Trends in streamflow extremes at a regional scale linked to the possible influences of four major oceanic-atmospheric oscillations are analyzed in this study. Show moreTrends in streamflow extremes at a regional scale linked to the possible influences of four major oceanic-atmospheric oscillations are analyzed in this study. Oscillations considered include: El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The main emphasis is low flows in the South-Atlantic Gulf region of the United States. Several standard drought indices of low flow extremes during two different phases (warm/positive and cool/negative) of these oscillations are evaluated. Long-term streamflow data at 43 USGS sites in the region from the Hydro-Climatic Data Network that are least affected by anthropogenic influences are used for analysis. Results show that for ENSO, low flow indices were more likely to occur during La Niña phase; however, longer deficits were more likely during El Niño phase. Results also show that for PDO (AMO), all (most) low flow indices occur during the cool (warm) phase.

This research is focused on the electromagnetic noise issues related to using an AUV to tow the magnetic sensor package. There are active sources of electromagnetic noise caused by an AUV that are present in addition to those induced by the Earth's magnetic field and permanent magnets. To characterize the magnetic noise associated with the AUV magnetometer tow system, the various active source elements were identified, the orientation sensitivity of the sensors being used was determined, and the magnetic anomaly of a similar AUV which may be eventually be used in a magnetic sensing arrangement was measured. The results are used to show the proposed sensing arrangement will likely not achieve the necessary sensitivity to measure subtle internal wave signals.

To understand climate variability influences, streamflow data is partitioned in to cool and warm phases of four oceanic and atmospheric oscillations known to have an effect on hydroloclimatology of the region: El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO); Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO); and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Generally, results showed decreasing trends in overall streamflow extremes, as well as spatially varying, temporally non-uniform influences of climate variability on streamflow extremes and characteristics.

Show moreThe purpose of this study is to investigate the changes of the pericardial dose at different respiratory phases and statuses in accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) using Cyberknife M6™ multileaf collimators (CK-MLC). Anonymous 6 female patient files with respiration gated four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) sets, and 6 left breast cancer cases with CT images in free-breathing (FB) and deep inhalation breath-hold (BH) were selected. One CT image set from each patient was planned for APBI in Accuray Multiplan™ 5.2, and respectively compared its pericardial dose with those from CT sets of other respiratory phases. All the comparable CT images were fused in the planning system according to the left chest wall, among which the lung gap anterior to the pericardium varies by the lung expansion. For the purpose of this study, the tumor volume was outlined in the media-lower quadrant of the left breast where this lung gap is relatively small. All the plans in this study met the requirements set by the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project/Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (NSABP/RTOG), specifically protocol B-39/RTOG 0413. From the comparisons in this investigation, the mean relative pericardial dose of the BH CT group showed significant or 45% (p < 0.01) lower value than that of FB CT group. However, in FB 4DCT group, 3 of 6 cases indicated a meaningful reduction (p < 0.05) in 100% inhalation phase when compared with the mean dose over other phases. The inconsistent pericardial doses were displayed in FB 4DCT group due to minimal changes in the anterior lung gap of the pericardium, when the diaphragmatic breathing was dominant in those patients.

Simulations of the AUV, tow cable, and towfish are performed to provide an understanding of the effects of changing different input parameters, such as towing speed (0.5-2m/s), cable length (5-15m), vehicle trajectory (circle and vertical zig zag maneuvers), and current (0.25-1.25m/s). The AUV-cabletowfish system and equations of motion needed for the simulations are described herein. Results show that a 5m tow cable provides better towfish maneuvering than the longer cable lengths. High towfish pitch angle is decreased by decreasing the distance between CG and CB. Surface currents speed of 0.25m/s change the AUV and towfish circle maneuver to a spiral trajectory, while 1.25m/s current speed cause a zig zag trajectory.

At PKC 2003, Choon and Cheon proposed an identity-based signature scheme along with a provable security reduction. We propose a modification of their scheme with several performance benefits. In addition to faster signing, for batch signing the signature size can be reduced, and if multiple signatures for the same identity need to be verified, the verification can be accelerated. Neither the signing nor the verification algorithm rely on the availability of a (pseudo)random generator, and we give a provable security reduction in the random oracle model to the (`-)Strong Diffie-Hellman problem. Implementing the group arithmetic is a cost-critical task when designing quantum circuits for Shor’s algorithm to solve the discrete logarithm problem. We introduce a tool for the automatic generation of addition circuits for ordinary binary elliptic curves, a prominent platform group for digital signatures. Our Python software generates circuit descriptions that, without increasing the number of qubits or T-depth, involve less than 39% of the number of T-gates in the best previous construction. The software also optimizes the (CNOT) depth for F2-linear operations by means of suitable graph colorings.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to (1) derive gender-specific allometric scaling models using pre-training muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and body mass (BM) as scaling variables, (2) test model appropriateness using regression diagnostics, and (3) cross-validate the models before and after training. A subset of FAMuSS study data (n = 319, females = 183, males = 136) was randomly split into two groups (A & B). Group A pre-training data for female BM, female CSA, male BM, and male CSA models produced scaling exponents of 1.08, 0.44, 0.63, and 0.68, respectively. The female BM model was deemed inappropriate due to non-normal distribution of residuals. All other models met statistical criteria including normal distribution of residuals. Cross-validation to Group B pre-training data revealed that the models were appropriate, with the possible exception of male CSA model. Twelve weeks of resistance training did not alter the relation between BM, CSA, and muscular strength assessed by allometric scaling.
