Communicating information in an interesting and understandable manner has become a necessity in the computer industry due to the increase in users who are interested in animation, simulation, graphical design, games and graphic representations of complex mathematical information. The Synchronous System Architecture described in this paper will illustrate a simple, low cost and efficient means of creating and displaying images on a cathode ray tube (CRT). A step-by-step design procedure is presented which utilizes the Synchronous System Architecture (SSA) in a standalone system/terminal environment. Finally, the software alogrithms used in the system will be outlined and discussed.

This thesis studies recent methods requiring the user to place only modest scribbles identifying the foreground and the background. This research demonstrates a new GPU-based implementation of the recently introduced Fuzzy- Matte algorithm. Interactive matte extraction was achieved on a CUDA enabled G80 graphics processor. Experimental results demonstrate improved performance over the previous CPU based version. In depth analysis of experimental data from the GPU and the CPU implementations are provided. The design challenges of porting a variant of Dijkstra's shortest distance algorithm to a parallel processor are considered.

Graph labeling is a rapidly developing area of research in graph theory, having connections with a variety of application-oriented areas such as VLSI optimization, data structures and data representation. Furthermore, the connectivity conditions in a simple graphs may help us to study the new aspects of ad hoc networks, social networks and web graphs. In chapter 2, we study path systems, reduced path systems and how to construct a super edge-graceful tree with any number of edges using path systems. First, we give an algorithm to reduce a labeled path system to a smaller labeled path system of a different type. First, we investigate the cases (m, k) = (3; 5) and (m, k) = (4; 7), where m is the number of paths and 2k is the length of each path, and then we give a generalization for any k, m = 3 and m = 4. We also describe a procedure to construct a super-edge-graceful tree with any number of edges.

Augmented reality, one of the newest state-of-the-art technologies, offers users the opportunity to add virtual information to their real world surroundings in real time. It also has the potential to not only augment the sense of sight, but also other senses such as hearing. Augmented reality could be used to offer the opportunity to complement users' missing sense. In this thesis, we study augmented reality technologies, systems and applications, and suggest the future of AR applications. We explain how to integrate augmented reality into iOS applications and propose an augmented reality application for hearing augmentation using an iPad2. We believe mobile devices are the best platform for augmented reality as they are widespread and their computational power is rapidly growing to be able to handle true AR applications.

Very strong correlation is found between the night light data at a new, larger scale, the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) within the state of Florida. Additional statistical analysis was performed to determine which industries within each MSA explain the greatest amount of variance in the night light data. Industrial variables exhibited strong multi-collinearity. It is therefore impossible to determine which industries explain the greatest variance in the night light image data.

IconSEE++ is composed of three layers. The Icon Generator, Manager and Repository form a part of the middle layer. This thesis includes a survey of visual development tools and their comparison to IconSEE++. For the Icon Generator, Manager and Repository, the thesis presents object-oriented analysis models in UML notation, identifies implementation issues and provides strategies to solve them. Numerous code segments illustrating proposed solutions have been developed.

The Lake Okeechobee Ecosystem Study (LOES) a five-year study, conducted by SFWMD to collect information about water quality and other ecological factors in the Lake Okeechobee area, is one of the many projects that the SFWMD is involved in for the restoration of Florida's ecosystem. The study resulted in a large volume of information being compiled by scientists into files of different formats. Florida Atlantic University (FAU) undertook the task of restructuring the database and designing and implementing the Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) to support this ecological system. As part of an earlier project, an object model was designed to standardize the files that also helped in the creation of a relational database to store the information. A goal of the current project was to design GUIs that could be used without difficulty, by persons that may or may not be database technology familiar. This thesis describes and analyzes the design and implementation of the GUIs. It focuses on the two types of interfaces implemented, namely the Query and Administrative forms. The implementation of the GUIs were completed and tested and deployed at SFWMD.

Various surface and volume rendering methods are tested with synthetic datasets containing fluid loaded spheres and with experimental data acquired with a 4-by-8 planar hydrophone array towed over buried objects with various aspects and size. The Maximum Intensity Projection is the best of the tested methods for real-time visualization of the data where a global overview of the targets is needed. A surface rendering technique such as the Marching Cubes is useful for offline measurement of the geometry and size of buried objects selected by the operator.

