Show moreThe army of interbellum Poland has often been described as antiquated; its leadership as incompetent. Despite Germany's 1939 "Blitzkrieg" victory, such conclusions are unsound. Indeed careful analysis will show that they are based more on popular misconceptions, than on hard facts. While Poland's military establishment had many faults, the 1939 catastrophe was caused, not be overconfident generals, or cavalry charges against tanks, but rather by the failure of Poland's western allies to fulfill their treaty obligations. To support such an assertion, this thesis will investigate military, political, economic and diplomatic influences on "Plan West" (Plan Zachod) --the Polish strategy for a war with Germany. The combination of these elements will show that Poland's military forces were prepared for war, and even had a chance for victory in 1939.

- The Key West Agreement of 1948: A milestone for naval aviation.
- Creator

- Abstract/Description

The Key West Agreement of 1948 (KWA) was crucial in the Navy's fight to save naval aviation from Air Force encroachment. Prior to the KWA, the Air Force attempted to control the roles and missions surrounding naval aviation. The Air Force in fact, wished to emasculate naval aviation, which in turn would have made it downplayed its importance during the early Cold War years. But the KWA assigned all roles and missions surrounding naval aviation to the Navy and not to the Air Force. In so doing...
Show moreThe Key West Agreement of 1948 (KWA) was crucial in the Navy's fight to save naval aviation from Air Force encroachment. In so doing, the KWA gave the Navy the right to control all land- and carrier-based aviation as well as develop new technology and weapon systems such as the supercarrier. Without the KWA, the Navy could have lost control of naval aviation. The thesis highlights the importance of the KWA, and explains reasons why historians have failed to focus adequate attention to the subject.

Show moreInternal strife has plagued the South American country of Colombia for well over forty years. In an effort to combat the different subversive elements within its borders, the Government of Colombia developed an interagency counterinsurgency strategy that takes a whole-of-government approach. This approach takes many governmental functions and institutions and places them under one counterinsurgency "umbrella". The cornerstone of this interagency model is strong civil-military cooperation. What this research project seeks to accomplish is to first apply the Concordance Theory of Civil-Military Relations to Colombia's unique civil-military relationship. Secondly, this research project seeks to understand how the Colombian interagency counterinsurgency model has balanced the country's security and socio-political development and sustainability. Specifically, this research project attempts to answer the question of how this interagency model of counterinsurgency influences socio-political and security sustainability since the implementation of Plan Colombia. The methodology for this research project will include a combination of primary source reviews, comparative case study examination and simple trend analysis of significant security and socio-political variables. This methodological approach will best describe the unique political, military and social dynamics taking place within Colombia. This analysis of Colombia's interagency counterinsurgency strategy is relevant not only to Colombia but to many other countries facing similar challenges in Latin America and around the world. The applicability of this model to other insurgency scenarios will also be briefly examined.

What has been largely ignored is the plight of those who did the fighting--especially German volunteer soldiers. These young men enlisted in the war effort because of a concrete set of assumptions that were later radicalized during the war experience, which was characterized by seemingly endless labor and episodic periods of extreme violence. This transformation of beliefs had a profound impact upon the shaping of the modern world.

Show moreAfter the firing on Fort Sumter and Abraham Lincoln's subsequent call for volunteer troops, the nation began to mobilize for war in earnest. Many volunteers believed the war would be short in duration, thus they eagerly anticipated the arrival to the seat of war. The Battle of Shiloh, in April of 1862, forced both sides to realize that the war would be a prolonged affair. American soldiers had never witnessed such carnage and savagery on the battlefield. Both Northern and Southern volunteers brought with them a unique understanding of the world, shaped by the common heritage all Americans shared. "Yanks" and "Rebs" believed in many of the same principals, ideals and morals. Their similarities extended to their war experience as well. Both sides experienced the same psychological stresses induced by combat, exposure, hardship and extended absence form home. By the war's end, soldiers came to understand that war had changed them, which in turn affected how they regarded those at home.
