The study was limited to community college art teachers and art students with emphasis on the problems of teaching a diverse art student population. A review of the literature provided information that community college art teachers are confronted with a diverse student body having varied learning styles and art experiences. The art teacher does need different instructional methods in order to effectively present the subject matter. The literature was also a source of information that was used in the development of two instructional videotape modules.

This body of work is comprised of fourteen oil glaze paintings on canvas, ranging in size from 16x 16 inches to 36 x 48 inches. These paintings demonstrate, through subjective color and the application of misty layers of luminous paint, my residence on the edge of moving to the future and looking to the past. Through imagination my paintings express a longing for connections and offer glimpses of happiness tinted with a pervasive overcast of melancholy. Mercury Express is a visual expression of what I consider to be ‘Kitsch’, ‘Sentimental’ and ‘Adventurous’. Through this work I salvage and renew the child-like wonder that managed to survive into my adulthood. Through the positioning of remembered objects in imaginary landscapes, Mercury Express recalls and explores my childhood memories, ideas and aspirations to reclaim the wonder I have lost as an adult.

Additional elements include a Mechanical Dog that the viewer activates with a hand-held crank; muslin fabric printed with hand-made ceramic stamps, and a curtain. The ceramic stamps are incised with a version of the puppets playing the game of jacks. The installation is within a three-walled room that invites viewers into a liminal time-space and experience, then leads them out again.

This body of work is a collection of resurfaced history and experiences transformed physically by intentionally subverting hyper-masculine materials into knots. My objective is to deconstruct individual knotted cords that make up the fabric of my identity and reconstruct them into an installation. Renascence offers a visceral experience for the audience that aesthetically explores the body’s transformation as it heals. This thesis asserts a place within a reflective, fluid, transitional identity expressing the intersection of the temporality and body that I occupy as a Queer, Latinx artist of color. Working across media, Renascence incorporates performance, photography, paper, paint, projection, mirrors and built environments.

This thesis exhibition is an installation of artwork comprised of the combined forms and outcomes from two types of investigation. One, a studio practice in which my own somatic engagement, collaborates with my personal aesthetics of form, to produce two kinds of exhibited work. The first is a large traditionally wrapped Japanese temari and the second, involves twenty low-relief two dimensional wrappings on eight-inch stretcher frames and configured in a circular pattern with a larger wrapped stretcher frame in the center. Two, a social practice which embodies relationally and somaesthetically inspired art making within community groups, as generators of a large hanging form of wrapped hula hoops. In its totality, the installation is an expression of the idea that the body is essential to both making art and experiencing art.

In all of its many incarnations home exists as a construction out of time and space that absorbs the accumulation of life performed around and within its walls. Home is idealized and sought after, both sanctuary and snare. The iterations of home I created are primarily constructed from repurposed materials with inherent histories; unstable and malleable. Cardboard and paper holds the plastic veneer of various mediums to shape, color, and mar surfaces. The home develops an identity as it absorbs each action and material, gradually becoming an entity as well as a receptacle, to both display and obfuscate the nostalgic and the unattainable. Each hardened home becomes a haunted being in which memories interlace and fade away as they transform into the wild twisted houses of reverie.

I have chosen the intense drama of Ophelia’s final appearance on stage to inspire this body of work. The drama and imagery of Shakespeare’s plays has been a profound source of ideas for me. They motivate me to connect with all available resources in an energetic way to create visually captivating pieces of art. My objective is not to illustrate any given scene but to leverage the text for a personal artistic experience. The result is an abstraction that captures the energy of a dramatic moment. The art I produce is an expressive record of my relationship with the literature.

It is an examination of the most basic sculptural issues of form and space, and reverses the roles of prototype and mold to give visual accounting of spaces created by curved planes. These spatial records allude to cycles of disintegration and reconfiguration of matter on various timelines and scales. The philosophical influence behind the work employs the concepts of yin and yang, which relate directly to the mold/positive relationship, and are essential to experiencing Dao, the eternally nameless underlying order of the universe.

Show moreThis study offers a reconsideration of the function or purpose of symbolism in religious art objects. Church architecture is considered a religious art object in this thesis., Many art historians and contemporary writers, who study church architecture, wish to discuss the "aesthetic form" that has been used or should be used in the construction of modern ecclesiastical buildings. This dissertation argues that church architecture's first and most important responsibility is in fostering religious experience, not aesthetic experience. In this thesis, a firm wedge is driven between the two phenomena of religious and aesthetic experience. It is not suggested that there should be no appeal to the viewer's aesthetic sensibilities; rather, the aesthetic experience should be a secondary concern to the church builder., This dissertation develops the concept of "iconographic significance" to explain the qualities of the religious art object that encourage profound religious experience. The iconographic significance of the religious art object is for the instruction of the worshipper; it provides him or her with a model of or image of the divine. This model or image is intended to be a model for earthly living. The worshipper is meant to transform his or her world to be like that of the heavenly order. For example, Gothic cathedrals presented an image of the "heavenly Jerusalem", that humanity might emulate the heavenly company of the celestial city. The church building was a symbolic formula for the intellectual, moral, and mystical instruction of the worshipping community., This thesis analyzes the religious intentions of Abbot Suger in the building of the first Gothic structure, the Abbey of St. Denis. Also considered is the socio-historical context which made Suger's intentions normative for the development of twelfth and thirteenth century Ile-de-France cathedrals., This thesis advocates that contemporary church architecture should be, like its Gothic antecedents, built with the primary intention of fostering religious experience. The works of two twentieth century churchmen, Ralph Adams Cram and Bishop Charles E. Bennison, and the socio-historical contexts which made their works normative, are analyzed because of intentions to instruct the laity in holy living through the vehicle of church architecture.

