A spectroscopic study of a helium-hydrogen afterglow plasma in a pulsed discharge hollow-cathode has been made to determine the energy transfer process which results in a population inversion in atomic hydrogen. Time-resolved emission measurements were made for the Balmer series in hydrogen and self-absorption measurements with lambda 3889 A (2s 3S - 3p 3P) and lambda 4650 A (2s 3sigma - 3p 3n) of helium were taken to monitor the metastable populations. Observations were made as a function of impurity concentration and as a function of helium pressure. The energy transfer from the 3S atomic metastables appears highly probable with only a minor contribution from the 3sigma molecular metastables.

The component of the human evoked potential found to be the most sensitive to stimulus deviance was the P3. Consistent with Sokolovian theory, P3 amplitude displayed a U-shaped function in which the extreme deviants produced the largest P3s, proximate deviants produced intermediate P3s and the repetitive standard produced the smallest P3s.

Normative data were collected from monolingual samples of South Florida residents for 12 Spanish/English semantic categories. Measures of typicality and familiarity, and their correlations are listed. These data afforded the predictive tools implemented in the two subsequent RT experiments. Experiments 2 and 3 evaluated the extent to which the two language systems are integrated in semantic memory. Bilingual subjects were required to respond on a two word lexical decision task whether a letter string was a word or a nonword, irrespective of language. The paradigm involved a priming procedure in varying degrees of semantic relatedness, under same- versus mixed-language conditions. Interlingual lexical facilitation effects of equal magnitude to the intralingual were demonstrated even at 100 msec SOA, indicating no cognitive cost of language code-switching. The results support a common semantic representational system subserving the bilingual lexicon.

Horizontal ocean currents deflect the plume and may create a more severe loading on the structure. During the early stages of a blowout the "starting plume" induces forces of a different magnitude on the structure. A preliminary experimental study, investigating the transient loads induced by starting plumes and the effects of currents on blowout plumes, was conducted. The results of the experiments showed that the forces involve significant fluctuations which are quite different from the average values. The normal forces induced by starting plumes were slightly greater. Horizontal currents caused an increase in the moment acting on the structure. This is of considerable importance as moments, when coupled with the situation of flooded decks and compartments, may cause the structure to sink.

Capacitance-Voltage curves were generated using the high frequency and quasistatic techniques. The energy distribution of surface states, calculated by the Castagne technique, was dependent upon exposure temperature. The total number of radiation induced surface states, NTss saturated, and was the same for both exposure temperatures. The radiation induced additional acceptor surface states with energies near the valence band. No difference was observed in the oxide charge density between samples exposed at T = 77°K and T = 298°K. The flat band voltage shift saturated at a dose of approximately 0.55 mrad(Si). A generation-recombination model is used for the oxide and interface charge build up at both temperatures, to calculate the maximum depth of radiation induced charges, d. The experimentally determined values of NTss and d are consistent with the generation-recombination model.

Show moreThe objective of this thesis is to develop a new experimental method to characterize the diffusion of water in polymer resins, based on the evolution in the volume of water droplets as a function of time. A finite element model is established to model the mass transport of water droplet through evaporation and diffusion processes. Diffusivity of water into polymer resins is then extracted by matching the volume variation of the simulated water droplet to the experimental results. Capability of this method is demonstrated by determining the diffusivity of water into void-free epoxy and epoxy samples with voids. Diffusion coefficient value obtained from this method agrees with data from conventional water immersion method. The significantly small scale of the water droplet (less than 10 microliter) allows rapid characterization of diffusivity in hours instead of months as typically required by the conventional immersion method. The method developed here provides a useful tool for rapid and effective characterization of diffusivity of water in polymer substrates and can be extended to other substances as well.

The thesis contextualizes the production of an accompanying media project, which is informed by the history of U.S migration and the media’s impact on the opinion of Americans. Through the observation of production methods, this paper summarizes the process of creating a VR experience that expands the established production pipeline to more fluidly produce immersive interactive content. Using Homebound: The Interactive Immigrant Experience, a collaborative VR project as a prototype for these methods, we were able to integrate and develop a media production pipeline that uses off the shelf hardware in unison with Unreal Engine 4 to produce a prototype VR experience that follows the narrative on a Latin American Immigrant.

