Our results showed that frontal lobe functioning is not affected with age. However, there is a slight decrease in medial temporal functioning that continues on throughout life. There was a main effect of Question, Item Type, and Age Group explained through a three-way ANOVA. Binding errors increase with age because specific areas of the brain, such as the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, deteriorate with age.

Show moreWith the issuance of the Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) for Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communications by the United States National Highway Tra c Safety Administration (NHTSA), the goal of the widespread deployment of vehicular networking has taken a signi cant step towards becoming a reality. In order for consumers to accept the technology, it is expected that reasonable mechanisms will be in place to protect their privacy. Cooperative Caching has been proposed as an approach that can be used to improve privacy by distributing data items throughout the mobile network as they are requested. With this approach, vehicles rst attempt to retrieve data items from the mobile network, alleviating the need to send all requests to a centralized location that may be vulnerable to an attack. However, with this approach, a requesting vehicle may expose itself to many unknown vehicles as part of the cache discovery process. In this work we present a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) based Cooperative Caching system that utilizes a genetic algorithm to selectively choose members of the mobile network to query for data items with a focus on improving overall privacy. The privacy improvement is achieved by avoiding those members that present a greater risk of exposing information related to the request and choosing members that have a greater potential of having the needed data item. An Agent Based Model is utilized to baseline the privacy concerns when using a broadcast based approach to cache discovery. In addition, an epidemiology inspired mathematical model is presented to illustrate the impact of reducing the number of vehicles queried during cache discovery. Periodic reports from neighboring vehicles are used by the genetic algorithm to identify which neighbors should be queried during cache discovery. In order for the system to be realistic, vehicles must trust the information in these reports. A PKI based approach used to evaluate the trustworthiness of each vehicle in the system is also detailed. We have conducted an in-depth performance study of our system that demonstrates a signi cant reduction in the overall risk of exposure when compared to broadcasting the request to all neighbors.

Show moreThe graying of America as a sociological and health care phenomenon continues to dictate the demand for creative and innovative interventions that can directly influence the quality of life of nursing home residents. Creative Reminiscence is a program that fosters the active reliving of the past through narration, such as in story-telling, and the use of creative art expression to uncover meaningful life events or valuable life experiences. The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the meaningful life events elicited by the experience of Creative Reminiscence using a phenomenographic approach. Existing (archived) data-transcribed interviews, poetry and painting on planters that were obtained from 20 participants of the Creative Reminiscence program entitled Le Jardin de Sante were analyzed. Five variations of meaningful memories evoked by Creative Reminiscence were identified. These are described as follows: (a) memories that rejuvenate the elder's sense of connectio n; (b) memories that revive the elder's sense of love and intimacy; (c) memories that restore the elder's sense of being; (d) memories that reassert the elder's sense of control; and (e) memories that reinstitute the elder's sense of purpose. In a caring interaction with Creative Reminiscence, the nursed are able to transcend, moving back in time (past) to appreciate segment(s) of their lives, with triumphs and disappointments that give meaning to their inner conflict/human struggle (present), and integrate a sense of confidence and acceptance of their lives to sustain well-being and a sense of wholeness. This research highlights the similarities and differences in the description of memories by the nursing home residents evoked during Creative Reminiscence., The results of the study support Erikson's notion of the circular nature of the life cycle, wherein there is an inherent need at the last stage of life to re-integrate ascendant psychosocial themes.Taking into account the meaning that nursing home residents ascribe to their experiences provided data on strategies nurses and caregivers can use effectively to help these elders transcend despair. Further research is recommended using a more diverse sample and in more diverse geographical locations. Current standardized instruments may be revised to quantify effects on the ascendant psychosocial themes.

Show moreIn this paper, I ask how members of Japanese society are able to remember naming practices in which some of the traditions are no longer in use. Members of Japanese society perpetuate their collective memory through the utilization of Japanese media to include past and present Japanese name alterations. I explain the reasons behind name alterations, and how knowledge and use of the naming rituals continue through the collective agency of contemporary Japanese media such as anime and manga. Each anime and manga example correlates to past and present naming rituals. Social name alterations occur at birth, genpuku, marriage, and changes in levels of skill. Political alterations occur from hostage exchange or adoption, change in ideologies, occupational change, or the assumption of new roles from a higher-ranking member of society. While members of Japanese society learn naming traditions from daily interactions with other people, media such as anime and manga reinforce expected behavior and customs.

Four age groups (20-29 years, 60-69 years, 70-79 years, and 80-89 years) were compared on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), the DKEFS Tower Test, the Conner's Continuous Performance Test, and a Letter comparison test of processing speed. Results suggested that increased age was associated with decreased performance on most of the studied executive measures, but not all EF are equally affected by age. A slowdown in processing speed mediates some, but not all, decrements in executive performance. The results are interpreted in light of recent neuroimaging data on age-related changes in brain functioning.

Although 2 Vietnams serves as a documentary-style account of the many Vietnams that exist and confront our American memory of Vietnam, each chapter contains social narratives that connect to each other forming larger, subtler narratives. "East-West Documentation" follows a fictional writer's experience living in Vietnam, conducting interviews and reading articles. "Vietnam in the Twilight-Hour" strings narrative poetry together with titles ranging from "Neocolonialism," "Love in Notations," to "SocialPolygrams." In addition to these poetic narratives are photographs that tell snapshot stories. "Correspondence" contains fictions such as "Think and It Will Happen," "StoryOptics," and "Flame of Life." Lastly, "Confessional Archives" contains images and non-fictional stories from veterans, both Vietnamese and American.

