The author conducted content analyses of the titles and terms both papers used to describe the candidates, the total column inches devoted to each candidate, and the number of times the candidate's name appeared in headlines. The results of the analyses were inconclusive for both elections, but in the Republican primary The Miami Herald appeared to show slight favoritism for Jeb Bush, a Miamian. The Sun-Sentinel provided relatively equal coverage for all four major candidates. In the general election both papers mentioned Lawton Chiles more frequently with more attention directed to his stand on issues possibly because of his incumbency.

Show moreThis is a study of the impact of constituency pressures on the United States House of Representatives in the Eighty-seventh Congress. It is an attempt to measure by quantitative methods the relative effectiveness of pressures on congress from the various types of constituencies normaily associated with one party or another. Political pressure is defined here as a force which brings about distinctive patterns of voting behavior on the part of the representatives. whether the force is applied through conventional forms of coercion or through the appeal of loyalties and ideologies. The two sources of pressure which are the major concern of this research are the representative's party affiliation and his constituency. The former is held constant while the latter is permitted to vary in order to observe more closely the differing impact of certain constituency pressures on members of the Democratic and Republican parties. The dependent variable in this study is party loyalty which is the per cent of the times a congressman voted with his party on a set of one hundred and fifteen party unity roll-calls. These roll-calls are those on which a majority of one party opposes a majority of the other party. The independent variables are gross measures of broad demographic, socio-economic, and political characteristics of congressional districts. The theory is that these factors reflect significant differences between the Democrats and Republicans with regard to electoral centers of support. Consequently, it is hypothesized that variations in a congressman's constituency would be related to variations in legislative voting behavior as measured by party unity roll-calls . The step-wise multiple regression technique is the means of testing the major proposal. It indicates that a proportion of the variance in party loyalty can be explained by variation in constituency. But the proportion explained for the Democrats (34.7%) is much greater than that for the Republicans (11. 8%). The threshold concept is proposed as an explanation for this. It is also suggested that new research is needed to clarify the types of constituencies most likely to associate with the two major parties. Thus, the theory that constituency pressures can explain, to some extent, legislative voting behavior has been tentatively validated. However, the findings indicate that a more complex, multi-variate, theory of legislative behavior is needed before accurate predictions can be made. Therefore, the constituency model must be expanded to include other factors such as psychological and institutional ones.

Their web site includes a Northern Ireland news page, which provides daily coverage of the province including extensive information on the ongoing peace process. This study examines the online coverage of the Northern Ireland conflict in the year 2000. Through a textual analysis of 21 articles, an ideological critique of the BBC's rhetoric is provided. To reveal the ideological perspective of the BBC Online, the verbal text used in each article is carefully analyzed, the sources consulted are examined in terms of representation, and the images that accompany the article are studied to determine if the images match the stories or simply cater to browsers. The findings show that despite their promise of impartiality, the BBC presents a view of the Northern Ireland conflict that leans toward a unionist perspective.

A representative sampling of these cartoons demonstrates that the pictorial and symbolic language in their visual dialogue was extrapolated from the heroic, mythic character types Reagan portrayed during his film career and with which he sought to be identified. This thesis argues that because cartoons depicted and caricaturized Reagan as an archetypal hero, they touched a responsive chord in the electorate and persuaded them to regard Reagan favorably.

The major purpose was to investigate the effects of two different ratios of shock on escalation-de-escalation ancl other aspects of aggressive-cooperative behavior. In one condition (inequality) one player began game play with 6 shocks, the other player began with 18 shocks. In the other condition (equality) both players began game play with 13 shocks apiece. Players were allowed to purchase additional shocks or surrender any number of shocks. Forty-nine game play variables were generated, representing indices of aggressive or cooperative behavior. The relationships of these variables to additional independent variables such as game plan, grade point average, and attitudinal scores were also examined. The findings of this experiment indicate that the balanced (equality) conditions tend to generate more purchasing behavior and a higher overall level of aggression. The unbalanced (inequality) condition however, generated more extreme forms of behavior. Those with 18 shocks were generally more aggressive than all other players, and those with 6 shocks (inequality) were generally more cooperative than all other players. These findings conflicted with the results of the previous Tindell-Vincent game, but it seems that the addition of the purchasing option radically altered the effects of treatment condition. Sex was found to be a good predictor of game behavior. females were generally more cooperative and less active than males. Game plan and, to a lesser extent, attitude scores had predictive value for several responses, but grade point average, as expected, was a poor predictor of game behavior.

Show moreThe sovereignty of the Spratly Islands has been disputed since the early 1900's. Since the 1970's, the dispute has taken on greater significance in world politics due to the possibility of oil reserves. The fact that China has become the regional hegemon in Southeast Asia has made the dispute more important. If China takes over the archipelago, world politics would be altered as China would in effect turn the South China Sea into a Chinese Lake. There have been many resolutions proposed in order to eliminate the conflict. However, most authors have focused on peaceful resolutions such as joint development or arbitration. The problem is that the relations between the claimants is not conducive to these resolutions. The establishment of a security community known as military prevention is one solution that has not been explored. It is a resolution to the conflict that would include demilitarization. It is this option that appears to be likely in lieu of the tensions in the region.

