Art, science, and psychology contemplate the fundamental source of meaning and value: the human experience. The work emphasizes that our lives are not isolated but interrelated, reflecting a commonality on the most miniature biological scale. Scientific research confirms that cells can hold emotional experiences, a finding that is relevant to all humans. The conceptual visual context derives from philosophical systems, scientific theories, and aesthetic judgments, abstracting from the ever-changing ebb and flow of being in the living world. The Underlying of Being exhibition focuses on the figure in abstracted shapes and layers of monochromatic colors, various papers, fibers, wires, glaze, and paints, producing sections of human narration sinking below the surface into an illusion or disillusioned visual physiological state of fluid within an imagined biosystems.

This thesis exhibition is an installation of artwork comprised of the combined forms and outcomes from two types of investigation. One, a studio practice in which my own somatic engagement, collaborates with my personal aesthetics of form, to produce two kinds of exhibited work. The first is a large traditionally wrapped Japanese temari and the second, involves twenty low-relief two dimensional wrappings on eight-inch stretcher frames and configured in a circular pattern with a larger wrapped stretcher frame in the center. Two, a social practice which embodies relationally and somaesthetically inspired art making within community groups, as generators of a large hanging form of wrapped hula hoops. In its totality, the installation is an expression of the idea that the body is essential to both making art and experiencing art.

I was in Kandahar, Afghanistan, and at this point in time my unit and I had been in country for five out of the twelve months of our deployment. An ear-splitting boom woke me up, and the smell of iron and blood was so strong it seemed to override my ability to focus on what was really happening. The sounds I heard were lowered and muffled and mostly pain-filled and anguished. Mine was often a voice that joined them. Those cries could also change the course of a life. They are cries that, once heard, can never be erased from memory. I knew my comrades were down in the depths with me. I will never take anything for granted again. Honor and Chaos works across media to transform space and transport viewers. The exhibition incorporates sculptural forms of wire and scrap metal, dark ink drawings interrupted by spray paint, and salvaged plastics to immerse viewers in another place and time.

The audio explores the memories each speaker has of the deceased. A portrait of the speaker is painted on watersoluble paper with a quote from the conversation laser etched into the back of the painting. The painting is then placed in a water vessel made of plexiglass, and then installed on found raw wood and steel for support. Viewers are encouraged to sit on a provided chair to listen to each speaker.

Show moreGaze to discover is the approach a viewer should take as s/he encounters the work within this exhibition. The main idea is that the work should be interactive. Developing this interaction is the objective of each piece. To engage viewers to interact with a piece of art coincides with the ability to acquire their undivided attention. The realization that it is difficult for a viewer to have a tangible interaction with artwork in a gallery setting leads to asking the viewer to interact visually, "to look fixedly" - to gaze (Webster's Dictionary). Gazing at the work will direct the viewer to discover; "to gain knowledge through observation, study, or search" (Webster's Dictionary). The desired outcome is a personal relationship with each piece observed. Games, play, and visual interaction are what this installation addresses. The familiar vessel forms chosen draw the attention, but the alliteration imagery keeps the viewer intrigued. With the help of a game card, a viewer is left with a puzzle to solve only obtainable through the gaze to discover.

This body of paintings is a visual representation of land, water and flora that focuses on my abstraction of nature to extract essential elements that expresses my deep connection to a specific time and place, layered with associated memories. By revisiting a landscape over a sustained period of time, I developed a personal visual vocabulary to communicate the essential abstract forms of nature and record the subtle nuances of color, light, shape, texture, positive and negative space to evoke a particular time and place. I expanded my painting techniques through the addition of a laser cutter. Rooted in a background of graphic design, my thesis also incorporated and included a book form using similar strategies.

In manufacturing, and other economic areas, the product life cycle concept has been a proven method used in tracing the evolution of a product of industry through its various stages of life. In the past, most tourism models were used specifically to measure economic development, employment, foreign exchange, and tax revenues, but not the life cycle of the destination or site itself In recent years however, a form of the product life cycle model has been found increasingly useful in tracing the stages of the tourism product and its components. The tourism life cycle model provides the opportunity to study the history of a destination, site, or event by identifying the causes that influence its transition through each of its stages. The purpose of this paper is to trace the evolution of a major U.S. antiquing event by using the product, of more precisely, the tourism life cycle model. It will examine the different stages which the event had traversed, and will attempt to show that the time may be at hand for promoters and other vested participants to engage in strategic planning in order to rejuvenate the event.

Show moreThe aim of this investigation is to analyze the effects of incorporating scent-based elements in ethnographic exhibits. Specifically, it attempts to identify changes in patron response to a visual display, with and without a scent element. Groups of patrons were observed throughout their engagement with the exhibit, and interviewed post-engagement to generate data on information retention, opinion on content and empathetic response in relation to the exhibit. Findings suggest that the inclusion of scent did increase memorization of the limited facts reinforced through the scent element. However, there was no detectable difference between the groups on measures of overall comprehension of the subject matter, nor their empathetic responses toward the exhibited culture. The results of the study are discussed as a measure of the observer—observed dichotomy, and the argument is made that multisensory representation in the museum can aid in the facilitation of cross-cultural education.

The smaller works are constructed through the means of paper collage. The larger painting is built from discrete cut out shapes of plywood and canvas. I had the unique experience of growing up around both water treatment operations and the flora and fauna of South Florida. Those experiences were filtered through a fascination for the science fiction genre, and imparted with a dose of fearful imagination. This has resulted in personal anxieties concerning the future of the human experience. My work explores and utilizes expressive properties of paint. I utilize applications that range from the attractive and sensuous to the messy and grotesque. All of this adds up to a visual expression of the potential nightmarish outcomes created as a result of our manipulation of the environment.

In this documentation, I outline historical and contextual influences that shape my ceramic practice. I specify that my work is centered on my life and describe how my work has evolved since I first started in the program. In the process I have gathered source material and have explored key points in the theory and history of Minimalism. As I developed the work, I was able to discuss how my work applied to these sources, and where it differed. I ended with introspective installation work that paralleled the themes I was working with at the start of my graduate experience that shows my evolution from being a child continually bounced around from one family member to another, to being the confidant of my mother and holding her darkest secrets, to feeling alone and unloved, to finally beginning to heal and accept who I am.

Show moreThis thesis is a critical study of two exhibits, First Encounters Spanish Exploration in the Caribbean and A Tribute to Survival. The objective of the thesis was to understand if and how indigenous activists, using the media as tool, were able to change curatorial approaches to exhibition development. Chapter 1 is broken into three sections. The first section introduces the exhibits and succinctly discusses the theory that is applied to this thesis. The second section discusses the objectives of the project and the third provides a brief outline of the document. Chapter 2 discusses the historical background of American museums in an attempt to highlight changes in curatorial attitudes towards the public, display, interpretation, and authority. Chapter 3 gives a more in-depth overview of the methodology and materials utilized in the thesis. Chapter 4 is a critical analysis of the literature for both First Encounters and A Tribute to Survival. Chapter five is a summary of the thesis and offers a conclusion of the effectiveness of using the media as a tool.