It is a reasonable expectation of the human condition to want to feel free and safe because we do not live in a utopian society. There are social injustices, wars, and atrocities that threaten the most basic of human needs and freedoms in many countries across the globe. Homebound, the virtual reality experience, which was developed in Unreal, aims to make sense of this crisis and shed light on the lives affected by this social ill. By using rich environments, virtual production and motion capture, to construct a place that captures the realism of the illegal immigration narrative, this manuscript will show how behavioral and gameplay psychology, when paired with environmental storytelling, can be utilized to craft impactful and empathetic, immersive stories and edutainment experiences for the player.

An explanation of the microwave emission based on the solution of the Boltzmann equation assuming electron-neutral collisions is discussed. The temperature and density of the plasma were determined from probe and spectroscopic experiments. Temperatures in the range of 4 to 16 eV were measured and probe data indicated a plasma density from (0.5 - 3) x 10^9 cm^-3.

The field could be converted from a shallow mirror to a deep mirror (R = 44), to a cusp geometry by varying the current ratio in two sets of magnet coils. Unguarded Langmuir probes and a periodic potential probe proved unsatisfactory due to sheath growth. A gridded Langmuir probe measured ion temperature of 26 eV and electron temperature of 9 eV, with ion density 7 to 10x10^8 cm^-3. The magnetic boundary value problem was solved analytically and comparison with previous experiments at Florida Atlantic University showed the electron temperature to depend on the magnetic field gradient in the Lisitano coil. It was also seen that high voltage (250 V) on the periodic probe was not ionizing neutrals.

In one condition the pair of parentheses formed a single object and in a second condition the parentheses formed two objects. The one- and two-object conditions were used to examine the contrasting positions of mental spotlight and object-based theories of attention. Mental spotlight theory holds that attention is allocated to regions in visual space, whereas object-based theory states that attention is allocated to objects in visual space. To evaluate the positions of these theories, the retinal proximity between the parentheses was varied. Mental spotlight theory predicts that performance differences, due to the changes of retinal proximity, should be the same regardless of whether the stimuli form one or two objects. Object-based theory predicts that retinal proximity facilitates performance for the one-object condition and retards performance for the two-object condition. The results indicated that retinal proximity facilitated performance for the one-object parentheses but retarded performance for the two-object parentheses. These results support the view that attention is allocated to objects rather than regions in visual space.

The boundaries of differences between people from various cultures limit our understanding of each other's conditions, problems, and concerns. As a designer, I seek to fade the boundaries between cultures and facilitate a conversation, promoting mutual understanding by blending visual elements from American and Iranian cultures. With interactive visual media and storytelling, I have created diverse visual artworks that combine traditional Iranian arts and crafts elements with visuals from American popular culture. This body of work includes illustrations, patterns, motion design, audio, and augmented reality. Through these shared visual experiences, I aim to introduce new values into the sphere of design, enrich the design world with diversity, and build a shared visual experience that talks both to Iranians and the cultural milieu of the United States. Producing art pieces with the theme of Shared Visual Experiences can aid in promoting diversity, fostering connection, encouraging innovation and creativity, and bringing attention to significant social and cultural issues. It is a meaningful way to contribute to a more interconnected world that benefits everyone.

We examine how one dimension, past professional experiences, can affect corporate payout policy. Exploiting exogenous CEO turnovers and future employment, we hypothesize that CEOs experiencing a distress event in their past career alter the corporate payout policy at their subsequent firm of employment. We discover that CEOs having experienced prior professional career distress are less likely to pay dividends and use repurchases and pay out lower levels for each type of payout. Additionally, when CEOs with distress do have a payout policy greater than zero dollars, there exists a preference toward the use of repurchases in the payout policy, adding to the literature of substitution and differences between the two forms of payout. We find that dividend smoothing is reduced by CEOs that have past professional distress.

