Show moreVery small states have appeared in relatively large numbers in the past two decades. Many of these are either wholly or partly insular and consist of discrete areal segments. Microstates are defined as those states with less than one million population. Multipartite states are defined as those in which at least 5 percent of the territory is physically separated from the main body. There are nineteen multipartite microstates at present, which are subject states for the study: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Bahrain, Cape Verde, Comoros, Equatorial Guinea, Fiji, Grenada, Kiribati, Maldives, Malta, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Western Samoa. Two thrusts are developed: (1) the description of first order administrative subdivisions of the subject states; (2) the testings of hypotheses concerned with area, population, fragmentation, and dispersion, relating to the existence and number of subdivisions. Much literature is available on subdivisions, microstates, area, population, and physical characteristics of states, which treats these topics systematically. However, little analytic work is available which applies these systematic topics to actual data manifested by states. In order to test the posited hypotheses, two measures are derived: a fragmentation index and a dispersion ratio. Criteria for the application of these measures are established. Testing of the hypotheses yields the following results. Among the subject states: (1) no areal threshold exists for the formation of administrative subdivisions; however, a high correlation exists when area of states is considered ordinally; (2) no population threshold exists for the formation of administrative subdivisions; however, a moderate correlation exists when population of states is considered ordinally; (3) there is no significant relationship between area and number of subdivisions; (4) there is a significant relationship between area and number of subdivisions; (5) there is no significant relationship between degree of dispersion and number of subdivisions. Measures of fragmentation, dispersion, and other physical characteristics may be applied to variously defined groups of microstates, or indeed to any territorial entities.

Abstract/Description

The study begins with the hypothesis that economic and political variables are the salient determinants of ethnic conflicts in developing societies. The purposes of the thesis are threefold: (1) to explore the influence of inequitable revenue allocations and unequal distribution of political power among ethnic groups of Pakistan; (2) to assess the influence of elites on the political development of that polyethnic society; and (3) to identify the alternatives open to elites in dealing with...
Show moreThe study begins with the hypothesis that economic and political variables are the salient determinants of ethnic conflicts in developing societies. The purposes of the thesis are threefold: (1) to explore the influence of inequitable revenue allocations and unequal distribution of political power among ethnic groups of Pakistan; (2) to assess the influence of elites on the political development of that polyethnic society; and (3) to identify the alternatives open to elites in dealing with the problem of political integration raised by Pathan regionalism in Pakistan. Literature dealing with the elite approach to such problems and the outcomes of such approaches are examined. Elite attitudes and structures of their approaches to similar conflicts in other developing societies were related to problems of political integration in Pakistan. Drawing on this discussion the conclusion outlines certain alternative options and their probable outcome for the task of national integration in Pakistan.

Show moreMemes have become a staple in political communication. However, the relationship between individuals’ political orientation, their level of affective polarization, the moral content of memes, and meme effectiveness is underexplored. I expected that polarized partisans would rate ingroup memes as more effective than outgroup memes. In line with moral foundations theory, I expected that polarized liberals would rate individualizing foundation memes as more effective than less polarized memes and that polarized conservatives would rate binding foundation memes as more effective than less polarized conservatives. Participants (N = 467) rated moral political memes for meme effectiveness. Results indicated that more polarized conservatives, but not liberals, rated ingroup memes as more effective than outgroup memes. Polarized liberals rated purity/sanctity as more effective than less polarized liberals. Polarized conservatives rated fairness/reciprocity plus the binding foundations memes as more effective than less polarized conservatives. These results indicate that polarized partisans react to memes differently.

Abstract/Description

For over four decades the Apartheid system in South Africa deprived many black South Africans their right to democracy. However, Nelson Mandela's leadership strategies would prove effective in helping the Anti-Apartheid movement achieve its common goal of universal suffrage for all South Africans. This thesis explores what made Mandela's rhetoric as a leader so effective during his courtroom testimonies from the Treason Trial in 1956 and the Rivonia Trial in 1964. A new model is developed to analyze leadership characteristics: charisma, prophecy, creativity, pragmatism and prophecy proved to be significant strategies in making his leadership rhetoric so effective. The purpose of the model is to demonstrate how leadership is fulfilled.

Show moreThe history of the development of the party newspapers is reviewed in the first chapter. The goal of the research was to attempt to discover the uses and goals of state political party newspapers. Five propositions were proposed which would accomplish this aim. The first proposition was to discover the extent to which the state party paper is used to extend the publicity of the state chairman. The second proposition was to discover to what extent the party newspaper is used as a tool in finance and fund-raising appeals. The third proposition attempted to reveal to what extent the state paper is used to extend the publicity of the incumbent governor. Proposition IV sought to ascertain whether or not a party not holding the governor's office openly criticized the state opposition party, while the incumbent party merely spoke of its own accomplishments while neglecting the opposition. The fifth, and final, proposition attempted to ascertain whether less populous state Republican party papers were more apt to relate themselves to the national Republican party and administration. The research method of content analysis was discussed and the methodology used in this study was explained. The scores for nine content categories were compiled and the findings from a one-issue analysis of sixty-two papers confirmed Propositions I-IV. The fifth proposition was disproven. A time analysis of six selected papers was performed and these findings confirmed the findings of the one-issue analysis. Furthermore, this analysis proved the existence of patterns of column-inch space allocations in a state party newspaper.
