Tom later joined the Navy during the Vietnam War, and was able to see the world. Following his return to Davie, Tom worked in the real estate business and served on the Town Council. Stories range from life in old Davie, to his R&R on the Spanish Riviera, to the intricacies of modern developtnent in Davie.

Edna Pearce Lockett served in the Florida Legislature from 1949 until 1953. She was the third woman to serve. Lockett operated one of the largest cattle ranches in Florida and served her community until her death. Junior Miller has been the caretaker at the Pearce Estate since 1975 when Edna Pearce Lockett was in her sixties. Audrey Vickers knew Edna Pearce Lockett through her involvement with local politics and her journalistic endeavors.

B.D. Thomas was born in 1919 at Prayer Ridge in the Basinger, Florida area to a cattle family. She became an orphan at the age of thirteen and was married at the age of sixteen. After she married, she used inherited cattle to buy eighty acres at a tax sale in order to begin ranching with her husband. The interviews were conducted on that same ranch where her son, R.E. Thomas, herds approximately two hundred head of cattle today.

John Benjamin Moody was born in 1918 in Tampa, Florida. He worked for over fifty years for airlines in Miami in the maintenance and mechanical division. He moved back to homestead area to Lake Placid in 1993. Moody is related to Edna Pearce through Rev. Levi Pearce's marriage to his great great-grandmother's sister. He attended Pearce reunions at the Pearce Homestead as a child and much later as a retiree. Moody was instrumental in the restoration and upkeep of the on-site Pearce cemetery.

Show moreA well known public servant, businessman, and political leader, Philip D. Lewis has lived in Palm Beach County since the early 1930s, when his family moved to Palm Beach from Chicago. After attending Georgetown University, he married Maryellen Howley of Lake Worth and joined his father’s real estate development firm. In 1958 he established Philip D. Lewis Real Estate, a commercial and industrial real estate company based in Riviera Beach. He and his wife became the parents of nine children, all educated, as were their parents, in local parochial schools. He was elected to the Florida Senate in 1970 and served as that body’s president 1979-1980. Since leaving elected office he has served the county and the state in a myriad of ways, often drafted for service by Florida governors for posts ranging from chairmanship of aging and water management studies to post-hurricane reviews and service on blue ribbon education panels. Throughout his adult life Lewis has been involved in civic and charitable activities, and he remains an active Catholic layman and advisor to leaders of The Diocese of Palm Beach and The Archdiocese of Miami.

Afterward, he enrolled in the University of Ohio and was still a freshman when Japan launched its raid on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Consequently, Mr. Northcutt enlisted in the B5 flying program of the U.S. Navy the following year. He served as a Naval fighter pilot during the last two years of World War II and during his service earned four Gold Stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and a Citation for Meritous Achievement. Following the war, Mr. Northcutt joined his mother, who had moved to Atlanta, and finished his AA degree. Afterwards, he went to law school at the University of Georgia with the aid of the GI Bill. Although he graduated from law school, Mr. Northcutt has never practiced law. He instead became a real estate developer, and in the early 1970s came to Florida for a real estate deal in Bal Harbour. He has lived here ever since. Although now 82 years old, Mr. Northcutt is still an active developer, and along with his wife of twenty years, Kaye Lynne, a sponsor of the arts in Florida.