Merging with environmental discourses like deep ecology and the struggle for indigenous rights, Anarcho-Primitivism models its utopian discourse on ethnographic descriptions of hunter gatherer societies and mythologized notions of the "Noble Savage." Furthermore, its adherents retain high rates of visibility in the burgeoning antiglobalization movement, notorious for their black uniform and tactics of property destruction. My paper critically and pragmatically engages their attempts to invoke "the Primitive" as a metaphor for resisting the ascendance of global capitalism in the twenty-first century.

It was feared that domination of television by wealthy candidates would further weaken the democratic process. Although such wholesale capture of the electorate was not evident in the Sixties, it was regarded as a future danger. Television news was remarkable for its saturation in the public, its power to calm the people in time of crisis, its conciseness, and the ambivalence with which people reacted to it.

Aspects of Soledad's life history illustrate her understanding of the economy, politics, and history of Mexico. This research fills gaps in previous analyses that have focused on women as victims of oppression and exploitation.

Show moreThis research attempts to delineate the communications patterns within the Florida House of Representatives of 1967 in its deliberations concerning the issue of education. To accomplish this goal, a questionnaire was personally administered or mailed to all 119 members of the House. A return rate of 51.3% (61) was attained. The bulk of the questionnaire items were of a sociometric nature. To map the communications of the House, ten specific hypotheses were tested. These hypotheses concerned the relative importance of particular types of legislative actors and groups in the communications patterns of both parties. Administrative officials were also included in the analysis. The rationale for these hypotheses concerned the variables of age and/or size of the respective parties and were based upon the history of Florida politics. All ten hypotheses were based upon the contention that, as in other organizations and decision-making groups, in a legislative body there would exist a "practiced" communications pattern distinctly different from the "formal" organizational pattern. The pattern which emerged from the analysis revealed that members of both parties relied upon a small number of education experts or specialists for information, regardless of the experts' formal positions. The Democrats did not consider their party leadership to be an important information source while the Republican caucus --and through the caucus, the leadership--was a strong source of voting cues. With the exceptions of Dade and Pinellas counties, intra-delegation communications did not appear important in either party. While Democrats did not rely upon any Republicans for information, the Republicans did rely upon some Democrats (the experts}. No geographical splits were apparent in Democratic communications. The Pinellas Republicans were somewhat isolated from east coast Republicans in the information flow. The communications pattern between House members and administrative officials focused upon cabinet members. Republican Governor Kirk was most generally listed as an information source by Republicans while the Democrats relied for information upon Superintendent of Public Instruction Christian. Legislative staffs were identified as information sources by members of both parties.

Show moreGubernatorial mansions are historically home to white men. Candidates with contrary identities, such as women and racial minorities have met limited success in their quest for office. Yet the number of women seeking executive level office has increased and these women represent a broader intersectional identity. The low percentage of women governors has been examined in detail, but that analysis largely holds gender as an isolated variable and does not consider the candidates' broader identity. This project posits gender is only one factor of candidate identity called into question when it is nonnormative and varies from historical office holders. I argue candidate identity interacts with the identity expressed by voters and the collective identity found in social movements. The ability of the candidate to navigate this interaction and use it to their advantage is paramount to their success. I find that structural differences in the Democratic and Republican parties provide opportunities and constraints for women candidates. Further, gender, race, and previous political experience are intersectional and create different responses by candidates. Ultimately, successful candidates align their political identity with the collective identity found in contemporary social movements as a mitigation mechanism for voters uncomfortable with who the candidate appears to be.

In this dissertation, I do an in-depth comparative case study analysis to assess the prospects of moderation of two Islamists political entities, the Muslim Brotherhood as a transnational social movement and the Morocco Party of Justice and Development (JDP), which has no transnational ties. Both the Muslim Brotherhood and PJD came to power after the Arab uprising in 2011 and were key players in the democratic transitions in both countries; however, the entities are not related. Further, the dissertation will explore the moderation level of the Muslim Brotherhood and PJD. Current literature on Islamists and moderation theory focuses on political inclusion, political learning and repression as factors that would affect the moderation of an Islamist group. Looking at Islamists as a transnational social movement is a new aspect in the study of Islamism.

Show moreThis study examines the shift of Turkish foreign policy from an alliance with the West to a close relationship with Muslim leaders in the 21st century. It attempts to understand the reasons why Turkish foreign policy has shifted from Atatèurk's principles of noninterference and neutrality to the ambition of making Turkey a global actor. In this respect it probes and assesses the determinants of Turkish foreign policy in the last decade under the rule of Prime Minister Erdogan, Foreign Minister Davutoglu and the governing political party, the Justice and Development Party. In arguing that Turkish foreign policy has in the last decade been primarily shaped by the shift in the religious political ideology of the governing elites as well as the rise of Kurdish nationalism, the study seeks to determine the direction of Turkish foreign policy in the near term.