Show moreA method to create 3D-face image using 2D-face images is the objective of this research. The 3D-face image is constructed using a set of 3D-face images of other persons available in a face database. The 3D-face image actually depicts a parameterized form in terms of depth and texture. This concept can be used to facilitate creating a 3D-face image from 2D database. For this purpose, a 3D-face database is first developed. When a 2D-face image is presented to the system, a 3D-face image that starts with an average 3D-face image (derived from the 3D-face database) is projected onto the 2D-image plane, with necessary rotation, translation, scaling and interpolation. The projected image is then compared with the input image; and, an optimization algorithm is applied to minimize an error index by selecting 3D-depth and texture parameters. Hence, the projected image is derived. Once the algorithm converges, the resulting 3D-depth and the texture parameters can be employed to construct a 3D-face image of the subject photographed in the 2D-images. A merit of this method is that only the depth and texture parameters of the compared images are required to be stored in the database. Such data can be used either for the recreation of a 3D-image of the test subject or for any biometric authentication (based on 3D face recognition). Results from an experimental study presented in the thesis illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, which has applications in biometric authentication and 3D computer graphics areas.

Currently, mapping the spread of the Ebola virus is done manually, however with the help of social contact networks we can model dynamic graphs and predictive diffusion models of Ebola virus based on the impact on either a specific person or a specific community. With the help of this model, we can make more precise forward predictions of the disease propagations and to identify possibly infected individuals which will help perform trace – back analysis to locate the possible source of infection for a social group. This model will visualize and identify the families and tightly connected social groups who have had contact with an Ebola patient and is a proactive approach to reduce the risk of exposure of Ebola spread within a community or geographic location.

Unlike the Ray Tracing (RT) algorithm, the MC algorithm is not affected by the tissue inhomogeneities, which are significant inside the chest cavity. A retrospective study was completed for 102 plans calculated using both the RT and MC algorithms. The D95 of the PTV was 26% lower for the MC calculation. The first parameter of conformality, as defined as the ratio of the Prescription Isodose Volume to the PTV Volume was on average 1.27 for RT and 0.67 for MC. The results confirm that the RT algorithm significantly overestimates the dosages delivered confirming previous analyses. Correlations indicate that these overestimates are largest for small PTV and/or when the ratio of the volume of lung tissue to the PTV approaches 1.

The interface allows the user to define the platform motion relative to various coordinate systems: base, platform and joint. The velocity/position reference to the platform's controller can be provided by the following ways: preprogrammed data file, serial communication RS-232, 6 degrees of freedom joystick and soft teach pendant. The platform was designed to be used as "Space Emulator" and therefore a 6 degrees of freedom force/torque sensor was needed. Two different models of such sensors were designed and analyzed using finite element analysis techniques. Based on the results one particular model was selected, fabricated, instrumented with strain gages and calibrated in order to obtain its stiffness matrix. The effect of drifting of the sensor output due to self heating of the strain gages and the electronic components of the strain gage amplifiers was also studied.

Show moreThis thesis describes the modeling of Martial Arts as a markup language. Up until now Martial Arts has already been documented in books, videos, tradition and other methods. Though to represent Martial Arts knowledge consistently and uniformly in a digital era, we introduce the Martial Arts Markup Language (MAML), which is based on XML. Because XML provides a standardized, serializable and portable format, MAML also enables sharing among students, teachers and their peers across different platforms, media and networks. MAML provides the ability, with appropriate XML tools, to document a Martial Arts style in a structured way. To achieve this, we first analyze the aspects that comprise Martial Arts; and how its states and processes relate to one another. We model in MAML describing the stances, transitions, punches, blocks, techniques, combinations, reactions and patterns used in Martial Arts. We discuss the implementation of MAML by observing and extracting the definable aspects in existing Martial Art Instructive Documents. The MAML Schema assures that the details of a Martial Arts Style’s elements are consistent. Current simulation efforts will be explained as well as areas for future development. We have described Martial Arts by observing what has already been done and creating a structured standard to document them. We hope to enable practitioners’ abilities to learn from and develop their arts by providing a resource in which they can interact with.

We have an opportunity not only to interact with 3D content but also to immerse ourselves in it via Virtual Reality (VR). This work is deeply inspired by my experience as a Ukrainian witnessing the recent turmoil in my homeland. I wanted people around the globe to experience the horrors that are unfolding. The Voice of the People, explores narrative storytelling through VR. Ultimately, the viewer will be able to put on a VR headset and become deeply immersed in the story. With this technology, the user intimately experiences the war and devastation created by Russian occupation first hand. The end of World War II is a critical time in my country’s history. Included in the 3D environment are video segments of those affected by the current Russian occupation; historical themes underscore the narrative and help the viewer understand the recurring aggression by Russia that is part of Ukraine’s history.
