GIS algorithms are used to produce time area diagrams with time of concentration formula. These methods are compared to a simulation in HEC-HMS with the dimensionless TAD equation and the ModClark Method. Each GIS method is used to estimate the hydrograph for a measured rainfall event. The accuracy of each of the methods is explored using the HEC objective function, mean squared error, and other statistical measures of correlation. Advantages and limitations of the GIS methodologies are examined and topics of further study are suggested.

Show moreThis work aimed at aiding academic and CRM professionals in archaeology by developing a predictive model of prehistoric sites on the southeastern coast of Cuba. The variables in this model were identified by previous archaeological research at Guantâanamo Bay Naval Station. Both GIS analysis and weights of evidence testing were conducted on the model. The results of the GIS and statistical analysis allowed for refinement of the model. Cuba is central to understanding the prehistoric settlement of the Caribbean. The model explored not only site occurrence and environmental correlations, but also looked at intersite correlations. It was determined that site occurrences are strongly linked to low elevation, proximity to other sites, south-facing areas, mangroves, and geologic formations. This model may add to the understanding of the prehistoric settling of Cuba, as well as the interactions between native groups.

Show moreAt present the current trip generation models used in the state of Florida to derive residential trip generation rates take into account three variables, dwelling type, auto ownership and household size. It is hoped that by examining geographic location, improvements can be made to the present Florida Standard Urban Transportation Modeling Structure (FSUTMS). To analyze the impact of geographic location, GIS technology will be used. GIS will aid the study in several ways. It will be used to identify urban centers and major highways within the study area and once this is accomplished, GIS will be used to create zones around the selected urban centers and the major highways. Finally GIS will be used to prepare the survey data for statistical analysis. In addition to looking at geographic location, the study will also examine whether certain lifestyle variables can influence residential trip rates within the study area. Throughout this study it is hoped that the predictive power of the Florida Standard Urban Transportation Modeling Structure can be improved.

Overall brain topography can indicate when major reorganizational shifts in brain structure happened in our evolutionalry history, and these shifts may indicate major shifts in cognition and behavior. Endocasts are one of the sole sources of information about extinct hominin brains ; they reproduce details of the brain's external morphology. Analysis of endocast morphology has never been done using GIS methodology. The use of GIS helps to overcome previous obstacles in regards to endocast analysis. Since this methodology is new, this research focuses on only one species, Homo sapiens and the area of focus is narrowed to the frontal lobe, specifically Broca's cap. This area is associated with speech in humans and is therefore of evolutionary significance. The variability in lateralization of this feature was quantified.

Software to manage the Storm Water Drainage Facilities for the Utilities Department of the Village of Tequesta, Florida. GeoMedia Professional was chosen, for its convenient user interface and its compatibility with other G.I.S. software such as ArcView or ARC/INFO. The GIS system displays the information in a map with different layers showing features such as drains or sewers. Subsystems were used to define the Levels of Standards (LOS) for the drainage system of the village. The data was collected from different sources such as Palm Beach County, or the property appraisers. The features are linked to databases, where the user can interface with the system and analyze the storm water network of the village. In the end, an interactive map was created with all the data, which provided a sufficient management tool for the Utilities Department.

This effort included a mapping project that would include all detectable vegetation within the expanding littoral zone. There were several problems associated with remote sensing aspects of this project. These problems resulted in inaccurate classification of species and a redundancy of mapping for large areas. This thesis will review the remote sensing methods used for the mapping project, analyze the associated errors within the map product, and lastly offer an alternative approach, incorporating the use of iterative remote sensing, for mapping the vegetation of Lake Okeechobee and other areas of complex vegetation.

To handle this type of transportation movement data in GIS (Geographic Information Systems), a new data model is needed to incorporate different aspects of a transportation movement with its spatial properties. From the study presented in this thesis, an event-based data model for transportation movement data was developed with the concepts of object orientation, feature-based approach, and relative referencing methods. The implementation of this new data model with a prototype system shows the capability of this data model in handling transportation movement data. This data model has also improved the information retrieval ability provided by the current GIS data models.