Show moreAlthough not all persons with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) go on to develop Alzheimer's disease (AD), MCI is recognized as an early stage of AD. The effects of AD are devastating to all concerned. Research has identified that recognition of AD in its earliest stages and institution of known treatment modalities can forestall the ultimate outcome. Identification of the first subtle signs of MCI can assist in the recognition of this prodromal phase, and allow for institution of therapy while still in the initial stages. Unfortunately, the development of MCI is insidious in nature, thus making it difficult to detect. The purpose of this study was to identify areas of functional decline that occur in MCI in an effort to improve its early identification. A mixed-methods design that combined qualitative and quantitative methods was used. Fifty-three participants with memory complaints were interviewed using a semi structured interview technique with open-ended questions, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and a list of eighty-five items previously identified as indicative of functional decline. Twenty-nine persons were divided into two groups: 1) those identified as probable MCI (consensus diagnosis) (n=15) and possible MCI (based on screening examination) (n=14) and 2) those identified as Normal (no cognitive impairment) (n=10), and their subjective functional deficits compared. The findings suggest that there were certain areas of functional decline more commonly experienced by persons in the MCI group than by unimpaired. These include difficulty recalling details of information and forgetting conversations. There were also other changes identified, such as adaptations on the part of persons with MCI (an increased dependence on memory aids, for example, lists and calendars) and a dec rease in social activities leading to an increase in social isolation. Additionally identified were functional activities that appear to remain intact in persons with early MCI. This study highlights the subtlety with which MCI assaults the functional abilities of individuals, thus making its early identification problematic. The results of this study will contribute by providing information that will help professionals who are assessing persons experiencing memory issues for the possible presence of MCI. Additionally, it is hoped that these findings will assist in the development of a measurement tool designed to assess for possible MCI.

I allow the viewer to enter into a private exchange by the use of intimately charged spaces, like the bed, which demonstrates how paint can be a conduit for touch in absentia. By intensely remembering my partner in these works, I reconstitute my knowing him through paint and seek to move beyond mere representation to know and express him better. Therefore, these paintings not only bridge the physical distance between my body and his, but search for meaningful expressions of my internal conversations as I make visual discoveries that expand my understanding of him.

Arc, an effector immediate early gene, has been linked to synaptic plasticity following learning and memory. It is well established that the rodent hippocampus is essential for processing spatial memory, but its role in processing object memory is a point of contention. Using immunohistochemical techniques, hippocampal sections were stained for arc proteins in the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus in mice following two variations of the novel object recognition (NOR) task. Results suggest mice that acquired strong object memory showed significant hippocampal activation. In mice that acquired weak object memory, hippocampal activation was not significantly different from controls. Arc expression was also examined in other hippocampal sub-regions, as well as in the perirhinal cortex. These results suggest that the mice must acquire a threshold amount of object information before the hippocampal CA1 region is engaged.

Show moreIn order for memory questions to accomplish the goals of questions, teachers need to determine specific content and cognitive goals for each question so that questions can direct learners' attention and reinforce an organizational structure for the encoding of information. The purpose of this study was to examine the language used in memory questions for assessment purposes and to examine whether different language options used when formulating memory questions engaged brain areas related to memory and cognition. The language of the questions can affect the cognitive process by which the answer is derived. The two language options that affect cognitive processes are non-specific and specific. This study supplements teachers' working knowledge of the methods and techniques for questioning by providing a basic understanding of cognitive processes that different questions can evoke. This study used techniques from neuroscience to test hypotheses derived directly from education-based theories of cognition in order to validate educational theory. Neuroscience provides knowledge about how the brain senses, processes, stores, and retrieves information. It also provides findings that can be translated into practical applications for the classroom. Therefore, the relationship between education and neuroscience contributes to effective planning, practices, and assessment; it allows a more comprehensive understanding of the difficulties and apprehensions associated with learning. The following study utilized fMRI to answer the general question of the relationship between the memory processes associated with specific and non-specific questions. Seventeen undergraduate and graduate students from a university in South Florida served as subjects. Subjects were presented with a stimulus consisting of specific questions, non-specific questions, and control statements. All questions/statements followed the design of 8 seconds to read the question/statement, 10 seconds to "think" about the answer to the question or the material presented in the statement, 4 seconds for response using a "yes" or "no" button, and a 12 second rest period. Images collected were analyzed using AFNI. Specific cognitive operations improved efficiency for the retrieval of information from memory. Results elucidate differences in neural activity associated with encoding processes and the retrieval of information from memory based on the language used in specific and non-specific questions.

Show moreThis study sought to determine the effects of two types of advance organizers on the learning and retention of an aeronautical concept, and the interaction of both advance organizers across the learner variable of Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). The 126 subjects selected for testing consisted of students enrolled in the Aircraft Turbine Engine Theory course at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, Florida. Students were randomly assigned to one of three experimental groups within four intact class sections. The treatment instrument was two different modes of "The Bernoulli Principle of Energy Conservation in a Moving Fluid." The experimental treatment was administered at the beginning of the sixth week of a 14 week course. The first group read a verbal advance organizer; the second examined a graphic organizer; and the third received a placebo. Following the treatments, the subjects began a six hour block of instruction, Aircraft Turbine Compressor Theory, which extended over two weeks. Following the instruction, a learning test was administered to each intact class section. Seven weeks later, a delayed retention test was administered. A statistical analysis of the results indicated that: (1) the advance organizer in verbal or graphic form was an effective approach to learning and retention of an aeronautical concept; (2) the verbal advance organizer tended to be more effective than the graphic in both learning and retention; and (3) the graphic advance organizer was most effective in the retention of material by those students who had exhibited a lower standand of over-all performance (CGPA) in the past.