To provide empirical evidence for this added value of the arts in learning, this study investigated the efficacy of teaching science concepts in and through the visual arts by implementing an art integrated lesson., The study investigated the impact of an art integration to assist elementary level learners' visual perception so they could more accurately form mental models of the science ideas. The hypothesis suggests that participants in the art intervention who construct a three-dimensional representation of abstract science concepts will gain an increased understanding of those concepts. Specifically, students who work with parallel concepts in art and science to make and manipulate three-dimensional, kinetic models of the sun, earth, and moon will be able to more accurately visualize the relationships between these heavenly bodies., Fifth grade students participated in the study which was integrated into the regular curriculum. Seventy-six randomly selected students comprised the experimental group and participated in the art project. After the completion of traditional textbook and lecture presentation by the classroom teachers, a researcher developed Science Concept Test was administered to all fifth grade students. Statistically significant results indicated that the differences between the groups on the science concept test were due to the integration of the art intervention. These empirical data show significant differences between the group receiving the art intervention and the group receiving traditional classroom instruction, supporting the efficacy of the art integration model., In conclusion, the study supports the literature that suggests the efficacy of art integration partnerships as alternative avenues for presenting and representing knowledge. The study additionally supports the literature establishing the need for concrete modeling of science concepts at the elementary level. Furthermore, the study indicates the need for further investigation into attitudes toward art integration partnerships, the role of the arts in the culture of education, and the viability of instruments to assess conceptual understanding in the visual arts and in science.

Traditionally, an individual or small group of individuals underwrote the shortfall. Today, however, no individual or small group can afford to underwrite these massive deficits, and organizations must go to the appropriate "capital" markets for funding. These "capital" markets--individuals, foundations, corporations, and governments--now provide well over half of the funding for not-for-profit opera, symphony, ballet, and theatre companies, and the percentage rises each year. For the performing arts to survive, arts administrators must increase the amount of support from present contributors and find new sources of funding at a time when revisions in the IRS Tax Code conspire to discourage giving.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to compare the aesthetic tastes of subjects with formal design training to the aesthetic tastes of the general population. The Graves Design Judgment Test was used as the Design Knowledge set of data in this correlational Ex post facto study. The visual art stimuli were chosen by a panel of art experts using dual 7 point bipolar scales for realism and design. Visual art stimuli were reproduced from various worldwide gallery and museum collections. A diverse set of art stimuli subject matter was used to minimize content preference by subjects. A multivariate analysis of variance, a correlation matrix, regression analysis, and principle components were used to statistically discern a significant difference between the groups studied. The group with a high cognate knowledge of design showed a preference for non-objective or abstract art more than the group without cognate design knowledge. Analysis of variance found a significant difference at the .05 level between the two groups' preferences for non-objective art but revealed no significant difference at the .05 level for either group's preferences for realism. The results of this study are consistent with earlier art preference research describing differences in trained and untrained subjects' preferences.

The aim of this descriptive study was to discover what is the nature of the experience of creating visual art as an aspect of nursing care from a nurse's perspective. Using van Manen's phenomenological approach, a description of the experience of creating visual art with patients occurred. Five essential themes emerged and express this experience. The unity of meaning for the experience is portrayed as A Healing Portrait of the Soul's Journey in Compassionate, Cocreative Relationships of Openness, Human Connectedness and Transformation. Implications for nursing inquiry, practice, and education are discussed.

New designs provide deterrence against counterfeiting, and, in some cases, accommodate the special needs of visually challenged individuals. Often aesthetics are given lower priority or ignored completely. This thesis is an examination of the author's motivations, inspirations, goals and design decisions involved in creating a set of paper currency bills that fit the high-tech, fast-paced and culturally diverse society that is twenty-first century America. The author incorporates a deep visual texture with American symbols and historical events illustrated by shape and shading alone---no color or line. Semiotics and visual metaphors are applied to convey meaning to abstract or complex concepts. Counterfeit deterrence features and features for use by visually challenged individuals are integrated into the design, thus producing a system of currency that is both functional and aesthetic.
