Show moreEfficient searching is one of the important design issues in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. Among various searching techniques, semantic-based searching has drawn significant attention recently. Gnutella-like efficient searching system (GES) [29] is such a system. GES derives node vector , a semantic summary of all documents on a node based on vector space model (VSM). The node-based topology adaptation algorithm and search protocol are then discussed. However, when there are many categories of documents at each node, the node vector representation may be inaccurate. We extend the idea of GES and present a class-based search system (CSS). It makes use of a document clustering algorithm: OSKM [27] to cluster all documents on a node into several classes. Each class can be viewed as a virtual node. As a result, class vector replaces node vector and plays an important role in class-based topology adaptation and search process, which makes CSS very efficient. Our simulation demonstrates that CSS outperforms GES.

RETAININGEARTH is an interactive menu-driven system and consists of two modules--the selection module, SELECTWALL and the design module. SELECTWALL is developed using the rule-based M.1 knowledge engineering shell and it makes a choice of the most appropriate retaining structure from a list of ten typical walls. The design module consists of five independent design programs which performs detailed designs of the concrete gravity and cantilever walls, gabions, reinforced earth and sheetpile structures. The SELECTWALL and the design module are linked by the M.1 external code EXT through a control program CALL. All the design procedures are coded using the C programming language.

Show moreA method to create 3D-face image using 2D-face images is the objective of this research. The 3D-face image is constructed using a set of 3D-face images of other persons available in a face database. The 3D-face image actually depicts a parameterized form in terms of depth and texture. This concept can be used to facilitate creating a 3D-face image from 2D database. For this purpose, a 3D-face database is first developed. When a 2D-face image is presented to the system, a 3D-face image that starts with an average 3D-face image (derived from the 3D-face database) is projected onto the 2D-image plane, with necessary rotation, translation, scaling and interpolation. The projected image is then compared with the input image; and, an optimization algorithm is applied to minimize an error index by selecting 3D-depth and texture parameters. Hence, the projected image is derived. Once the algorithm converges, the resulting 3D-depth and the texture parameters can be employed to construct a 3D-face image of the subject photographed in the 2D-images. A merit of this method is that only the depth and texture parameters of the compared images are required to be stored in the database. Such data can be used either for the recreation of a 3D-image of the test subject or for any biometric authentication (based on 3D face recognition). Results from an experimental study presented in the thesis illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, which has applications in biometric authentication and 3D computer graphics areas.

Show moreA Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) is a wireless ad-hoc network that provides communications among vehicles with on-board units and between vehicles and nearby roadside units. The success of a VANET relies on the ability of a routing protocol to ful ll the throughput and delivery requirements of any applications operating on the network. Currently, most of the proposed VANET routing protocols focus on urban or highway environments. This dissertation addresses the need for an adaptive routing protocol in VANETs which is able to tolerate low and high-density network tra c with little throughput and delay variation. This dissertation proposes three Geographic Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (GEOADV) protocols. These three GEOADV routing protocols are designed to address the lack of exibility and adaptability in current VANET routing protocols. The rst protocol, GEOADV, is a hybrid geographic routing protocol. The second protocol, GEOADV-P, enhances GEOADV by introducing predictive features. The third protocol, GEOADV-PF improves optimal route selection by utilizing fuzzy logic in addition to GEOADV-P's predictive capabilities. To prove that GEOADV and GEOADV-P are adaptive their performance is demonstrated by both urban and highway simulations. When compared to existing routing protocols, GEOADV and GEOADV-P lead to less average delay and a higher average delivery ratio in various scenarios. These advantages allow GEOADV- P to outperform other routing protocols in low-density networks and prove itself to be an adaptive routing protocol in a VANET environment. GEOADV-PF is introduced to improve GEOADV and GEOADV-P performance in sparser networks. The introduction of fuzzy systems can help with the intrinsic demands for exibility and adaptability necessary for VANETs. An investigation into the impact adaptive beaconing has on the GEOADV protocol is conducted. GEOADV enhanced with an adaptive beacon method is compared against GEOADV with three xed beacon rates. Our simulation results show that the adaptive beaconing scheme is able to reduce routing overhead, increase the average delivery ratio, and decrease the average delay.

