Getting your point across effectively can be the difference between earning your desired outcomes or failing to receive desired results from individuals or the corporate setting. Business Communication for Success is a product of an Open Education Resource initiative at Florida Atlantic University. Adaptation author, Dr. George Grunfeld, received support from the Florida Atlantic University Library and Center for eLearning to create this Open Education Resource. This Business Communication for Success eText is an adaptation of a previously adapted Business Communication for Success eText that was published through the University of Minnesota. The adapted Florida Atlantic University 2019 edition explains the key aspects of both verbal and nonverbal communication, how to listen to and understand others, and how to make the best possible first impression on the people you encounter in and around business opportunities. Business Communication for Success has been enhanced with dynamic instructional videos allowing readers to learn and review at their own pace.

Show moreThis study provides empirical evidence on the impact of high-tech firms' unrecognized intangible investments on the market valuation of cash flow and accrual amounts. In particular, this study empirically examines the different valuation weights that capital market participants attach to accrual-based versus cash flow-based measures when valuing intangible-intensive, high-technology stocks, and finds that investors appear to value, on average, a dollar of cash flows higher than a dollar of accruals for intangible-intensive high-technology firms. Based on samples of Compustat high- and low-technology firms between 1992--2001, the empirical results suggest that cash flows have larger multiplier than aggregate accruals, and have incremental value-relevant information beyond that contained in the individual components of accruals for valuing high-technology stocks. This study further provides evidence that suggests that cash earnings measures of low-technology firms are dominated by those of high-technology firms as a summary indicator of share values. This study contributes to existing literature that reports no substantial difference in the value relevance of cash flow and accrual amounts in high and low tech industries. It provides evidence that suggests that capital market investors do not hold high-tech stocks to the same standards of valuation that they use for low-tech traditional stocks.

A questionnaire consisting of three parts was used to gather data. The first part consisted of thirty modified Likert Scale questions to measure the respondents' feelings toward items reflective of typical industrial situations. The second part incorporated the respondents' value rankings of Rokeach-Clare-Sanford terminal and instrumental values and their perceived value rankings of relevant other people in their job environments. The third part involved certain demographic information about the respondents and that relationship to conflict areas. Chi-square and the Spearman Coefficient were used in analyzing the results.

A critical analysis of the college training these workers receive will show a "professional" ideology with a strong pro-management bias. It will show a world view dominated by fear of failure and by strong intragroup competition. To the extent this ideology becomes accepted as common sense, graduates come into the workforce alienated from their fellow workers, identifying with an elite of which they are not a part. Using Fredric Jameson's methodology, we can analyze the narrative framework and content of one aspect of this training, the business communication course. Although part of an educational system that prides itself on intellectual independence, it is actually an adjunct of contemporary capitalism and its ideological structure.

Show moreThis research focuses on cross-border acquisitions of emerging market multinationals (EM MNEs). Opposing theoretical perspectives of colonial ties (i.e., country ties between the acquiring and target firm countries, with the former being a colonized country and the latter being a colonizer country) are argued as predictors of EM MNE equity participation. Colonial tie is discussed as a source of legitimacy that can lower legitimacy threats (i.e., the likelihood of being deemed as illegitimate) via promoting similarities in informal institutions of the home and host countries. On the other hand, colonial tie is argued to be a historical event that can increase legitimacy threats due to perceived superiority of the colonizer. Chapter 1 contains an overview of and rationale for the study. Chapters 2-4 cover the literature review, theoretical development, contributions, and avenues for future research. This research fills the gap in literature by introducing colonization as a historical perspective with which to understand equity participation decisions.

Since I had no concrete bypothesis with which to begin the paper, I chose to use exploratory research. Pollution is current, however, and I felt that there was a particular problem concerning pollution and how much it will cost. After a survey of the experts in the field and their proposals, I found some very definite trends. I found the general feeling to be that there is a growing conflict concerning just who is going to pay for pollu~ion control. Whoever pays for the costs, I found that the present market structure does not properly account for the costs of pollution control. These findings led me to the conclusion that pollution control is more of a problem than I suspected and that it deserves more complete analysis as to possible solutions.

Show moreContrasting viewpoints have emerged regarding the selection of marketing strategies in global markets. One group of scholars recommends standardized global marketing strategies based on the premise that technological advances in telecommunication, transportation, and media are leading to similarities in customer preferences across the world. Other researchers recommend multi-domestic strategies on the premise that consumer heterogeneity continues to increase even within countries. Firms marketing products in global markets appear to adopt global marketing strategies, multi-domestic strategies, and various intermediate strategies that encompass different degrees of standardization. This research develops a theoretical framework to examine the factors that influence marketing strategies in global markets. Transaction cost analysis constructs are used to determine whether to standardize or customize marketing strategy. The basis for adopting different levels of standardization on marketing program and process variables is empirically investigated. A multinomial logit model is used to estimate the likelihood of adopting different degrees of standardization with data from American multinational corporations on 161 products marketed in different global markets. The results indicate that higher levels of asset specificity associated with patented technical knowledge favor physical attribute standardization in global markets. Volatile political environments, high degrees of ownership in affiliates, and global competitors' standardized marketing strategies encourage firms to tailor physical attributes. Brand names are standardized if the economic uncertainty is lower in foreign markets. Cultural dissimilarities between home and host countries hinder marketing control systems standardization. Operating experience in foreign countries and the need for technical service and customer interactions support standardization of marketing control systems. The need for specialized local market knowledge encourages the adoption of country-specific marketing research methods. Standardized pricing strategies are preferred over flexible country-specific strategies in volatile political environments.

Show moreThis thesis presents a theoretical behavioral model that deals with the expansionary phase of the business cycle. Its purpose was to provide a plausible explanation for growth out of recession. In this model, expansionary output is directly related to investment, saving, and the expected returns to capital. Moreover, it is assumed that capital formation is inversely related to the interest rate, which serves as the independent variable with respect to investment, production, saving, and expected returns. In addition, the basic model is linked to the combined influence of fiscal and monetary policy through the use of a coefficient. This coefficient can alter the fundamental dynamic of the growth path. Finally, the four basic non-linear curves that compose the behavioral model are compared to curves suggested by scatter diagrams. In conclusion, there seems to be some conformity of statistical reality to the non-linear relationships described by the behavioral model, as well as general agreement with a large body of existent theory.

Show moreEnrollment of students with widely diverse academic aptitude and life experiences in large classes, forced instructors in the Business Data Processing department at Miami-Dade Community College to seek more effective ways to respond to the individual needs and learning styles of the students. Intensive review of the literature indicated that prior achievement accounted for approximately 50% of the variance in student grade point average. Another 25% was accounted for by motivation. Interest and personality tests did not contribute significantly to predictions of academic performance. Cognitive style remained largely unexplored at the college level. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of matching student perceived cognitive styles, as measured by the Learning Styles Inventory (LSI) with differentiated teaching strategies. The study evaluates and analyzes the interaction effect of sex, age, grade point average, four LSI Content scales, four LSI Mode scales and sixteen Learning Packages selected to supplement the text and classroom presentation. It is concluded that while GPA is the best single predictor, it can be improved by combining it with measures of student learning preferences. Thus the present study demonstrates that academic performance can be enhanced when students are taught subject matter in a mode that is in accord with the students' learning style preference as measured by the Learning Style Inventory.