Show moreThere are many theories in the field of international relations that relate the level of aggression in the international system to the distribution of power among nations. Unfortunately, most such propositions are difficult to validate or refute in the real world for which they were formulated. For this reason an experiment was devised which attempted to east two such conflicting positions, "balance of power", and "preponderance of power", into testable form. The experimental paradigm employed was a modified version of the two person mixed-motive game developed at the Systems Analysis Corporation, Santa Monica, California. Fifty-four subjects participa ted in the experiment. Twenty-seven subjects were placed into each of three treatment conditions: "balance of power": "moderate-inequality of power"; and "preponderant-inequality of power". In the "balance of power" condition all subjects were allotted twenty shocks. In the "moderate- inequality of power condition" one subject received twenty- five shocks while his dyadic partner received fifteen shocks. In the "preponderant-inequality of power" one subject received thirty shocks while his dyadic partner received ten shocks. All subjects played a total of fifteen games. A count was made of each subjects responses on eight game-play variables which were viewed as indices of cooperative or aggressive behavior. Additional data were also gathered with respect to each subjects sex, academic aptttude and attitudinal attributes. The purpose of the additional data was to identify variables, other than the treatment condition, affecting game behavior. Thus, facilitating future experimentation. The results of this research indicate that balanced situations tend to produce more cooperative non-aggressive behavior, while imbalances of power tend to generate less cooperative and more aggressive behavi.or. In addition, a balanced situation, when compared to the imbalanced situations, was found to increase the likelihood of participants never employing shock capabilities. Both this experiment and a pilot experiment found de-escalation cycles diffficult to instigate and unlikely to develop from natural causes. Finally, attitudinal, sex, and SCAT data did not appear to be meaningful factors in explaining game play. However, post-experiment sample data indiciated these factors must receive continued attention in future research.

Show moreThis study examined the effects of a wholistic technique to reading instruction called "Read a Book in an Hour" on reading comprehension, vocabulary, reading rate, listening comprehension, and composition. One hundred forty-four control and experimental subjects were drawn from eight independent groups of 48 sixth grade, 20 eighth grade, 44 tenth grade and 32 twelfth grade students in both public and private schools. Sixth and eighth grade students were from English classes, tenth grade students from religion classes, and twelfth graders from social studies classes. The teachers involved in the experiment were instructed via modeling and discussion in using the Read a Book in an Hour technique and were asked to choose books consistent with the content they were teaching (see Appendix A). A pretest/posttest design in a ten-week study used a thematic sequence of five books with the Read a Book technique. Measures of reading comprehension, vocabulary and reading rate were determined through scores on the Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test Form B, Brown Level, for sixth and eighth grade students and the Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test, Form B Blue Level for tenth and twelfth grade students. A measure of listening comprehension was determined through scores on the Stanford Diagnostic Listening Test, Advanced Form E. Composition scores were assessed with the criteria determined in the Stanford Advanced Writing Assessment Program Guide. ANOVAs and t-tests were used to analyze data in the pilot study and in the present study. T-tests were used for the pretests to determine homogeneity between the Read a Book in an Hour group and the control group, using silent reading activities and lecture. ANOVAs were used to assess the final data. Results of ANOVAs suggested significant change on all measures at the p >.05 level. Anecdotal evidence from interviews with teachers who used the method also suggested the technique generated interest in further reading of the novels studied and increased students' abilities to narrate orally, both quantitatively (number of details) arid qualitatively (significant details, style). Teachers also suggested students became more self-confident in posing questions, in clarifying points, and in answering questions.

With regards to the range of factors that moderates the impact of ACEs on life course health, resilience is suggested as a quality that can lead to better health and quality of life outcomes. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between adult-reported ACEs, resilience, and mental and physical health in Saudi Arabia. The study was a predictive/correlational design. Show moreThis dissertation aims to contextualize the self-taught Sicilian born artist, Tom DiSalvo (1947-2011) among contemporary artists of Italian extraction. It investigates a selection of his corpus of over 300 works of art spanning four decades as an integral contribution to Italian diasporic scholarship. The primarily large-scale paintings, enhanced with underlying textual layers and semiotic translations of famous works of art, reveal distinct ties to American, Italian and hybrid patterns of ethnicity. Much of his work remains unknown in scholarly and public circles, due in part to the limited canon of Italian diasporic visual art (with the exception of film) and to DiSalvo’s own disapproval of the commodification of his art. The project originated with the classification of the artist’s personal artifacts and the interpretation of his canvases displayed in both public and private spaces. The methodology employed in this dissertation is as unique and multifaceted as its topic. I depart from paintings to reveal the man behind the canvas, thanks to the voices and memories of friends and family on both sides of the ocean, anchoring my findings to the foundation of scholarly discussions, and theoretical and critical sources in the disciplines of hybrid cultural studies, Italian and Italian American art and literature, as well as outsider art to verify the intersections between DiSalvo and members of each of these communities.