Show moreThis work presents the development of the Statistical Location-Assisted Broadcast (SLAB) protocol, a multi-hop wireless broadcast protocol designed for vehicular ad-hoc networking (VANET). Vehicular networking is an important emerging application of wireless communications. Data dissemination applications using VANET promote the ability for vehicles to share information with each other and the wide-area network with the goal of improving navigation, fuel consumption, public safety, and entertainment. A critical component of these data dissemination schemes is the multi-hop wireless broadcast protocol. Multi-hop broadcast protocols for these schemes must reliably deliver broadcast packets to vehicles in a geographically bounded region while consuming as little wireless bandwidth as possible. This work contains substantial research results related to development of multi-hop broadcast protocols for VANET, culminating in the design of SLAB. Many preliminary research and development efforts have been required to arrive at SLAB. First, a high-level wireless broadcast simulation tool called WiBDAT is developed. Next, a manual optimization procedure is proposed to create efficient threshold functions for statistical broadcast protocols. This procedure is then employed to design the Distribution-Adaptive Distance with Channel Quality (DADCQ) broadcast protocol, a preliminary cousin of SLAB. DADCQ is highly adaptive to node density, node spatial distribution pattern, and wireless channel quality in realistic VANET scenarios. However, the manual design process used to create DADCQ has a few deficiencies. In response to these problems, an automated design procedure is created that uses a black-box global optimization algorithm to search for efficient threshold functions that are evaluated using WiBDAT. SLAB is finally designed using this procedure., Expansive simulation results are presented comparing the performance of SLAB to two well-published VANET broadcast protocols, p -persistence and Advanced Adaptive Gossip (AAG), and to DADCQ. The four protocols are evaluated under varying node density and speed on five different road topologies with varying wireless channel fading conditions. The results demonstrate that unlike p-persistence and AAG, SLAB performs well across a very broad range of environmental conditions. Compared to its cousin protocol DADCQ, SLAB achieves similar reachability while using around 30% less wireless bandwidth, highlighting the improvement in the automated design methodology over the manual design.

Many installed controllers on the street use time of day (TOD) patterns due to cheaper cost than adaptive traffic control systems, but that is not the best solution for traffic volume changes that can occur during the day or even a month. To improve traffic signal operation most of the traffic signal controllers in the same corridor or zone operate in coordination mode. Furthermore, phases need to be in coordination to achieve “green wave”. Green wave is term used when in corridor traffic lights allow continues flow of traffic through intersections that are coordinated.

Therefore, it is important to design a reliable multi-hop broadcast protocol, which satis es both reachability and bandwidth consumption requirements. In a dense network, where vehicles are very close to each other, the number of vehicles needed to rebroadcast the message should be small enough to avoid a broad- cast storm, but large enough to meet the reachability requirement. If the network is sparse, a higher number of vehicles is needed to retransmit to provide a higher reachability level. So, it is obvious that there is a tradeo between reachability and bandwidth consumption. In this work, considering the above mentioned challenges, we design a number of smart broadcast protocols and evaluate their performance in various network den- sity scenarios. We use fuzzy logic technique to determine the quali cation of vehicles to be forwarders, resulting in reachability enhancement. Then we design a band- width e cient fuzzy logic-assisted broadcast protocol which aggressively suppresses the number of retransmissions. We also propose an intelligent hybrid protocol adapts to local network density. In order to avoid packet collisions and enhance reachability, we design a cross layer statistical broadcast protocol, in which the contention window size is adjusted based on the local density information. We look into the multi-hop broadcast problem with an environment based on game theory. In this scenario, vehicles are players and their strategy is either to volunteer and rebroadcast the received message or defect and wait for others to rebroadcast. We introduce a volunteer dilemma game inspired broadcast scheme to estimate the probability of forwarding for the set of potential forwarding vehicles. In this scheme we also introduce a fuzzy logic-based contention window size adjustment system. Finally, based on the estimated spatial distribution of vehicles, we design a transmission range adaptive scheme with a fuzzy logic-assisted contention window size system, in which a bloom lter method is used to mitigate overhead. Extensive experimental work is obtained using simulation tools to evaluate the performance of the proposed schemes. The results con rm the relative advantages of the proposed protocols for di erent density scenarios.

Paradoxically, the construction, maintenance, and operations of the built environment, including the built campus environment, have contributed to the decline of raw resources and degradation of environmental processes. An opportunity exists to bridge the knowledge gap between the design and construction phase and the operations and maintenance phase of the green certified building life cycle, while examining the parts that contributed to the green-certification of the whole building. The purpose of this research was to 1.) identify green-building features and determine their frequency of implementation in new capital (NC) LEED-certified, campus buildings to effectuate operations and maintenance cost savings, indoor wellbeing, and environmental stewardship, and 2.) determine the relationships of greenbuilding feature usage across building, institutional, and LEED characteristics. The study used archival data to document the green efforts of each building with the study’s sample of 195 buildings on the campus of 107 universities and colleges, in the United States, between 2007 and 2017. The study’s findings indicated that the public institutions earned the LEED certification more often than private institutions and the sample was void of two-year community colleges. The sample was restricted for green-building features that (a) reduce economic cost, (b) improve indoor wellbeing, and (c) increase environmental stewardship. The results and implications are discussed.

