This thesis focuses on factor analysis as a technique. It thus includes a survey of the various factor mode ls, their theory and mathematical development, a survey of its previous use for empirical studies in economics, and empirical tests of sensitivity of alternative factor techniques. From the results of the sensitivity test it was concluded that different factor techniques yield very similar results and that factor techniques are of value for empirical studies in economics.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to develop and explore the factor structure of the Student Engagement in Social–Emotional Learning Skills (SE-SELS) survey, a newly designed assessment that assesses students’ knowledge and use of five social–emotional learning skills (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making) aligned with the framework of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning. The SE-SELS survey includes 20 items and takes approximately 5 min to complete. Participants were 359 students in Grades 6–8 at one university-affiliated laboratory school serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The instrument was explored through exploratory factor analysis, which determined that the strengths of relationships among variables was satisfactory and that the model overall had strong internal reliability (α = .90). All items were retained for the final SE-SELS survey (.41 ≤ α ≤ .75). Items linked to the relationship skills component and the self-management component were merged to create a four-factor model, which ABSTRACT was a better fit for the data overall and retained all five components addressed by the SESELS survey. There is at present a lack of reliable and valid instruments that measure the effectiveness of interventions and student outcomes related to social–emotional learning. The SE-SELS survey can thus help school counselors and other educators to determine the impact of social–emotional learning interventions and provide baseline and growth data for students. Follow-up studies are needed to support the reliability and validity of the SE-SELS survey.

Safe drinking water is paramount to a healthy society. Close to a hundred contaminants are regulated by the government. Utilities are using chloramines to disinfect water to reduce harmful byproducts that may present themselves with the use of chlorine alone. Using chlorine and ammonia to disinfect, ammonia oxidizing bacteria can present themselves in an unsuspecting utilities distribution network.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to develop and explore the factor structure of a retrospective assessment instrument designed to identify the presence of early covert traumas in an individual’s history. Covert traumas are those which are psychosocial, and often interpersonal, in nature (Altobelli, 2017). While a deficiency in the available body of research addressing such traumas currently exists, limited research suggests that experiences of such phenomena may affect individual potential across various domains of development, functioning, health, and well-being (van der Kolk, 2014). In addition, the residual effects of such traumas may exacerbate adverse adult outcomes, such as experiences of chronic pain, proclivities towards maladaptive forms of coping, and hindrances to academic and occupational performance and achievement (Felitti et al., 1998). Furthermore, some theorists propose that the impact of such traumas, especially when compounded, may cause more emotional harm than exposure to a single overtly traumatic event (Staggs, 2014).
