Analyzing changes in the political party system has been approached in numerous forms. This paper examines change in state level party strength and political behavior at the individual level. By analyzing state level partisan balance shifts between 1952-1988, states cluster into groups based on their aggregate electoral partisan strength. Utilizing the methodology of Earl and Merle Black (1987) and by compiling data from the University of Michigan's Survey Research Center-Center for Political...

This paper examines change in state level party strength and political behavior at the individual level. By analyzing state level partisan balance shifts between 1952-1988, states cluster into groups based on their aggregate electoral partisan strength. Utilizing the methodology of Earl and Merle Black (1987) and by compiling data from the University of Michigan's Survey Research Center-Center for Political Studies (SRC-CPS), political attitudes of socio-economic groups are compared between states which show trends of Republicanism versus those favoring a Democratic party trend. These comparisons shed light on current realignment theory, the dismantling of the New Deal coalition, and the forming of new coalitions.

Abstract/Description
This thesis examines one aspect of the decline in partisanship--split-ticket voting. Vote choices in three presidential elections--1980, 1984, and 1988--were analyzed. Split-ticket voting was examined among four groups in the voting population: race, region, age, and social class. There were only limited differences in the inclination to vote split-tickets among the groups analyzed. Incumbency at the House and Senate level was considered to be a viable factor which increased split-ticket...

Incumbency at the House and Senate level was considered to be a viable factor which increased split-ticket voting. The factor of incumbency did encourage split-ticket voting in House races. However, it was not as significant a factor in Senate races.

Show moreThis thesis analyzes how the American political system presents specific rhetorical constraints for independent and third party candidates who are "othered" by the system. To better understand how independent candidates overcome these constraints, the rhetoric of two such recent candidates, Charlie Crist and Joe Lieberman, is analyzed using ideographic criticism. These two candidates were originally affiliated with one of the two major political parties, but changed their party affiliation to run as Independent candidates. To facilitate their transition to independent candidates, both politicians used popular American political ideographs such as "the people," "freedom," and "unity" to maintain their allegiance to America and their constituencies, while separating their political ideology from their prior party affiliation. The ideographic analysis reveals that independent candidates can create nuanced changes in the meanings of popular ideographs to transcend partisan interpretations and create a positive perception of political "otherness."

Unitarian preacher and Union Army officer Liberty Billings arrived in Florida in 1863 with the First South Carolina Volunteer Infantry. Billings settled in Fernandina and became active in Florida Reconstruction politics as a Radical Republican. This thesis examines the life of Liberty Billings focusing on events preceding and following the Convention. In doing so, it argues that Billings' participation in Reconstruction politics derived from his experiences prior to the Civil War as did his transition from emancipationist to reconciliationist. By examining the earlier years of Billings' life as well as the evidence of his campaigns during 1867, his term as State Senator and Supreme Court cases, it will be demonstrated that Billings abandoned racial equality for class supremacy.