This thesis presents the general design scheme, detailed aerodynamic and hydrodynamic aspects, sailing performance theory, and dynamic performance validation measurements obtained from a series of experiments. The WASP consists of a 4.2 meter long sailboat hull, a low-Reynolds number composite wing, a 2000 Watt-hour battery reservoir, a system of control actuators, a control system running on an embedded microprocessor, a suite of oceanographic sensors, and power regeneration from solar energy. The vehicle has a maximum speed of five knots and weighs approximately 350 kilograms. Results from four oceanographic missions that were conducted in the Port Everglades Intracoastal Waterway in Dania Beach [sic] Florida are presented. Water temperature, salinity and oxidation-reduction measurements recorded during these missions are also discussed. The combination of a mono-hull and solid wing in an autonomous system is a viable design for a long-range ocean observation platform. The results of four near-shore ocean observation missions illustrate the initial capabilities of the design. Future work aimed to further reduce both the mass of the wing design and the power requirements of the system will increase performance in all operating conditions and should be considered. Furthermore, the progression of the legal framework related to ocean vehicles must be pursued with respect to unmanned autonomous systems.

Particularly, people who are deaf or Hard of Hearing (HOH) experience inaccessible Web sites due to a lack of Closed Captioning (CC) for multimedia content on the Web, no sign language equivalents for the content on the Web, and an insufficient evaluation framework for determining if a Web page is accessible to the Hearing Impaired community. Several opportunities for accessing content needed to be rectified in order for the Hearing Impaired community to access the full benefits of the information repository on the Internet. The research contributions of this thesis are to resolve some of the Web accessibility problems being faced by the Hearing Impaired community. These objectives are to create an automated CC for the Web for multimedia content, to embed sign language equivalent for content available on the Web, to create a framework to evaluate Web accessibility for the Hearing Impaired community, and to create a social network for the Deaf community. To demonstrate the feasibility of fulfilling the above listed objectives several prototypes were implemented. These prototypes have been used in real life scenarios in order to have an objective evaluation of the proposed framework. Further, the implemented prototypes have had an impact to both the academic community and to the industry.

Utilizing six infrared sensors, the handheld device is modeled after current technologies which use IR and sonar sensors which are reviewed in this project. By using behavioral modeling, an algorithm for obstacle avoidance and the generation of the obstacle free path is reduced using a K-map and implemented using a multiplexer.

Principles of instruction remain true regardless of program or context when implemented by appropriate instructional systems design procedures. These theoretical elements however, require deeper empirical investigation in authentic classroom settings. This study posits that foundational principles are observable in non lSD systematized settings. Further it suggests that they are represented differently in classroom video recordings across countries, based on their performance level on a standardized assessment. The study shows inter alia that, (1) Instructional principles as conceptualized by lSD theorists are observable from non-ISD systematized settings. (2) The language and knowledge of ISD can be fused with curriculum studies to create sharper lens for investigating classroom phenomena. Foundational principles provide an important point of departure for this shared language. (3) Iterative video analysis is effectively combined with video observation protocols to study instructional contexts. (4) The occurrence of demonstration and real world integration stand out as more significant in higher performing countries than in lower performing countries. (5) This study adds support to earlier investigations which suggest that there are global patterns of teaching. (6) TIMSS performance tier does not correlate with a greater occurrence of foundational principles of instruction.

The computer analyses are based on the proposed stress-strain relationship considering the effects of tensile stress on both elastic modulus and maximum compressive stress of concrete. Several assumptions are made in predicting the loss of tensile strength due to crack, confinement due to the laminate bonding, tensile strength due to the prestress force, failure pattern due to the concentrated stress adjacent to the loading point and concrete crushing due to large compressive strain. A subroutine is developed using macro commands of ANSYS. In this research, Branson's equation or Ie procedure is assumed in the prediction of deflection of retrofitted concrete members. The modifications needed due to laminate bonding are the cracking moments of inertia (Icr) of the beams or slabs bonded with CFRP laminates, which are included in the analysis.