To identify the types of spatial analysis which are desirable and appropriate to GIS, this thesis proposes a systematic 'building-blocks' approach for the identification of data models and spatial analytical tools to develop a flexible and powerful GIS spatial analysis and modeling environment. The building-blocks approach will be demonstrated in this thesis by examining a ground water flow model in MODFLOW, an SDA package designed specifically for this purpose. Procedures in MODFLOW will be disassembled into their primitive component functions, or building-blocks, which will then be sought out in ARC/INFO, representing a modern, general-purpose GIS. In the process, the levels of integration between GIS and SDA will be encountered and discussed.

Show moreNowadays the widespread availability of wireless networks has created an interest in using them for other purposes, such as localization of mobile devices in indoor environments because of the lack of GPS signal reception indoors. Indoor localization has received great interest recently for the many context-aware applications it could make possible. We designed and implemented an indoor localization platform for Wi-Fi nodes (such as smartphones and laptops) that identifies the building name, floor number, and room number where the user is located based on a Wi-Fi access point signal fingerprint pattern matching. We designed and evaluated a new machine learning algorithm, KRedpin, and developed a new web-services architecture for indoor localization based on J2EE technology with the Apache Tomcat web server for managing Wi-Fi signal data from the FAU WLAN. The prototype localization client application runs on Android cellphones and operates in the East Engineering building at FAU. More sophisticated classifiers have also been used to improve the localization accuracy using the Weka data mining tool.

In the case of transportation asset inventories, a significant cost and effort is spent on recording and storing the asset information. In order to reduce the time and cost involved in road corridor mapping, this paper proposes a low cost MMS (Mobile Mapping System) using an equipped laser scanner and cameras. The process of building the MMS, components and sensors involved and calibration procedures are discussed. The efficiency of this Mobile Mapping System is experimented by mounting it on a truck and golf cart. The paper also provides a framework to extract road assets both automatically and manually using stateof- the-art techniques. The efficiency of this method is compared with traditional field survey methods. Quality of collected data, data integrity and process flow are experimented with a sample asset management framework and a spatial database structure for mapping road corridor features.

Detente brought about new policy directives in the U.S. and abroad, which opened up for civilian use former Earth observation spy technology down to one meter resolution, previously considered classified and strictly used by the intelligence communities for national security. This study describes a number of new ventures in the private sector which have been formed to launch commercial high resolution systems. The satellites' technical capabilities are analyzed, and application development options for the new imagery are discussed in detail. This new remote sensing data source is also seen within the framework of the larger GeoTechnology Industry to which it belongs, and the author proposes appropriate business strategies for successful commercialization.

Show moreThe interrelatedness of archaeology, geography, and environment, in conjunction with the utilization of modern technology has become evident. This thesis employs the main principles of Environmental Archaeology while utilizing Geographic Information System technology to analyze the distribution of Paleoindian and Archaic period sites in south Florida. The following research demonstrates populations preferred certain areas to others, and environment played a considerable role in this preference, as indicated by the patterns that arose when site locations were analyzed based on environmental variables. These patterns in site locations were used to determine the most likely and least likely areas of south Florida for finding new archaeological sites. This thesis also provides an evaluation of the varions environmental and archaeological data sets used, concluding that paleoenvironmental reconstruction is a worthwhile goal, greatly enhancing modern environmental data sets used in this study.

Using geographic information systems (GIS) and current census information the county boundaries of Florida will be reconfigured in hopes of better representing the citizens of the State of Florida at the county level.

Show moreThe purpose of the proposed investigation is a multi-faceted study providing the opportunity to (a) examine the transverse Glades waterways within Broward County, Florida as trade networks during precolumbian times, (b) critically examine the importance of shark teeth as a commodity in the prehistoric commerce of south Florida, and (c) explore the utility of geographic information systems (GIS) in the resolution of the archaeological questions noted above. As suggested by the above statement, this study will focus on the dynamics involved in the distribution of shark teeth throughout archaeological sites in Broward County noting whether there are noticeable changes in the frequency of their distribution over time, or whether it is relatively constant. The study will attempt to better understand the important role of the southeast Florida transverse Glades waterways in the coast to inland commerce of shark teeth.
