffic, transmitted in the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. This study focuses on: (1) Estimating CDV arising from multiplexing/switching for both constant bit rate (CBR) and variable bit rate (VBR) traffics via priority allocation based simulations. (2) Developing an information-theoretics based technique to get an insight of the combined BER-induced and multiplexing/switching-induced CDVs in ATM networks. Algorithms pertinent to CDV statistics are derived and the lower and upper bounds of the statistics are obtained via simulations in respect of CBR and VBR traffics. Ascertaining these bounds is useful in the cell admission control (CAC) strategies adopted in ATM transmissions. Inferential remarks indicating the effects of traffic parameters (such as bandwidth, burstiness etc.) on the values of the statistical bounds are presented, and scope for further work are presented.

Show moreThe objective of this research is to determine the macroscopic behavior of packet transit-times across the global Internet cloud using an artificial neural network (ANN). Specifically, the problem addressed here refers to using a "fast-convergent" ANN for the purpose indicated. The underlying principle of fast-convergence is that, the data presented in training and prediction modes of the ANN is in the entropy (information-theoretic) domain, and the associated annealing process is "tuned" to adopt only the useful information content and discard the posentropy part of the data presented. To demonstrate the efficacy of the research pursued, a feedforward ANN structure is developed and the necessary transformations required to convert the input data from the parametric-domain to the entropy-domain (and a corresponding inverse transformation) are followed so as to retrieve the output in parametric-domain. The fast-convergent or fast-computing ANN (FC-ANN) developed is deployed to predict the packet-transit performance across the Internet. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Travel industry applications have a large market potential on the Internet. Because of the geographical relationships of locations and functions in the travel industry, the use of cartography and GIS can be very beneficial to user interfaces of these applications. This paper examines functions, inputs, and user interface of current airline reservation web sites, and looks at some current examples of GIS use on the Internet. It then discusses ways to improve the user interface design of airline reservation web sites using GIS to create more powerful and easy-to-use applications that also incorporate other aspects of the travel industry.

Among various searching techniques, semantic-based searching has drawn significant attention recently. Gnutella-like efficient searching system (GES) [29] is such a system. GES derives node vector , a semantic summary of all documents on a node based on vector space model (VSM). The node-based topology adaptation algorithm and search protocol are then discussed. However, when there are many categories of documents at each node, the node vector representation may be inaccurate. We extend the idea of GES and present a class-based search system (CSS). It makes use of a document clustering algorithm: OSKM [27] to cluster all documents on a node into several classes. Each class can be viewed as a virtual node. As a result, class vector replaces node vector and plays an important role in class-based topology adaptation and search process, which makes CSS very efficient. Our simulation demonstrates that CSS outperforms GES.

Capitalization has been shown to increase well-being when others provide appropriate responses in face-to-face interactions. To see if this effect on well-being extends to our online presence, this study utilized the social media site Facebook to observe if capitalization predicted well-being and relationship satisfaction. This study used data collected from 137 participants recruited from an undergraduate participant pool and from Amazon Mechanical Turk. Consistent with hypotheses, participants who reported receiving active and constructive responses after sharing a positive event on Facebook also reported greater personal well-being and relationship satisfaction. Although future experimental research is needed to establish causality, the current results suggest that the ways in which friends respond to social media posts are associated with personal and relationship well-being.

Show moreInternational development literature suggests that Internet marketing has the potential to play an important role in rural development. Despite the abundant theoretical support for incorporating Internet marketing into development strategies, there is little empirical evidence regarding whether Internet marketing actually generates development. This thesis helps fill this gap in the literature by investigating whether one Internet marketing application associated with development, competitive-online auctions (COAs), contributes to growth and poverty reduction. An analysis of price premiums earned in Latin American specialty coffee auctions and interviews with participating coffee farmers suggest that this application's strength lies in its ability to catalyze development; it provides the foundation from which farmers can pursue above-market prices, access new markets, and improve local living conditions. However, evidence also emphasizes that COAs do not inevitably advance development goals because their ability to do so is contingent on external factors, including the actions taken by individual farmers.

Show moreA self-adaptive software is developed to predict the stock market. It’s Stock Prediction Engine functions autonomously when its skill-set suffices to achieve its goal, and it includes human-in-the-loop when it recognizes conditions benefiting from more complex, expert human intervention. Key to the system is a module that decides of human participation. It works by monitoring three mental states unobtrusively and in real time with Electroencephalography (EEG). The mental states are drawn from the Opportunity-Willingness-Capability (OWC) model. This research demonstrates that the three mental states are predictive of whether the Human Computer Interaction System functions better autonomously (human with low scores on opportunity and/or willingness, capability) or with the human-in-the-loop, with willingness carrying the largest predictive power. This transdisciplinary software engineering research exemplifies the next step of self-adaptive systems in which human and computer benefit from optimized autonomous and cooperative interactions, and in which neural inputs allow for unobtrusive pre-interactions.

Show moreThe focus of this thesis is to statistically model violent crime rates against population over the years 1960-2009 for the United States. We approach this question as to be of interest since the trend of population for individual states follows different patterns. We propose here a method which employs cubic spline regression modeling. First we introduce a minimum/maximum algorithm that will identify potential knots. Then we employ least squares estimation to find potential regression coefficients based upon the cubic spline model and the knots chosen by the minimum/maximum algorithm. We then utilize the best subsets regression method to aid in model selection in which we find the minimum value of the Bayesian Information Criteria. Finally, we preent the R2adj as a measure of overall goodness of fit of our selected model. We have found among the fifty states and Washington D.C., 42 out of 51 showed an R2adj value that was greater than 90%. We also present an overall model of the United States. Also, we show additional applications our algorithm for data which show a non linear association. It is hoped that our method can serve as a unified model for violent crime rate over future years.

The transcribed interview data were coded, concepts were identified, and the conceptual unit of meaning emerged. A conceptual model was developed and subsequently was analyzed in relation to Boykin's and Schoenhofer's (1993) Nursing as Caring Theory. It was discovered that staff nurses respect a nurse manager when she participates in direct nursing care, provides for the overall needs of the unit by negotiating with administrators, and nurtures nurses through listening to, encouraging, supporting and role modeling. Recommendations for nursing administration, practice, education and research are presented.

Access to all this information and appropriate exchange of data makes the job of health providers more effective, however, the number of people that can potentially access this information increases by orders of magnitude. Private health information is not well protected. We present guidelines for security models for medical information systems. First, we model the structure of the medical information in the form of object-oriented patterns. Second, we study models and patterns in use today and compare them to our patterns. Next we define requirements necessary for controlling access, and describe the common policies and restrictions of security models for medical applications. We present some of the medical record access control restrictions directly in a conceptual model of the medical information.
